Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets - Dead period begins, but recruiting doesn't stop

Despite entering the first week of the dead period, Ohio State recruiting stays active.
Monday marked the first official day of the dead period in the college football recruiting world. From now until Jan. 14, college football coaches are prohibited from any in-person contact with recruits. This includes any official visits to college campuses a recruit might make and limits coaches from taking any in-home visits. Written and electronic communications are still allowed.
With just a little over two months until National Signing Day on Feb. 3, this dead period limits a coach's ability to sway any undecided recruits. Despite this, many highly-touted recruits still will commit to schools in this time period. One recruit who has decided to announce during the dead period is 2016 four-star DT Antwuan Jackson, who will be announcing his commitment this week.
After traveling to Auburn this past weekend for his final official visit, Jackson will make a decision between Florida, Auburn and Ohio State on Thursday. With the Buckeyes unable to say anything to sway Jackson into choosing the Buckeyes, Urban Meyer was still able to do something that couldn't have gone unnoticed by the 6'3, 285-pounder, adding Greg Schiano to the coaching staff. With the recent departure of former Auburn defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, Ohio State can now offer Jackson a coaching stability not quite available at arguably their biggest competitor for his services.
Buckeye recruits receive 5th stars
Rivals unveiled their new Top 100 recruits for the class of 2017, and there were plenty of Buckeye commits and targets who received a bump in their ratings.
2016 5-star DE and Buckeye commit Jonathon Cooper posted a picture of himself on Twitter sporting an Ohio State jersey. Cooper signed his financial aid agreement with the Buckeyes Aug. 11 and will join fellow five-star DE Nick Bosa on Ohio State's defensive line next year. He looks to be rather excited about being a Buckeye.

- Josh Myers, who Rivals has rated as their No. 2 OT for the class, received his 5th star on Monday. Myers committed early to the Buckeyes, announcing his commitment back in January of this year, and there has been no speculation as of yet into him changing his mind. The 6'6, 290-pound tackle has tremendous strength to go along with quick hands, two traits necessary to become a top OT in college.
- Shaun Wade was another Buckeye commit who received his 5th star yesterday. Wade, a 6'2, 185-pound DB out of Jacksonville, Florida announced his commitment to Ohio State two weeks prior to Myers. Despite his decision early in the year, Wade has still been active in his recruitment. He hasn't been afraid to take unofficial visits to other schools, including Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama. Wade hasn't said anything to hint at a decommitment, but if there is anything we have learned from the 2016 class, it's that nobody is a certainty until the very end.
- Jeffrey Okudah was one Buckeye target who add a 5th star to his resume Monday. Okudah is the highest rated S by both Rivals and 247Sports. The 6'2, 194-pound safety has a massive list of schools wanting to acquire his services but on Oct. 1, Okudah named Ohio State the leader in his recruitment. Okudah would be a solid addition to the Buckeye secondary as he has the awareness to know when to drop back in coverage and when to move up and play the run, and he has the athletic ability to strive in either situation.
- James Robinson was another Buckeye recruit to add a 5th star on Monday. Robinson plays WR and is one of the best at his position in his class. With offers from top-tier programs across the country including Alabama, Clemson and Florida State, the Buckeyes are going to have plenty of competition winning over Robinson. As it stands, Clemson is looked upon as the favorite, but Robinson is still early on in his recruitment process and hasn't made any decisions. The only thing that is for sure is that Ohio State is on his list of schools and should not be counted out.
