On familiar courts at Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio, the No. 4-seed Ohio State men's tennis team downed Western Michigan, 4-0, Saturday in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Team Championship. Serving as host of the opening rounds of the NCAA championships, the Buckeyes extended their home win streak to 109 matches and will face No. 26 Michigan at noon Sunday in the second round. Earlier in the day, the 26th-ranked Wolverines beat No. 36 Denver, 4-1.
Sophomore Devin McCarthy received the starting nod at No. 6 singles against the Broncos and posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-0 victory over Brad Noel to wrap up the Buckeye victory. McCarthy, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, earned his first NCAA championship singles win and now owns a 13-0 dual-match record that is backed by a nine-match win streak.
For the 30th time this season, the Scarlet and Gray won the doubles point and did so in impressive fashion. The Nos. 1 and 3 Buckeye tandems only gave up five games. Included among the wins was an 8-1 triumph by senior co-captain Justin Kronauge and junior Balazs Novak over Pablo Olivarez and Noel at No. 3. Junior Matt Allare is not one to spend a lot of unnecessary time on the courts and his speedy game propelled the Buckeyes to a 2-0 lead following his 6-1, 6-3 win against Zeyad Montasser on court five. A native of Mason, Ohio, Allare improves to 24-5 overall and 7-1 at No. 5 singles.
Balazs Novak relinquished only two games in his 6-2, 6-0 win vs. Simon Blomberg at No. 4 singles. Riding a 16-match win streak, Novak is 35-6 overall, including a 16-1 ledger on court four.
