Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

The No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team (21-2, 5-0 Big Ten) moved to 5-0 in the Big Ten with a 7-0 shutout over No. 60 Michigan State Friday at Stickney Tennis Center. It was the first home match for the Buckeyes since Feb. 27. The win extended the five-time defending Big Ten champion's conference win streak to 71, which began in 2004.
Senior co-captain Balazs Novak clinched the victory for the Buckeyes in their first outdoor contest of the year, beating Aaron Pfister 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for his 22nd win on the season. Novak also moved to 4-0 at No. 4.
The Scarlet and Gray moved to 58-2 as the No. 3 nationally ranked team. With the victory, Ohio State remains undefeated at home with a perfect 12-0 mark and improved its home win streak to 122 straight.
The Buckeyes are now 39-35 all-time vs. Michigan State and 12-0 since Ty Tucker became head coach in 1999.
In doubles competition, senior co-captain Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt, the nation's 13th-ranked duo, rebounded from their loss at Kentucky Wednesday, by defeating Jason Norville and John Stratton, 8-2. The Buckeye tandem picked up their 10th victory at the No. 1 position and currently are 12-5 overall.
Competing for the first time as a team, Buckeyes Novak and Ille Van Engelen scored the doubles point for the home team, beating Denis Bogatov and Drew Lied, 8-1, at No. 3. Van Engelen moves to 4-1 in doubles, while Novak improves to 15-5.
Junior Chase Buchanan and senior co-captain Shuhei Uzawa concluded doubles play by coming back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Austin Brooks and Pfister, 8-7(9). Buchanan and Uzawa move to 5-1 in doubles on the season.
Ohio State is an impressive 51-16 in doubles on the season after the three-match sweep.
Singles action began with redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy defeating Stratton in straight-sets 6-3, 6-1. McCarthy, the 53rd ranked player nationally, moves to 8-1 at No. 5 and 22-4 overall.
Buchanan put the Buckeyes up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Bogatov at No. 1. Buchanan, a New Albany, Ohio, native, picked up his 10th win at No. 1 while improving to 18-2 in dual singles. He is 23-5 overall.
Novak's straight-set victory guaranteed the Buckeye victory.
Rounding out singles play, Allare handed Ronnie Hulewicz a 6-3, 6-2 loss at No. 3 for his 13th-consecutive win, improving his overall mark to 25-3 and 16-1 in duals. Van Engelen won a super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6, for his third-consecutive victory to move to 13-5 on the year. Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick downed Lied, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 to preserve the shutout.
Ohio State will resume conference action Sunday as it welcomes No. 23 Michigan to Columbus. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon at the Buckeyes' outdoor venue Stickney Tennis Center.
