Game Thread Ohio State @ Northwestern - 10/18/19, 8:30PM (BTN)

Post-Game News & Notes

1. Prior to the season, many so-called experts predicted that Northwestern would be the proverbial "trap" game for Ohio State, as the Buckeyes would be sluggish coming off a bye week, playing an unusual Friday night game on the road, and potentially looking ahead to the huge match-up with Wisconsin the following week. Maybe it was a trap game. Maybe the team was off their normal routine. Maybe the Buckeyes were looking ahead. Maybe it just didn't matter because Northwestern is just so bad....

2. And the Buckeyes are just so good. Yes, I suppose it's still fair to say that Ohio State has played "nobody" yet this season, and that the first true test will come next week against Wisconsin. But even "nobody" can score a few points now and then, or occasionally turn a mismatch into a close game, and yet none of the nobodies on Ohio State's schedule has accomplished anything close to that. On the season, Ohio State has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 348 to 56, which is an average per game of 50 to 8. Ohio State has scored at least 34 points in every game (and 42+ six times), and has held its last six opponents to 10 points or less. The Buckeyes' smallest margin of victory has been 24 points, and that was against a top-25 team with a stout defense. In terms of total yards, Ohio State has out-gained its opponents 3,687 to 1,603, which is an average per game of 527 to 229. And much of this production has come with the starters on the bench for much of the second halves.

3. In a 52-3 rout, it's a pretty safe assumption that everyone on the winning team played well, so I won't spend much time on individual performances. Master Teague and Marcus Crowley each had career-long runs (73 yards and 53 yards, respectively); J.K. Dobbins had the second-longest run of his Buckeye career (68 yards). Austin Mack had the longest touchdown reception of his Buckeye career (23 yards). Justin Fields had four more total touchdowns (all passing), giving him a total of 30 for the season. Chase Young had the Buckeyes' only sack; he now has 9.5 sacks this year. Sevyn Banks and Amir Riep each had an interception. Blake Haubeil had a career-long 55-yard field goal (tied for second-longest in Ohio State history).

4. A special shout out to the Buckeye defense, which held Northwestern to 3 points and 199 total yards. Although the Wildcats had some minor success on the ground (46 carries, 166 yards, 3.6 average; not counting botched punt as a rushing attempt), they had absolutely no success through the air. Northwestern's quarterbacks were a combined 6 for 21 (28.6%) for 42 yards, no touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Northwestern was 5 for 21 (23.8%) on 3rd and 4th down conversions, with three of those conversions coming by way of Ohio State penalties. Northwestern's longest play from scrimmage was just 16 yards. That was total domination.

5. Bring on Wisconsin!

Just a few observations...
I’m more impressed by Olave every game. He does EVERYTHING you want in a receiver - runs crisp routes, doesn’t drop balls, knows where the first down markers are, makes the simple catches, makes the difficult catches and man does he block. His blocking on JK’s first long run was outstanding.

Malik Harrison is everywhere. He’s reading plays so much better, taking great angles and absolutely bringing it when he gets there. There was a really impressive play where he sniffed out a screen pass and lit up the NW RB as the ball got there.

Chase Young is unblockable. You better double him, move the pocket away from him and get the ball out quick.

That RB pool is so much deeper than what I thought when the season started. JK is on a different level this year. Master Teague is a beast and I honestly believe that both Crowley and Chambers would start at many P5 schools.

Oh yeah, and how could I forget? HAUBEIL!!! That kick was good from 65!!

I did love the way lots of young players got in the game and had really big plays and chances to celebrate.
But hey! I think we "mowed their grass".
We had big plays by Riep, Banks, Jones, Haubiel, and I probably forget a few.
