The Buckeyes offered a 2025 three-star running back on Monday, and there were more rumblings in the transfer portal.
The college football world has been on high-alert with the recent opening of the transfer portal. Since the portal window opened, what seems like every school has been involved in a headline. Because of this, many of the recruiting headlines have been focused on transfers. However, standard recruiting continues to take place as well, and the Buckeyes are making noise as they look to close out the 2024 class and get to work on 2025.
Ohio State is busy wrapping up its 2024 recruiting cycle. The Buckeyes have 23 verbal commitments in the class, and are still working on adding to it. The team played host two its two top remaining targets just last weekend, and only positives have been reported since the visits.
Because the Buckeyes’ 2024 class has been nearly-complete for months, the Ohio State coaching staff has been able to get a head start in the 2025 class. Ohio State already holds four verbal commitments in next year’s cycle, and is continuously looking to add to it.
On Monday, the Buckeyes kicked off the week by offering 2025 three-star running back Jeff Overton (Woodbridge, VA / Freedom).
The Buckeyes are obviously not alone in their pursuit of Overton, and he holds a dozen scholarship offers already from programs like Duke, James Madison, Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, South Carolina and others.
The sophomore will likely see his recruitment grow as he is coming off an impressive season where he accumulated 2,532 yards on the ground and a whopping 34 touchdowns. He also added 339 receiving yards and five touchdowns through the air.
It is still rather early in Overton’s recruitment, but Duke and Virginia Tech seem to be the early favorites, as they have already hosted him on unofficial visits. Look for the Buckeyes to work to get him on campus at least once for spring or summer recruiting camps, and if the interest remains mutual, a follow-up visit on a game day.
Overton is the No. 52 RB in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 619 overall prospect. He is also the No. 17 recruit out of Virginia.

Quick Hits
- Ohio State is also heavily involved in transfer portal rumblings. The Buckeyes have been reportedly looking at defensive linemen in the portal and have found a target. Former UTSA defensive end Trey Moore has already visited with Texas, but he is scheduled to visit with Ohio State this week. Moore was one of the nation’s top edge rushers last year, racking up 14 sacks.
In addition to his expected visit to Texas, UTSA EDGE transfer Trey Moore is also expected to visit Ohio State, sources tell @247sports.
The Ohio State visit is expected to take place next week. Moore ranks third nationally with 14 sacks.https://t.co/h8mngFnH54 pic.twitter.com/Dnsqcdjode

- Ohio State has also been linked to former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward. Ward is one of the top transfers at what may be the most important position in football, so he has his list of suitors. It has been reported that the Buckeyes have been in contact with Ward, but there doesn’t appear to be that much smoke for the Wazzu transfer to end up in Columbus. Ward will reportedly visit with Miami today, another team that has been connected to him since he entered the portal.
Washington State transfer QB Cam Ward is visiting Miami tomorrow, his parents told me earlier today. Ward graduated this weekend, flew home tonight and will visit the Hurricanes on Tuesday.
His father said they are still talking through all his options.
