Although there may additional thoughts later this week, this is the quick, post game recap.

Ohio State began their title defense with a convincing win over Virginia Tech 42-24. It was a game of ebbs and flows. The Buckeyes started strongly by getting a 14-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter, Buckeye miscues and Hokie determination led to a VT halftime lead of 17-14. Ohio State dominated the 2nd half, outscoring Virginia Tech 28-7, keyed by a Braxton Miller Spin Move 53 yard TD run and a beautiful stop & go TD pass from JT Barrett to Michael Thomas.

There was some bad news, however, as VT quarterback Michael Brewer suffered a broken collarbone (AWash sack) early in the 3rd quarter. That removed a significant offensive dimension from VT.

Ohio State finished with 572 total yards; 212 passing and 360 rushing. Virginia Tech amassed 320; 192 passing and 128 rushing. Ezekiel had 122 yards rushing, backed up by 99 yards by Cardale.

1st quarter

The 1st quarter started out fairly well for Ohio State. Virginia Tech took the opening kickoff and didn’t do anything with it, going three & out. The punt was downed at OSU’s 36 yard line, and somewhat to my surprise, Cardale Jones opened at quarterback for the Buckeyes. Eight plays later, CJ hits Curtis Samuel on a 24 yard TD pass; OSU up 7-0. OSU forced another VT punt on the ensuing series, then took over on their 20 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Ezekiel Elliott popped through the line for an 80 yard TD run. Less than nine minutes into the game, and Ohio State is up 14-0. Man, is this going to be easy.

However, the 1st quarter ended on an ominous note for the Buckeyes. A holding call negated a Cardale Jones TD run, followed by a Paris Campbell drop (his 2nd of the game), followed by a missed (wide right) FG. However, Ohio State still held a 14-0 lead. So far, so good.

2nd quarter

The 2nd quarter was a reverse of the first. VT stiffened up on defense and found some creative life on offense. They utilized the roll-out/throwback pass to good use. Once on a 51 yard pass & run to fullback Sam Rogers and again at the end of the half to tight end Ryan Malleck. The 2nd touchdown was set up by Zeke fumbling a punt, recovered by VT on OSU’s 38 yard line. OSU was making too many mistakes and Virginia Tech was savvy enough to capitalize on them. The two TD’s and a FG later, and VT had the halftime lead 17-14.

At halftime, OSU had 267 total yards, 95 passing (6-13-1) and 172 rushing (14 carries). VT had 211 total yards, 139 passing (9-13) and 72 rushing 23 attempts.

Ohio State’s mistakes and Virginia Tech’s tenacity get the Hokies the lead. This was not a well played 2nd quarter by OSU at all.

3rd quarter

The situation improved a bit in the 3rd quarter. By a lot. On OSU’s first possession, Braxton Miller snagged a seam route from CJ and turned it into a 54 yard TD pass to give OSU a 21-17 lead. After a VT turnover (fumble), Brax took the Wildcat snap darted off left tackle, left 3 Hokies grasping for air with a Spin Move, then raced the 53 yards into the end zone to push OSU’s lead to 28-17, which is how the 3rd quarter ended. The Buckeyes came up with a beautiful Tyvis Powell INT of VT quarterback Brendon Motley.

I do need to mention that Motley entered the game this quarter due to an injury suffered by starting QB Michael Brewer in VT’s first series. He was buried by Adolphus Washington on a pass rush and immediately left the game, with what was later diagnosed as a broken left collarbone. We at tBBC hope that Mr. Brewer has a full and quick recover. He is one hell of a ball player.

4th quarter

With Brewer and his passing capabilities out of the game, most of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th quarter were dominated by Ohio State. Ohio State scored on a 10 yard keeper to move the lead to 35-15 at the 12:26 mark. Midway through the quarter, OSU brought in their back up QB to get him some work; J.T. Barrett. Maybe you’ve heard of him. At the 8:14 mark, JT hit Michael Thomas down the left sideline on a beautiful stop & go, that absolutely froze the VT cornerback and moved the score to 42-17.. VT got on the board with 1:55 remaining when Motley tossed a 17 yard pass to 42-24 Isaiah Ford to make the score
