Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

not exactly osu tennis related, but could be...anyone hear about this???

Skier Bode Miller to vie for U.S. Open qualifying spot - ESPN

The U.S. Tennis Association will try to create reality-show suspense and buzz by launching a national playoff that could lead to a spot in the U.S. Open main draw.....

Here's how it works: Players can register for a $125 fee if they are USTA members 14 years of age and over (U.S. citizenship is not required). The qualifying tournament will begin with competitions in 16 of the 17 USTA sections -- all but the Caribbean -- from April through June. The men's and women's draws will be cut off at 256 players apiece and will be unseeded -- a nationwide grab bag, so to speak.

"While professionals are eligible to play, we expect the draws to be filled with top junior players, collegians, teaching professionals and even recreational players who will now have a chance to play themselves into the U.S. Open for the first time," said Jim Curley, chief professional tournaments officer and U.S. Open tournament director.

The male and female winners of each section will then play in a 16-draw national playoff to coincide with the summer hardcourt U.S. Open Series of ATP and WTA events, and the winners of that tournament will receive slots in the regular U.S. Open qualifying event.
If the draws fill up at the sectional level, the tournament could include as many as 8,000 participants and a player would have to win up to 15 matches to qualify for the U.S. Open main draw.

Entry information and a schedule of U.S. Open National Playoffs Sectional Qualifying Tournaments are available online at 2010 US Open Official Site - Homepage. Registration begins Feb. 1.

Congratulations Justin, Big 10, Athlete of the Week!

OSU Tennis Site
Justin Kronauge, a senior captain on the No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. It is Kronauge's fourth-career conference weekly honor and it is the second time this season a Buckeye has been recognized. Freshman Dino Marcan earned athlete of the week honors Jan. 19.
Kronauge, a native of Centerville, Ohio, posted a 4-0 record Jan. 30-31 as Ohio State was one of 15 schools to serve as hosts of the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
With the help of Kronauge, the Buckeyes advanced to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship for the fourth-consecutive season. The event will take place Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.
In wins over No. 51 New Mexico in the first matchup and No. 35 Tulsa in the championship advancement match, Kronauge played at No. 1 singles and paired with Chase Buchanan at No. 1 doubles. Against the Lobos, Kronauge won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, after earning an 8-7 win in doubles. Against the Golden Hurricane, Kronauge won 8-2 in doubles and again won in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, as the Buckeyes finished the weekend with a pair of 7-0 victories.

Actually Justin played number 2 singles vs. New Mexico and Tulsa, Chase Buchanan was the winner at #1 in both matches.
Nevertheless B10AOW is an award well deserved for the senior captain.

The Buckeye men's tennis program looks to continue its home streak dominance against Pepperdine and North Carolina this weekend.
In the newest ITA rankings, (Feb. 4), Pepperdine is now the #13 ranked team and North Carolina rose to #22. The OSU article reflects their rankings from January, but they are both rising in the polls and will battle to knock off the big dog in Columbus this weekend!
Congratulations for his all time win totals go out to Senior Justin Kronauge who now stands third in total victories in tOSU history of men's tennis.
The co-captain trails only the seniors from last year's NCAA runner up team--Brian Koniecko and Steven Moneke.

The OSU official site announced that the Buckeye tennis team presenlty owns the longest home winning streak in the Big Ten for all sports--93!
Trivia or research gurus--Greenies for the name of the school who owns the all time NCAA record for home winning streak for any sport!
Some of us would love to see the Buckeye tennis program establish a new all-time NCAA record, but are wondering what that existing mark might be.

The No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team continues its home schedule, welcoming No. 17 Pepperdine at 5 p.m. Friday and No. 28 North Carolina noon Sunday at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.

En route to the team's perfect start so far, Ohio State is a combined 36-1 in singles and doubles. At home, the Buckeyes have defeated Butler, Xavier, No. 51 New Mexico and No. 35 Tulsa.

Ohio State extended its home winning streak to 93-consecutive victories after downing No. 51 New Mexico and No. 35 Tulsa during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Columbus Jan. 30-31. No other Big Ten team in any sport has won as many consecutive games at home than the Buckeyes. The Scarlet and Gray won its 16 home competitions last season, marking the sixth-consecutive year the Buckeyes won all their home matches. The home winning streak dates back to the 2003 season, starting with a 5-2 victory over Purdue April 6.
Led by 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes have won a school-record 90-consecutive regular-season (non-tournament) matches dating back to the 2006 season. Ohio State lost, 5-2, against Notre Dame Feb. 26, 2006 in South Bend.

