No. 2/3 Men's Hockey Ties Bowling Green, 2-2, in Home Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 2/3 Ohio State men's hockey team tied Bowling Green, 2-2, Friday in Value City Arena in the Buckeyes' home opener for the 2005-06 campaign. The Buckeyes, who beat the Falcons 7-2 on the road Thursday, move to 2-1-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. BGSU moves to 0-3-1 and 0-1-1 in league play. Sophomore Tom Fritsche had two assists in the game for a five-point weekend.
The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 from late in the first period until sophomore John Dingle scored the game-tying goal 4:03 into the third, marking his first goal of the season. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the game, 43-19, but BGSU goalie Jon Horrell made 41 stops, including five in overtime, to earn first star of the game honors.
Ohio State opened the scoring 2:26 into the first period, when Kyle Hood's (So., Osoyoos, British Columbia) blast from the point trickled through BGSU goalie Jon Horrell with the Buckeyes on the power play. Tom Fritsche (So., Parma, Ohio) and Andrew Schembri (Jr., Mississauga, Ontario) picked up the assists on the goal. The Falcons tied the game 1:01 later, when Alex Foster scored from in close. Jonathan Matsuomoto assisted on the goal, which came at 3:27. Mike Falk put Bowling Green up, 2-1, with his goal at 17:38, assisted by Matsumoto and Don Morrison. The Buckeyes controlled play for much of the period, outshooting the Falcons, 20-5.
Neither team was able to score in the second period. Ohio State put nine shots on net, while Caruso stopped all 11 Falcon attempts. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play.
Dingle (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored 4:03 into the third period, completing a rush with Domenic Maiani (So., Shelby Township, Mich.) and Fritsche. The Buckeyes had nine shots in the period, Bowling Green four. Each team was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind in the period, which carried over into the overtime. The Buckeyes' major penalty kill began at 15:44 before it was ended on the major penalty against the Falcons at 17:02.
The teams began overtime skating 4-on-4. The Buckeyes had a power play for just under two minutes, but were unable to convert. The best scoring chance in overtime was by the Falcons' Matsumoto, whose shot hit the post. The Buckeyes attempted 11 shots in overtime, putting five on net.
The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the game, 43-19. Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) had 17 saves in 65 minutes in goal, while Horrell ended the game with 41 stops in 65 minutes.
Ohio State converted 1-of-8 power-play chances in the game and stopped the Falcons on all seven opportunities.
Postgame Notes
The Buckeyes return to action with a two-game series at Western Michigan Oct. 28-29. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. in Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Fritsche ended the weekend with two goals and three assists for five points. He leads the Buckeyes in scoring with five assists and seven points on the season.
Ohio State is 4-1-2 in home openers in Value City Arena and 31-9-3 all-time in home openers.
The Buckeyes are unbeaten in their last 11 games against Bowling Green, with a 10-0-1 record. The Buckeyes are 9-2-1 against the Falcons in Value City Arena and are unbeaten in their last eight (7-0-1).
The series was the opener of Ohio Cup play for the year, the annual competition between the Buckeyes, Falcons and Miami won by the team with the best record against its instate opponents.

On Bowling Green's rebound control... "We did a great job on rebound control, we definitely did a better job of minimizing the rebounds. We needed to make an adjustment after last night. They had more shots tonight, but they were a lot more manageable."
