The third depth chart of the season features little change as Ohio State hosts Northern Illinois on Saturday.
It wasn't always pretty, but Ohio State eventually pulled away from Hawaii in its home opener. The Buckeyes played extremely well on the defensive side of the ball, earning a shutout for the effort for a 38-0 win over the Rainbow Warriors. Now Ohio State plays host to Northern Illinois, which has consistently been one of the best team in the MAC. In fact, the Huskies haven't won anything less than 10 games in the last six seasons. Still, the depth chart seems to be mostly set with what the coaching staff wants, as there's little change from last week's version.
Urban Meyer made it even clearer that Cardale Jones is still the starting quarterback, despite having pulled him for J.T. Barrett early in the game against Hawaii. Both quarterbacks struggled finding consistency with the offense, but eventually the Buckeyes were able to pull away. Barrett remains the backup, though still tagged with the OR between the two.
Ezekiel Elliott remains the starting running back after a 27-carry, 101-yard performance, adding three of Ohio State's touchdowns against the Rainbow Warriors. He'll look to continue his streak of consecutive 100-yard games going against the Huskies. Backup running back Bri'onte Dunn recorded his first touchdown of the season against Hawaii, and Warren Ball rounds up the position at third-string.
Even with the return of Corey Smith, Parris Campbell remains the starter at one of the two other wide receiver spots. Jalin Marshall moves into the other. Johnnie Dixon is listed as the backup to Campbell with Terry McLaurin as the third-string. Dontre Wilson and James Clark are listed after Campbell. Corey Smith appears to be having some trouble rising back up, as he remains the third-string receiver under Thomas and backup Jeff Greene.
Braxton Miller remains the starter at H-back after another solid outing against the Rainbow Warriors. Although the play-calling started to go away from Miller in the second half, there's no questioning his importance to the Buckeyes. Curtis Samuel provides relief as the backup, who had a productive day against Hawaii as well.
The tight end spot is firmly locked down by Nick Vannett, with Marcus Baugh listed as the backup once again. No change there, nor would I expect one for the remainder of the season, barring injury.
The offensive line stays the same up front, with Taylor Decker, Billy Price, Jacoby Boren, Pat Elflein, and Chase Farris (from left to right).
Switching to defense, from one end to the other, your starters are listed as Joey Bosa, Adolphus Washington, Tommy Schutt, and Tyquan Lewis. Sam Hubbard is the backup to Bosa, while Donovan Munger OR Tracy Sprinkle backs up Washington. Joel Hale OR Michael Hill back up Schutt, while Jayln Holmes backs up Lewis with Darius Slade closing that side of the line out.
The linebackers remain the same after great performances from Joshua Perry at weak outside linebacker, Raekwon McMillan in at middle linebacker, and Darron Lee finishing at strong outside linebacker.
At cornerback things stay the same, as Gareon Conley and Eli Apple man the outside edges with Damon Webb and Marshon Lattimore OR Denzel Ward listed as the backups. For safeties, the starters are still Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell. Erick Smith is listed as the backup to Bell, while Cam Burrows is under Powell.
Jalin Marshall remains the starter at punt returner, though a few times we saw Braxton Miller out there as a second option for returning punts. No sight of Ezekiel Elliott as a returner either, so it looks like that might have been a one-time thing.
Jack Willoughby and Sean Nuernberger are still listed as starters with OR in between them for place kicking. Willoughby, however, seems to be the lone starter based off the opportunities and him being on the field for the entire game. Willoughby connected on a 20-yard field goal and also tacked on all of the extra points. Cameron Johnston is still the starter at punter. The kick returners are still listed as Curtis Samuel and Warren Ball, so no change there, either.
