Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Yea, he was planning on staying for all 4 years at Ole Miss, but since he won the NCAA champions his freshman year, he decided to turn pro...be interesting to see if that hurts him or not....

I think this is one of the problems with tennis...kids don't want to play much college tennis and get an education nowadays because careers can be short in the tennis world (most retire around what? 29-32?), so if they stay 4 years, they'll be 22 before they get out of college.

Chase Buchanan might disagree with you but I guess we shall see:)

in your advanced scouting who will we play at home next season that might jeopardize our winning tradition:) Thanks.

Sorry to leave you hanging, Litl. The team schedule can be found Here.

Looking at the home pre-Big Ten schedule, there are some highly ranked and predictably strong teams coming to Columbus including:
Pepperdine 2/5, North Carolina 2/7, Kentucky 2/21 and Texas A&M on 3/7
These big 4 will present a strong challenge to keep the 87 match OSU home win streak alive.
To keep the 52 match Big Ten winning streak alive we will obviously need to be victorious over everyone, but it is nice to see that we have Illinois and TSUN at home this year.

Buckeyes find their next star recruits in Croatia & Wisconsin.
From the official site (no mention of Worthington player Kevin Matka).
OSU Tennis

Ty Tucker, head coach of the Ohio State men's tennis team, announced Dino Marcan and Nelson Vick will join the Buckeyes in 2010-11 after signing a Big Ten Tender last week. Marcan, a native of Rijeka, Croatia, is a right-hander, who took up the game at the age of 4.

"Dino is one of the most talented junior players in the world," Tucker, the 2009 ITA National Coach of the Year, said. "He won a grand slam junior title at the French Open this past May. Dino has a chance to be great, but he understands it will take hard work and he wants to do it."

Marcan's current combined junior ranking is 36th in the world and he peaked as high as 24th to start the year. For his career, he has a singles record of 68-46 and a doubles ledger of 73-42. . .
Vick, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., is a right-hander who is currently the top-rank recruit from his home state of the Boys' Class of 2010 on tennisrecruiting.net.

"We are excited about Nelson coming to Ohio State," Tucker said. "He is one of the best juniors in the U.S. and a great young man. He has the right work ethic and his uncle has trained him well."

NCAA 2010 ITA rankings place tOSU third nationally

Official Site

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After advancing to its first NCAA final in program history, the Ohio State men's tennis team returns for the 2010 campaign No. 3 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings it was announced Tuesday.

Guided by 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes have now been ranked in the Top 25 in the ITA rankings for 10-consecutive years. The three years prior to the 2009-2010 season, Ohio State has earned a preseason ranking of No. 3 or higher and finished third behind Georgia and Virginia in 2007 and '08. In 2009, the Buckeyes received a No. 1 preseason ranking, the first in program history, and finished second as national runners-up.

In singles, Ohio State has three members ranked in the Top 125. Junior Shuhei Uzawa, a native of Chiba, Japan, is No. 34, while sophomore Steven Williams is No. 88. Sophomore Chase Buchanan rounds out the Buckeyes at No. 103 in the singles polls.

Ohio State begins the 2010 dual season, hosting Butler and Xavier in a doubleheader home opener at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.

The Buckeyes are also scheduled for a USTA futures tournament in Plantation, Florida, this weekend, and the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue next weekend.

It is somewhat surprising that Justin Kronauge (13th in Sept. '09), Matt Allare (77th), and Bakazs Novak (45th) were not ranked by the ITA in the January single's release after being ranked in the Fall. It may be they did not have enough matches to qualify under the new computerized formulas.

On another exciting note, Dino Marcan is listed on the 2010 team roster. This is a huge addition to the Buckeye lineup! The rich get richer.
Marcan was ranked around 1000 in the world on the professional tour (satellite and futures events). I realize this may not appear significant but 1000 on the world professional tour will dominate at most NCAA level events.
I was concerned that tOSU had lost the strength of its national runner up team in 2009 (Moneke and Koniecko), but I am convinced Marcan could step in and play the #1 single's position for the Buckeyes very successfully.
Marcan is also a strong double's player. He won the French Open Juniors event with his partner last Summer.
With the addition of Marcan and the improvement of Buchanan, the return of Kronauge, Allare, Novak, and Shuhei, it will be most interesting to see how the team lineup will look beginning the 2010 season.
BPers this is going to be a very fun year!

Two Buckeyes competed in the USTA Futures event at Plantation, Florida, last weekend.
Tournament site

Dino Marcan, the newest member of the team won a first round qualifier and then ran into C. I. Gard, the #1 seed in the qualifier and dropped his 2nd round match.
Chase Buchanan also received a wildcard entry and defeated a more highly rated competitor in the 1st round of the qualifier.
In the 2nd round, Chase dropped a tough match to C. A. Porumb ending his tournament play.
The Boilermaker Invitational (1/16) though listed on the tOSU team schedule will not be an event in which the Buckeyes participate.

I guess in looking at your two posts above means that all of the freshman will most likely be redshirted this year. Also, with regards to Marcan how could he play on the professional tour and still remain eligible to play under NCAA guidelines.

It should be interesting to see how the lineup looks as the season progresses, whether some of the Frosh will step up and challenge for a single's or double's spot.
Re. the question of eligibility of Marcan, the USTA has an extensive description of how a player forfeits their amateur status. This may parallel the NCAA policy or it might be different.
In short acc. to the USTA, amateurs may play pro events as long as prize money received does not exceed $250. If you have a lot of time or need a guaranteed cure for insomnia. . . .
The USTA lists the rules for amateur status on this website.

Williams had a successful fall and finished with a 6-3 record, going 1-1 vs. nationally ranked opponents. . .
Marcan, a native of Rijeka, Croatia, will make his Buckeye debut at the invitational this weekend. Marcan, who took up the game at the age of 4, peaked as high as 24th in the world in the combined junior rankings at the beginning of last year. . .

Sure glad to see some Buckeyes are competing in the Invite--especially interested to see how Marcan fares. I think Ty would love to see Marcan's game at a level to play at the top of the lineup. If so our depth much like last season would be just devastating to opponents.
