Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

I have to believe that Buchanan got worn down by playing six matches in 2 days in bed Georgia heat. Interesting side note is that his brother won the Division II Ohio high school doubles championship on Saturday and a Ohio State recruit one the Division I singles championship. There is another silent verbal that won a state championship also but he is only a junior and I am not sure if Chad Buchanan is a sophomore or junior but he is not the one I am referring to.

Tennis: Central Ohio players shine | The Columbus Dispatch

Good observation re. Chase Buchanan. In his match he did look weary, lethargic between points and did not have the same aggressiveness we have witnessed earlier.
According to the ITA, tOSU as a team came in 5th in the final rankings.
For those who were anticipating how the director's cup would shake out, the men's tennis team will finish behind USC, Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas.

Litl, thanks for the update on the OhsAA tennis tournament.
You are right about central Ohio and the burbs being a hotbed of high school tennis this year.
Glad to hear the good news about Metka and Diaz.

Chase Buchanan, will compete on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer.

From the OSU Tennis Site

Just a note for those concerned about amateur status of student athletes on the pro circuit--NCAA permits play on the pro circuit as long as award money and stipend are within the bounds of allowed compensation.

Chase Buchanan, a member of the Ohio State men's tennis team, was named to the United States Tennis Association Summer Collegiate Team the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced last week. Concluding his sophomore campaign with the Buckeyes this past spring, Buchanan will join 12 other top men's collegiate players for an elite training program on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer.
To start the program off, Buchanan will participate in a Pro Tour Transition camp this week in Boca Raton, Fla., and will be coached by National Coach David Dilucia.
At the heart of the program's initiatives is providing student-athletes with U.S. professional circuit experience, while also maintaining a team-oriented environment. The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA.
The Top 6 student-athletes from the final ITA singles rankings were selected for the elite tour. The remaining seven competitors were chosen by USTA Player Development staff in conjunction with USTA National Coaches and current collegiate coaches.

Elite Slovenian Set to Join Already Talented Buckeye Men?s Tennis Team

Ohio State men's tennis head coach Ty Tucker announced Blaz Rola, a native of Slovenia, will be joining the Buckeyes for the 2011 season after signing a National Letter of Intent. Rola currently is ranked 534 in the ATP singles standings and is 619 as a doubles player.
"Blaz is a big time talent with a legitimate chance to play tennis at the next level," Tucker said. "He has had success in minor league pro tennis, junior grand slams and looks forward to developing his hard court game while pursuing an international business degree. The coaching staff believes he can play at the top of college tennis right from the start."
So far in his young career on the men's professional circuit, Rola has captured a pair of doubles titles out of three appearances and one singles championship in two showings. Compiling a career-circuit singles record of 33-27 and a doubles ledger of 17-10, Rola's 2010 records are 21-10 and 11-5, respectively.
On June 13, Rola won a Futures event in both singles and doubles in Maribor, Slovenia. After dropping the first set on the clay surface, Rola rallied to beat Hungary's Gyorgy Balazs 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Two days earlier Rola paired with Martin Rmus (Slovenia) for his second professional doubles title. The duo outperformed Spain's Javier Marti and Sergio Perez-Perez 6-3, 6-3.
Welcome to your new home Rola, enjoy being a member of the Buckeye family!

and to think that Marcan was ranked in the mid 800s before he came over to play in the United States. That should give you some indication on how good Rola is going to be.

In talking to the individual who gave me the above information is said that many European players when quite a bit over across the pond and come over here and think they will dominate in the college scene and many of them are greatly surprised that they are not as talented in the old USA as they thought they were in their home country.

Recent rankings for USTA have Rola at 490, rising from 1214 in July 2009. (Chase Buchanan is at #990 in USTA, Dino Marcan is at 927 but there rankings are not reliable for comparison purposes.)
In the last 2 tournaments (futures in Italy) Rola has knocked off the #1 seed in each. He has wins over the #233, 301, and 319 ranked players, advancing to the quarters of the July 12-18 tournament and to the finals of the July 19-25 futures event.
Blaz Rola profile can be found on Coretennis and recent tournament activiity on ITF tennis

Liltbuck's information is accurate in the acclimation of international players to the NCAA. European players may overestimate their ability to dominate in the US, but successful indoor and hard court collegiate competition rewards a different style of tennis than the clay court futures events being played in the European circuits.
Much of Rola's rankings improvement has been gained through his clay court victories.
We will wait expectantly to see how that translates at the OSU varsity indoor tennis center and the Stick.

An update on Buckeyes playing on the professional tennis circuit this summer (hopefully all are planning to keep their amateur status).

Chase Buchanan has been playing on a summer futures tour with other NCAA elite players. He is 5-4 on the tour reaching the semis in Rochester and achieving a ranking of 986 with limited play. Buchanan bio

Dino Marcan has been traveling on a futures tour in Europe. He is 2-3 in singles, best finish was in the quarters at Isai, Romania, and has achieved a 923 single's ranking and an impressive 361 doubles ranking with partner Marin Draganja. Marcan Bio

Finally new commit Blaz Rola is blowing up on the ITF futures tour and rankings. He has attained the #3 seed in the upcoming futures event, is 27-12 on the tour this year, and his ranking has jumped another 45 spots to 445! Rola Bio

This is purely speculation on my part but I don't see Buchanan going professional this year. Playing with other elite college players in the United States sort of tells me something.

However, the guy that concerns me is Marcan. Playing the European circuit and not really climbing in the singles rankings but doing quite well with a doubles partner just gives me an inkling that he might stay over there and play doubles. Also, he did have a friend in the United States and if he saw fit to leave the country for the summer what is here to bring him back besides tennis.

Right on target Litl, Buchanan's summer is sponsored by the ITA with the goal of prepping the elite college amateurs for an experience on the Usta tour.
I am also concerned for Marcan, even though he is not havng single's success on the European circuit this summer, accepting money for double's wins (so far over $2500), would make him ineligible for NCAA's.

Would also think that Rola could be tempted by the winner's share of some future's prizes. Most of them are about $10,000 futures events.
With his recent success the prize money he has "turned down" is accumulating to almost $8000 in 2010, and $13k over his brief career. Rola ATP profile.

I would love to see all 3 at the top of the Buckeye lineup next year.
Buchanan and Rola would be a dominant top 2, the playoff in practice for #1 may be the match of the year at the Varsity Indoor tennis center.

With the season end Marcan had last year, he must have felt discouraged. If I was Ty I would remind Dino that a comittment to off season work in training, strengthening and conditioning could catapault Dino to the level of improvement Chase experienced between '09 and '10. Those girlfriends can have a strong attraction to influence guys back to school, studies, and team as well.
With those 3 at the top of the lineup, the balance of the lineup will provide the depth (Novak, Allare, Shuhei, McCarthy), and the Buckeyes will make another strong run at the NCAA's and should probably be considered the favorites entering the season.

From the tOSU Tennis site, an update on some newer names in the Buckeye lineup competing on the summer USTA circuit.

Rising junior Devin McCarthy completed action at the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships Tuesday at the Varsity Courts on the Indiana University campus. McCarthy dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision in the quarterfinals to Thomas Richter, who is a 2008 Indiana graduate.
. . .
Peter Kobelt and Wyatt Lippert also competed in the event. The rising sophomores both had their tournaments end in the third round.

Actually McCarthy has 3 years of eligibility left, redshirt sophomore.
