The Ohio State football team is in the thick of transfer portal season, and on Monday there was no shortage of headlines.
Ohio State is back into game week mode. After a couple weeks off, Ryan Day and the Ohio State football team are once again preparing for a weekend showdown. The Buckeyes are gearing up for the first round of the newly-expanded College Football Playoff, where they will play host to Tennessee.
With the last time Ohio State took the field being the disappointing performance against Michigan, the Buckeyes will be looking for a stronger performance this weekend. With multiple weeks to prepare, the coaches and players should be able to do so.
Because of the first playoff game being around the corner, many of the headlines surrounding the Buckeyes will be focused on the game. However, preparing for the game is not the only task on hand for the Ohio State coaching staff, as the team is also in the thick of transfer portal season.
The transfer portal has greatly evolved the last couple years, especially with NIL being introduced to college football. In fact, the transfer portal is quickly becoming just as important, if not more important, than traditional recruiting measures. Ohio State knows this and has taken great advantage of the portal, especially last year when it brought in the likes of Caleb Downs, Will Howard, and Quinshon Judkins, among others.
Ohio State is once again looking to improve through the portal, and looks to especially be focusing on the offensive line. The Buckeyes are already interested in a number of OL transfers, and on Monday the team offered former Cal Poly offensive lineman Brady Norton.
Norton was a FCS Freshman All-American this season for Cal Poly and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He played in three games his freshman year, preserving his redshirt and he played in 11 games this season as a redshirt sophomore. Norton was impressive for Cal Poly earning grades from Pro Football Focus of a 90.6 pass-blocking for the 2024 season, which is No. 8 in all of FCS.
Norton is expected to be one of the more sought after offensive lineman this portal season, with visits already scheduled to schools like Wake Forest, Virginia, Kansas State, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Michigan.
Norton is viewed as a three-star transfer prospect by 247Sports, and he is the No. 19 IOL transfer prospect and the No. 249 overall transfer prospect.
Ohio State saw two more possible transfer targets officially enter their names into the portal on Monday.
Sticking with the efforts to improve the offensive line, former Minnesota offensive tackle Philip Daniels is a name Ohio State will certainly be interested in. Daniels started the last four games of the season for the Golden Gophers at right tackle, and was presumed to be a starter for them next season.
However, he now will be looking for a new team to play for, and his fit with Ohio State is not hard to see.
Daniels is also very familiar with Ohio State, despite the Buckeyes not playing Minnesota this season. Daniels is originally from Cincinnati and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. He was likely interested in Ohio State as a high school prospect, but he never received an offer from the Buckeyes. Ohio State very well may try and make up for this, and would love to create a homecoming of sorts.
As a transfer, 247Sports has him listed as the No. 4 OT transfer prospect and the No. 36 overall transfer prospect.
Another potential transfer target for the Buckeyes that entered his name into the portal Monday was former Auburn edge Amaris Williams. Heavily targeted by the Buckeyes during his recruitment, and at one point viewing Ohio State as his top school, Ohio State will certainly be interested in adding him to the fold for next season.
Williams impressed this season for the Tigers, and because of that Ohio State will not be alone in its pursuit of him. Outside of the Buckeyes, other teams that will likely be involved in his transfer recruitment will be Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, North Carolina and Penn State.
As a transfer, 247Sports has Williams as a four-star and the No. 3 edge transfer prospect. He is also the No. 16 overall transfer prospect.
