Huge, clutch win for Metka and the bucks!

Mr Clutch....

Despite entering the NCAA tournament as the three seed, the Ohio State men's tennis team was staring down an early exit at the hands of No. 14 Florida late Friday night at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

With the score tied 3-3 and Kevin Metka down 4-1 in the third set, the redshirt junior rallied for a 10-8 tiebreaker victory over Florida's Mike Alford to clinch a 4-3 win for the Buckeyes and extend the school's streak of reaching the NCAA quarterfinals to nine years.

“He [Metka] misses a first serve, he says ‘Go Bucks’, he makes an error, he says ‘Go Bucks’, he wins a point he says, ‘Go Bucks',” head coach Ty Tucker said. “The guy loves to play tennis. He puts his heart and soul into it and never gets down on himself and keeps fighting.”

Metka, a second team All-Big Ten selection this season, was pumped after the thrilling 6-3, 5-7, 5-6(8) win, which ended after midnight, saying, “It's the best match I've ever won.”

While Metka got the winner, Ohio State also needed ace Peter Kobelt – roommate of Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman – to deliver after falling in a 3-2 hole against the Gators. As he's done all season, Kobelt delivered, topping No. 51 Florent Diep 6-4, 7-6(3), setting up Metka for the heroics.

I wish I could break the habit/OCD of:

- Not moving a muscle when OSU has things rolling in events & coming back from a deficit (didn't move when Metka broke back in the third and kept fighting into the TB).

It's worse for basketball if OSU is coming back or football (like Northwestern 2013). Have to try not to piss.

Great fight back.

Quotes from UGA's website:

Ohio State Head Coach Ty Tucker On tonight’s match...
"I had to laugh to keep from crying [during the tiebreak]. I wasn't sure if we deserved to win, but we had the right horse on the table at the end with Metka. We were lucky to come through because we squandered a couple opportunities. But Coach Shelton's done an unbelievable job and has guys fighting hard. Usually we are fighting. We feel we're pretty good fighters, but we were matched today. Those guys fought hard. But for the last match, we had who we wanted out there."

Ohio State Junior Kevin Metka On tonight’s match…

“Incredible feeling. That’s the best match I ever won. I had a good first set and then the second set he broke me early. The third set I was down the whole match and I was down 4-1 and I brought it back to four all. It’s just incredible to come back like that. It feels really good.”

On how he recovers from the match…

“We’ve got to get ready for a match Sunday. Right now I’m just really happy for my teammates for cheering me on. They’re a really good group of guys and I love them. I think we’ll just use that extra day tomorrow for an advantage to rest for our match on Sunday afternoon. I think we’re all looking forward to giving them a run.”

Florida Head Coach Bryan Shelton On tonight’s match…

"Ohio State played great. They battled until the end and they deserved it. We fought as hard as we possibly could. I'm proud of our guys. It was a heck of a season and a great match tonight. We were one point short but I'm glad Mike Alford was the guy out there at the end of the day. He's clinched so many big matches for us but it just wasn't to be tonight. We gave it a hell of a fight."

Weather in gawja caused matches to be moved indoors, USC vs Texas to a 4 court facility, and the other an hour and a half away at ga tech. The weather may delay the start of OSU vs. Ucla quarterfinal showdown.
Most NCAA tennis followers predict that Ucla despite a no 6 seed is the strongest team in the field.
They are loaded at #1,2,3,4. May have some vulnerabilities at 5,6, but not much.
Gracelhink speculates that the chance for an OSU "upset" will require a must have dubs point and wins at any 3 of #1,3,5,6.
Will see if tucker can find some more magic this season.

I think today is the day we need Kobelt to step up and be the big time clutch #1 we know him as - he's going to have his hands full with Giron but that's going to be a big momentum match IMO.

It's also often said but none more so than true and I agree with @gracelhink - have, have, have to win the doubles point. No if's, and's, or but's.

**Edit: I see Clay Thompson plays as UCLA's #1 singles and Giron is #2. Wow, did not know these were the rankings for UCLA's singles....

Thompson #1
Giron #2
McDonald #35
Brymer #71
Puget (unranked)
Sell #95

Good catch on the rankings!
They are absolutely loaded!
Even puget should be ranked top 50 in ITA but missed time this season!
