"I just want a chance to get into somebody’s camp and show my athletic ability," Matthews said. "I want to go out there and make somebody’s special teams, and see if I can grow from there and move into maybe a strong safety position or outside linebacker, wherever they would like to use me."
never quite understood why he rarely saw the field, always seemed like a player

UH, seeing as this is "Pro Day", why are those not eligible for the draft even participating?
I think the best example of why underclassmen participate is Drew Carter--he ran like a 4.2 after his Junior year at OSU's Pro Day! That helped draw attention to him (1) because he hadn't gotten much playing time his first three years of eligibility, and (2) because he ripped his knee apart his senior year, when he did get playing time, and that 40-time from the year before showed the pros how fast he is/was.

Lydell Ross RB Ross (5-11¼, 226) ran his 40s in 4.84 and 4.84. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.68 seconds and the long shuttle in 12.09. He had a 30½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 broad jump and 21 bench presses.

Slower than Brandon Joe and almost as slow as Simon Fraser.
