Game Thread Ohio State @ Nebraska, 10/14/17 @ 7:30 ET (FS1)

Those hot tub commercials were brutal. The Big Bear (or Kroger, or whatever) commercials weren't much better.
You were done with Cooper in his first year losing to Michigan? That's harsh.

I was much more forgiving. I tend to look at a coach's win trend. Of course, he started low (4), but off the top of my head I believe he won more games each year. Of course, he laid an egg against Michigan most years, and then the season was over and then it seemed no one cared about the bowl games. So I was all in "wait til next year" mode. Anyway, I was wrong and it's a good think we got our Tressel and then we all know what happened from there.

Well, I was also a fan of Earl. Back in the day we didn't get many games on TV,right? So it was radio and waiting for the Earl Bruce show on Sunday mornings. When Earl was fired it was a pretty sad day. I remember my dad being OK with it, but I was pretty bummed. That was my senior year of HS. So, I show up to campus and this country fried chicken comes up to Block O to talk to us before the first game? Hell, he had two strikes against him before he opened his mouth.

Travelogue: My big takeaway from attending the game on Saturday is that those Nebby fans deserve much better (Captain obvious). My wife and I stayed at a hotel out by the airport and took a Lyft ride in to the game. The Lyft driver was a Nebraska alum, and he told us not to expect much opposition. When I told him that we were at the last OSU game in Lincoln, he said "oh yeah, the Bauserman game". LOL, how many fans can name the opposing backup quarterback from six years ago? Well, basically all Husker fans. Just like the last time, we were treated extremely well by the locals, I only wish we treated visiting fans so well. We went to the buckeye bash which was held in the Pinnacle Arena, their basketball arena, and there must have been 1000 attendees. There were reported to be folks from 37 different states attending the bash. We sat in section 20, row 92, southwest corner, which barely feels like you are in the stadium. The wind was brutal. Husker fans were so fed up they let their balloons fly near the end of the first half after a rare first down. I would guess that maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the fans did not return for the second half, and who could blame them? The Husker fans we talked to were thinking this blowout would be the final nail in Riley's coffin. The seven hour drive back to Denver was better than the return trip in 2011.

A lot of us Buckeye fans felt this way during the John Cooper years. Cooper did a lot of good things for the program (national recruiting, being "relevant" nationally, a pair of #2 finishes in the polls, beating Notre Dame twice), but his failure to beat Michigan (2-10-1) or win bowl games (3-8) turned the fan base against him early and he was never able to overcome that.

After the loss to Michigan State at home in 1998 (a 28-point dog), many fans gave up on Coop and rooted for him to lose and get fired so that the program could wipe the slate clean and rebuild. I reached my personal breaking point right before the 2001 Outback Bowl when WR Reggie Germany was declared ineligible with a Blutarskian 0.0 GPA, and I openly rooted for my beloved Buckeyes to lose. They did (24-7), we hired Jim Tressel, and the rest is history: 106 wins, 22 losses, .828 winning percentage, 7 Big Ten championships, and a national title. May you have a similar result (without the Big Ten championships, of course - those belong to us!).
i was in this category, too. I have forgiven Cooper, but I haven't forgotten, either.

Cooper really did some good things...taking Buckeye recruiting national, recruiting some big-time players and award winners, making us a relevant program on the national scene, 1996-97 Rose Bowl (still one of my favorite games EVER). But his baffling inability to beat inferior scUM teams, poor Bowl record, '98 MSU, and the way the program seemed to be running off the tracks at the end of his tenure taint all of the good.

I can say I'm not sure we'd be where we are today without Coop, though. His recruiting laid the foundation for that '02 NC team, and his overall recruiting elevated the program.

one of the things that is seldom mentioned is that Coop brought a modern day strength and conditioning program with him to Ohio State and elevated the off season training facilities and program. No question he did some great things for the program that laid the foundation for what it is now. This is why I have forgiven him.

Nebraska QB on Ohio State: ‘That’s What We Want To Be’

17-10-14-FB-0059-DH-1170x780.jpg

Ohio State’s 56-14 win over Nebraska was a major statement that the Buckeyes are legitimate 2017 national title contenders. But for the Cornhuskers and their fans, it was also a three-hour reminder of just how far they are from being at that level.

OSU scored touchdowns on its first eight possessions. The defense dominated the Huskers so thoroughly that the Nebraska tradition of releasing balloons after their first score was instead celebrated by many after the team merely managed a first down.

“Ohio State, when they are rolling and have the running back going, the quarterback going, the run-option stuff going, and the quarterback is going like that, that’s kind of, like I’ve said for a while, the standard,” said Nebraska coach Mike Riley.

The Buckeyes had little trouble doing whatever they wanted against the once-feared Blackshirts defense. J.T. Barrett finished the night 27-for-33 for 325 yards and 5 touchdowns, and added another 48 yards and two scores on the ground.

“They went wild,” said Nebraska linebacker Mohamed Barry. “They know what they want to do. They dictate what they want to do.”

They remember because it's why they won. Braxton doesn't get hurt and it's 0-6 vs the Buckeyes.

To me, the MSU loss was mostly just bad luck. The Buckeyes had Burress contained pretty well until Damon Moore separated his shoulder diving into the end zone on a pic-six. That was middle 3rd quarter, 24-7 Bucks. Without him at corner (safety?) all Sparty had to do was toss jump balls up for 6' 6" Burress and he just shredded for three drives. That was a heart wrenching meltdown. Still hurts to this day.

I respect Coop for rejuvenating the program. But whenever I reflect on his tenure, the 14% graduation rate never fails to pop up.