In doubles, Kronauge became the sixth Buckeye in program history to hit the 100-win mark.
He is also just the third Buckeye in OSU history to have at least 100 singles wins and 100 doubles wins. Former Buckeyes Bryan Koniecko and Steven Moneke are the other two student-athletes to accomplish the feat.
Kronauge is currently third on the all-time combined career wins list with 218 victories. Koniecko and Moneke are first and second, respectively, with 254 and 247 victories.

The Buckeyes claimed its fourth-consecutive invitation to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships last weekend. . .

Earlier today the draw for next weekend's invitational was released. The OSU team was awarded the #3 seed at the ITA National Indoor Tournament at Virginia and will face #13 Louisville in the first round on Friday morning.

I am still looking for some help in finding the NCAA record for all time home win streak by any D1 sport. :oh:

Does that include women's sports, or do you just want mens?

Both, actually.
The info about the OSU tennis home win streak indicates they hold the Big 10 record for "all" sports.

Wanted to know how close the 94 consecutive wins are to becoming not just a B10 record but NCAA as well.

BB73 suggested a google search, and I tried key words "consecutive NCAA home win streak sports" in various combinations.
Some of the more notable finds:
As ScriptOhio noted 129 home wins for Kentucky-- (that looks like the winner)!
Women's VB home win streak was 90 games set by Nebraska this year.
Women's Basketball was 67.
Men's Soccer was 39 held by Tulsa.
Football current home win streak record is 44 held by Boise State, but Miami holds the all time record at 58.
I am having trouble finding other Div. 1 sports records like wrestling, swimming, track, golf, cross country, lacrosse, hockey, etc.

BTW, the all time NCAA Men's tennis winning streak (home and away) is 137 dual match victories from 1957-64 (before the days of the NCAA tennis tournament).
In addition to the 94 how win streak, Ohio State has now won an impressive 91 straight non tournament matches.:osu:

It really isn't an "official D1 sport"; however, my guess is the Ohio State women's synchronized swimming team has to have had very high number of consecutive "home pool" wins:

The Ohio State University's Women's Synchronized Swimming Team is one of the premier teams in college synchronized swimming. Since synchronized swimming became an official National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) sport in 1977, the Buckeyes have won twenty-four championships. The only other teams to win multiple championships are the University of Arizona and Stanford University. In the sports twenty-nine year history, the Buckeyes have failed to win the national championship on just five occasions. More than eighty separate Buckeye women have been named All-Americans during the team's history. For the first eighteen years of the Ohio State team's existence Mary Jo Ruggieri served as the coach. In 1996, Linda Lichter-Witter assumed control of the team.
While synchronized swimming did not become an official NCAA sport until 1997, Ohio State has had a synchronized swimming tradition since the 1920s. At first, the team put on shows for the local community, but by the 1950s and 1960s, it began competing against other schools in club events.

Looking at the home pre-Big Ten schedule, there are some highly ranked and predictably strong teams coming to Columbus including:
Pepperdine 2/5, North Carolina 2/7, Kentucky 2/21 and Texas A&M on 3/7
These big 4 will present a strong challenge to keep the 87 match OSU home win streak alive.
To keep the 52 match Big Ten winning streak alive we will obviously need to be victorious over everyone, but it is nice to see that we have Illinois and TSUN at home this year.

This weekend was the first two of four critical tests to the home win streak.
Pepperdine came in at #13 in the ITA rankings and were defeated 6-1.
North Carolina #22 traveled to Columbus and were dispatched 6-1.
Both were hard fought, evenly matched contests in which the Buckeyes willed themselves to victory.
This is a pretty special program and worthy of all the honors and recognition that this winning streak is bringing to the OSU campus and community.:osu:

Sorry. A little late to the party. I was surprised to see that Chase was playing #1 singles and #1 doubles. I assume that is because he has really stepped up his game over the past six months or so or is Coach Tucker playing to the weaknesses of the other teams. I thought our new recruit Marcan would be playing #1 singles with his experience.

I really can't really seeing as losing at home this season with all the depth and talent that we have.
