Tucker lost his first two matches against the Wolverines and has claimed 15 straight victories since
Ohio State freshman tennis player Dino Marcan grew up in Croatia knowing nothing about the Buckeyes' rivalry with a certain school up north.
He was informed of the disdain for Michigan during his recruitment last fall.
Yesterday, Marcan was able to put his stamp on the Buckeyes' rivalry with the Wolverines by clinching Ohio State's second-round NCAA Tournament victory at the Stickney Tennis Center.
Marcan beat Mike Sroczynski 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 at No.3 singles to give Ohio State a 4-1 victory, sending the Buckeyes to the round of 16, held at the University of Georgia this weekend.
Ohio State's depth carried the day. Balazs Novak at No.4 and Matt Allare at No.5 won straight-set victories after the Buckeyes earned the doubles point with victories by Allare/Shuhei Uzawa and Novak/Justin Kronauge.
No. 4 Ohio State has beaten No. 26 Michigan 15 straight times, but this win didn't come easily. Uzawa lost in three sets at No. 6. No. 1 singles player Chase Buchanan was tied in the third set with Jason Jung, and Kronauge trailed 6-7, 4-5 at No. 2 when Marcan clinched.
"Michigan always plays us tough," OSU coach Ty Tucker said. "The past couple years, we always get stuck with them (in the draw), and it's always been our toughest match. (UM coach) Bruce Berque has those guys ready to play. They love the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, and it was a battle out there."
Marcan has played juniors tennis around the world, but nothing has quite prepared him for the atmosphere at college matches. Forget silence during points.
"You cannot experience that anywhere but in college tennis," Marcan said, "that people are actually yelling during the point."
It was even louder than normal, considering the opponent and the stakes. "Let's go Blue!" chants from Wolverines fans were answered by "Let's go Bucks!" chants from Ohio State fans.
Marcan won four straight games to take a 5-4 lead in the first set and had a 30-love lead, but he faltered and then lost the tie-breaker 7-5.
"Most guys would have hung their head," Tucker said. "But he jumped ahead 4-0 in the second set and gave us some momentum."
Marcan lost only three games the rest of the way against Sroczynski, who at 6feet 6 and 220 pounds wouldn't look out of place on Michigan's football roster.
"I had few unforced errors in the second and third sets," Marcan said.
Marcan has been ranked as high as No. 24 in juniors and had his choice of colleges. He said he picked Ohio State because of Tucker, but Marcan slumped in March and April while adjusting to the program's intensity.
"It's a tough adjustment," Tucker said. "The guy comes from halfway around the world. He gets here, and he's got me on him. It's very tough. But he's done well."
The Buckeyes will need Marcan if they're to make another deep NCAA run in Athens, Ga. Ohio State lost in the national championships to Southern California last year.
"He has to win, in my mind, for us to make it deep in the tournament," Buchanan said. "It's hard to win at Nos. 1 and 2. It's hard for me and Justin to win every match up there because we're playing the top 20 guys in the country when you're playing at 1 and 2."
Ohio State plays Wisconsin in the next round. The Buckeyes have beaten the Badgers twice this season, winning 4-3 in the regular season and 4-0 in the Big Ten semifinals.
