A big win in a tough environment!
Ilie Van Engelen came back in the 2nd set, down a break and closed it out in the tie breaker. Love for the big guy to get some confidence entering into the B1G championships and NCAA's.

The Match of the year in the Big Ten will be played Friday at OSU!

Indiana is a big shocker, undefeated in the Big Ten, and will be placing their #20 ranking on the line when they come to Columbus looking for a major upset.
Buckeyes will need to be focused, sharp and bring their best game to capture their 6th straight Big Ten Tennis title and championship trophy.

Go Bucks!

Yes, I am afraid that the Hoosiers might take one of the singles matches into a tiebreaker:biggrin2:

I thought that you were Coach Tucker:osu:
Please don't be afraid of Hoosiers taking the team into tiebreakers...

No problem last weekend with tie breakers for the Buckeyes.

OSU record vs. Wisconsin and Minnesota in breakers = 10-0!

Gracelhink has forgotten a lot of tennis over the years.

Coach Tucker has forgotten more tennis than all the tennis accumulated Gracelhink has even known.

The ITA released their weekly rankings and,
just when it looked like OSU was a lock for a #2 or #3 seed, . . .

the ITA computers bumped both USC and Tennessee above the Buckeyes.:(

Tennessee (20-3) and USC (21-2) have razor thin leads over the Buckeyes (21-2) for those coveted 2-3 seeds.
It is not impossible but will be awefully difficult for the Buckeyes to earn enough points to overtake either UT or USC. One or both could stumble early in their conference tournament but. . .
The remaining schedule (vs. #24 Indiana and in the B1G tournament, possible opponents #18 Illinois) will not offer a lot of potential points.

After the tough news of the team rankings, the individual singles' rankings brought a little more joy to Buckeye fans.

Last week's ITA rankings placed seven Buckeye single's players in the top 125, the most of any NCAA team.

This week's ITA single's rankings found 8 OSU players had earned enough points to be individually recognized in the top 125.

#5 Blaz Rola
#12 Chase Buchanan
#49 Matt Allare
#61 Devin McCarthy
#67 Peter Kobelt
#90 Balazs Novak
#93 Ilie VanEngelen
#122 Nelson Vick

Congratulations Buckeyes on a ranking well deserved!

Pac 10 looks to be fairly loaded...so if the rankings are to be believed, there is a reasonable chance USC drops one.

The SEC doesn't look as tough as the P10..but again, perhaps some tough matches there for UT...maybe a conference tourney final with UK....

The ITA formula is slowly being leaked to the public, probably because of the questions surrounding the inequity of the women's rankings--Stanford and Florida have been swapping the #1 spot in the polls in spite of Stanford's undefeated season and their dominant victory over Florida at the ITA's. Here is what the ITA tells us on how the conputers configure the rankings.
LINK ITA
ITA computer Poll CRITERIA

Wins vs. Top 25
Wins vs. Top 10
Wins vs. Top 5
Avg. Ranking of 9 Best Wins
Road Wins vs. Top 25 (10% Bonus)

So comparing OSU, vs. USC and Tenn, they are separated by a thin margin. Buckeyes could benefit from a victory vs. #24 Indiana, but unless they defeat #18 Illinois in the Big Ten would not benefit from the same level of points that USC or Tenn have available in the SEC and Pac 10.

Noticably absent from the poll formula/criteria are any penalties for losses.
So the 2 bad losses by USC vs. #8 Stanford and #13 Duke,
and 3 losses by #2 Tennessee against #1 UVa, #7 Baylor and #19 Mississippi State don't actually hurt their ranking.:(
OSU's losses are vs. #1 Uva and at #6 Texas A & M.

Conversely, OSU's 9 quality wins are against #5, 10, 11, 12, 15, 18, 21, 23, 27.
that compares to Tenn wins vs. #5 twice, 9, 11, 13 twice, 17, 18, & 20.
and USC's wins vs. #8 twice, 9, 10, 12, 14, 17, 22, 24.

Even though the possiblity of losses in the tournament exists, a loss would not significantly hurt either UT or USC, only prevent them from really putting distance over the Buckeyes.
Tennessee can rack up some more major points in the SEC championships where they would potentially face #5, #11, #17, and #20 again.
USC can rack up major points in the Pac 10 where they could face #8, 9, 10, 14.
Doesn't look as likely for the Buckeyes to jump either with only opportunities in the B1G #18, 23, 24, 27.
