Matt Allare seeded 28 defeated Hogan of Arkansas 7-5, 6-3 in the 1st round of the qualifying tourney.
Shuhei Uzawa seeded 13 defeated Juan Gomez of San Diego in 3 sets.
Devin McCarthy gave a strong effort against Kecki of USC but dropped a tough 3 setter.
Allare caught a break when the #1 seed in his section went down today.
Shuhei's section still has the #2 seed alive.
The top 16 of 128 will qualify for the D'Nova ITA main draw of 64,
i.e. Allare and Shuhei will have to win 3 more matches to join teammates Kronauge, Novak and Buchanan in the championship draw.

Shuhei Uzawa advanced to the 3rd round of the qualifying for the D'Nova ITA men's tennis tournament at Tulsa today.
He defeated Bradley Cox of Kentucky in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
Matt Allare did not fair as well in the 2nd round.
He dropped a straight set match to Alex Stamchev of Auburn 6-3, 7-6.
Good luck to Shuhei tomorrow!
The competition at the pre qualifiers and qualifying rounds is strong.
It demonstrates the great advantage of receiving an invitation into the championsip draw of 64 ala Justin Kronauge, Balazs Novak, and Chase Buchanan earned.
Represent the Buckeyes well men! :osu:

This weekend the Buckeye men are playing at the ITA midwest regional in TSUN. The event has been won the past 3 years by a Buckeye singles player. In 2006 by Steven Moneke, 2007 by Justin Kronauge, and last year by Brian Koniecko. We would love to see this string continue.

Looks like we didn't fare too well in the quarterfinals but I will refer to Mr. Tennis:) for his analysis.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's tennis team finished competition Sunday at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. On the fourth day of the tournament, sophomore Chase Buchanan was the last Buckeye remaining in the singles main draw, but lost his quarterfinal match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to No. 4-seed Jason Jung of Michigan.

In doubles, the second-seeded duo of Buchanan and Justin Kronauge advanced to the semifinals of the doubles main draw before losing, 9-7, to Jung and George Navas, the third seed from Michigan. The Buckeye pair won three-consecutive matches with wins against No.14-seed Ben Hartman and Bartosz Jozwiak of DePaul (8-2) and Alex Latosinsky and Pjotrs Necajevs of Detroit Mercy (8-6) in the third round and quarterfinals, respectively. The tandem earned their first win of the tournament against Michael Hobson and Skip Span of Illinois State, 8-1, in the second round.

No. 4-seed Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa lost to Illinois No. 5-seed Marek Czerwinski and Dennis Nevolo in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (6) in the second Buckeye quarterfinal match.

Junior Balazs Novak and sophomore Steven Williams advanced to the third round of the tournament, but dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 7-seed Chris Madden and Mike Sroczynski of Michigan.

Next for the Buckeyes on the 2009 fall schedule is the Big Ten Indoors singles event Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in East Lansing, Mich.

You are right LItl, we did not play well in the 16's, dropping 5 0f 6, only Chase won..
It was disappointing, had some hopes for somebody to excel at AA but alas Kronauge lost in 3 sets to the #9 seed, and eventual champ from ND. Allare dropped a tough 3 setter and the others ran into some hot players.
Buchanan must have not played well, but Jung from TSUN is just a strong player.
Doubles teams played fairly well, they lost some tough close matches, Kronage/Buchanan 9-7 in the semis, Allare/Uawa 9-8 in the quarters.
Next up is the B10 indoors this weekend.
Trying to reducests because I want to save my 1000 for the tOSU victory over TSUN. :wink2:

There has not been much publicity this year re. incoming recruits.
Last year was an outstanding and highly publicized recruiting year for men's tennis (#2 class in the nation) with the #1 prospect Chase Buchanan, along with 5 star recruits Wyatt Lippert, Peter Kobelt, and Devin McCarthy, (Buchanan and McCarthy arriving early for the spring season).
This year the team will graduate Justin Kronauge and Mike O'Connell.
The scholarship quota for men's tennis is 4 1/2 full rides.
For a team that carries 10 on its roster, that usually requires the ships to be dispersed by fractions among the team members.
Next year the Buckeyes incoming class will feature a commit from 5* Blue Chip senior, Nelson Vick, 6'3" from Grafton, Wisconsin.
He is the #24 ranked recruit in the nation, #5 in the Great Lakes region, and #1 in the state of Wisconsin. Vick chose tOSU over offers from Duke, Virginia, Georgia, UCLA, Stanford, Illinois, Pepperdine, and Wisconsin.
It may require a registration but you can view Vick's bio and record here.
Love to see Ty's skill at not only developing tennis talent on the court, but also in the homes and families of recruits.

Hey, does anybody know if any of the OSU tennis players (current or just graduated) play on the tour often (besides chase getting that wild card)...I was just wondering because the tennis club I play at in Florida is hosting a professional futures tournament (and i think it can be anyone as high ranked as 150 in the world) and was just curious if there was a chance any osu players might be in it.

Good question about Buckeyes on the pro circuit.

The media guide has two pages of information about Buckeyes who have played professionally.
The present material is a bit dated but lists B. J. Munroe with some recent success on the futures circuit and also Jeremy Wurtzman (now the OSU assistant coach).
OSU tennis media guide turn to page 6-7.

Two 2009 tOSU graduates are trying the professional tour; Steven Moneke and Bryan Koniecko.

Moneke played in a futures circuit in Germany this summer. He had a 7-5 record with most matches played on clay.
His profile may be found here.

Bryan Koniecko has also been playing some futures tournaments and qualifiers on the pro circuit. His record is not as strong.
Profile for Bryan can be found here.

Kobelt's father was the high school champion of Wisconsin when they live there--interesting.

I would assume with the lack of scholarships and then maybe Ty looks for good students so they can be helped out with academic scholarships. Don't know if that is true or not.

sweet, just found out that someone that used to play for Ohio St is going to be in the professional tournament here...Chris Klingemann? I think that's the correct name? Someone said he graduated in 2007? Is that correct, and does anybody know how well he did while at OSU?

The OSU tennis team was represented well by sophomore Steven Williams at the B10 indoor tourney at East Lansing this past weekend.
Marek Czerwinski is a strong player as his #1 seed in the tournament would indicate.
Williams is competing well this Fall and will likely be a candidate for one of the two vacated singles positions (Koniecko and Moneke) on the squad for 2010 winter and spring.

OSU Tennis site

Steven Williams, a sophomore on the Ohio State men's tennis team, was a winner of three-consecutive straight set wins, which included a victory over the No. 1 seed, before falling in the quarterfinals in the 2009 Big Ten Singles Championship Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Williams entered the 64-player field as the 14th seed and encountered No. 1 Marek Czerwinski of Illinois in the round of 16. The Buckeye from Manlius, N.Y., surprised Czerwinski with a 6-4, 6-4 victory to move on to a matchup against sixth-seed Chris Madden of Michigan. It was Madden who tripped up Williams, handing him a 6-4, 6-3 loss. . .
The fall season continues for the Buckeyes with the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 5-8 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The national indoors will be the final fall event for Ohio State before it opens its spring season Jan. 20 against Butler and Xavier at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
