Ohio State Puckeyes No. 2/3 this week

Home opener tonight at 7:00 against BG. The Buckeyes have too much fire power as well as an awesome power play defense. The Buckeyes scored one short handed goal last night and would have had two had the BG defender not tripped Fritsche on his way to a goal. #1 Michigan hosts #10 Michigan St. Saturday night. Michigan St has a very good goalie, but they lost senior forawrd Dave Booth for a few weeks (or more) due to a shoulder injury. This ought to be a very good match.

BG ties the Buckeyes last night 2-2 in OT. The BG goalie played the game of his life.

No. 2/3 Men's Hockey Ties Bowling Green, 2-2, in Home Opener

Oct. 21, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 2/3 Ohio State men's hockey team tied Bowling Green, 2-2, Friday in Value City Arena in the Buckeyes' home opener for the 2005-06 campaign. The Buckeyes, who beat the Falcons 7-2 on the road Thursday, move to 2-1-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. BGSU moves to 0-3-1 and 0-1-1 in league play. Sophomore Tom Fritsche had two assists in the game for a five-point weekend.

The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 from late in the first period until sophomore John Dingle scored the game-tying goal 4:03 into the third, marking his first goal of the season. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the game, 43-19, but BGSU goalie Jon Horrell made 41 stops, including five in overtime, to earn first star of the game honors.

Ohio State opened the scoring 2:26 into the first period, when Kyle Hood's (So., Osoyoos, British Columbia) blast from the point trickled through BGSU goalie Jon Horrell with the Buckeyes on the power play. Tom Fritsche (So., Parma, Ohio) and Andrew Schembri (Jr., Mississauga, Ontario) picked up the assists on the goal. The Falcons tied the game 1:01 later, when Alex Foster scored from in close. Jonathan Matsuomoto assisted on the goal, which came at 3:27. Mike Falk put Bowling Green up, 2-1, with his goal at 17:38, assisted by Matsumoto and Don Morrison. The Buckeyes controlled play for much of the period, outshooting the Falcons, 20-5.

Neither team was able to score in the second period. Ohio State put nine shots on net, while Caruso stopped all 11 Falcon attempts. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play.

Dingle (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored 4:03 into the third period, completing a rush with Domenic Maiani (So., Shelby Township, Mich.) and Fritsche. The Buckeyes had nine shots in the period, Bowling Green four. Each team was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind in the period, which carried over into the overtime. The Buckeyes' major penalty kill began at 15:44 before it was ended on the major penalty against the Falcons at 17:02.

The teams began overtime skating 4-on-4. The Buckeyes had a power play for just under two minutes, but were unable to convert. The best scoring chance in overtime was by the Falcons' Matsumoto, whose shot hit the post. The Buckeyes attempted 11 shots in overtime, putting five on net.

The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the game, 43-19. Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) had 17 saves in 65 minutes in goal, while Horrell ended the game with 41 stops in 65 minutes.

Postgame Quotes
OSU sophomore forward John Dingle
On the game... "We can't be happy with one point, but we came away with some positives. We were playing our systems well and good things were happening, but we had to get desperate to make a goal. We need to mix our play up because we're playing against good players in this league.

OSU head coach John Markell
On Bowling Green "These teams can compete and Bowling Green came with a better effort tonight. It's early in the year and these guys on our team are learning to compete. We're a new club and we have to continue the learning process. We found a way not to lose and that point is going to be important down the line. It's a learning process and we have a lot of young guys out there. We're only four games into the season and we have to live through it. It's a tribute to the CCHA because it's a tough league."

Bowling Green head coach Scott Paluch
On the game... "It was a terrific college hockey game tonight. It was important for our club, especially after last night. This (the Schottenstein Center) has been a tough place for us to play and I think our players did a good job getting themselves together this morning."

On Bowling Green's rebound control... "We did a great job on rebound control, we definitely did a better job of minimizing the rebounds. We needed to make an adjustment after last night. They had more shots tonight, but they were a lot more manageable."

On the penalty kill... "Out penalty kill really responded well as the game went on. The response is significant after last night. We played well against a really good team."

Bret how does Jack Johnson look, someone said today this maybe be his first and last year in ann arbor?

I wouldn't be shocked. Jack Johnson has been the most intimidating player in a Michigan uniform that I have ever seen. In our 3-2 win over BC he absolutely crushed someone at center ice to set the stage for the game. He hit the goalie with a slapshot that was so hard that it knocked the goalie's mask off.

He's also averaged 2 points a game so far. He's got two goals already and a couple of assists to go with it. He is clearly the controlling force on the ice when he is on the ice. He does need to limit his penalty minutes though...

Johnson

You took Brule because Jack Johnson was already off the board. You got Brule at No. 6 overall and Johnson went No. 3.

No. 1 Michigan tied No. 10 Michigan State 3-3 last Saturday in Ann Arbor. It was the first game that Johnson hasn't scored at least one point in, but he did absolutely crush some poor Spartan with a hit that sent him into the locker room early.
