http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten...team-coasts-in-ncaa-second-round.html?sid=101Ohio State's 4-0 win over Notre Dame yesterday in the second round of the NCAA men's tennis tournament appeared to be business as usual. The win put the Buckeyes in the round of 16 for a sixth consecutive season.
But for freshman Blaz Rola, it was not an ordinary victory. He sensed it Friday when Ohio State beat Ball State 4-0, and noticed it again yesterday.
"You see a lot more people coming through (for the NCAA Tournament)," he said. "There's more excitement and a lot more pressure on our players. ... There is definitely more at stake."
Rola, the fourth-ranked player in the nation, didn't leave anything to chance. His emotion was visible as he teamed with senior Balazs Novak to win in doubles, and later defeated Casey Watt 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
His singles win, along with victories by Novak and senior Matt Allare, allowed the Buckeyes to win their 17th consecutive match and 128th consecutive home match. Fourth-seeded Ohio State (32-2) will next play unranked Tulsa on Thursday on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, Calif.
"The guys obviously did a good job," Buckeyes coach Ty Tucker said. "They take everybody serious and know that anybody can beat you in the second round. ... They knew Notre Dame was very dangerous."
Rain delayed the start of play yesterday, and more rain forced the match to be moved after the doubles portion from the Stickney Tennis Center to the indoor Varsity Tennis Center. None of that mattered.
"There was so much at stake that it was pretty easy to keep focused," Tucker said. "It was an easy transition (indoors), and we were able to handle business."
Rola made sure of that. He displayed all aspects of his game in easily defeating Watt.
"I didn't make a lot of errors," Rola said. "I served pretty well. (Watt) breaks down pretty quickly, and that's what happened (yesterday)."
Ohio State knows it might not be so easy on Thursday. The Buckeyes have not practiced outdoors much because of the wet spring, so adjusting to the California climate will be a big challenge in the coming days.
"I'm sure we'll be playing a lot of outdoor tennis for the next two or three days," Allare said. "Once we get out there, we'll be hitting the practice courts quite a bit. Then hopefully we can make a run."
Five Ohio State teams "baseball, football, men's gymnastics, men's tennis and women's tennis" have been honored with public recognition awards, the NCAA announced Tuesday. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the Top 10 percent in each sport, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).
After hosting the first and second rounds, the fourth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team (32-2, 13-0 Big Ten) will continue postseason play as one of 16 teams at the 2011 Division I Men's Tennis Championship in Stanford, Calif., Thursday. The Buckeyes are the No. 4 overall seed in the tournament and shut out Ball State and Notre Dame in the first two rounds in Columbus to advance to the Round of 16 for the sixth straight season.
Ohio State, which advanced to the 2010 NCAA tournament quarterfinals, will play Tulsa (21-7) next at 6 p.m. ET Thursday.
Ohio State will carry a 17-match win streak to Stanford, marking the eighth time in program history the Buckeyes will compete in the Round of 16 at the NCAA championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010). . . .
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Tulsa is 21-7 overall and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the Conference USA title. The Hurricane defeated East Carolina, Memphis and Rice, all by 4-0 decisions en route to the league title. Tulsa is coming off two big upsets over Big 12 opponents in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. The Hurricane defeated Oklahoma, 4-2, and No. 13 Texas, 4-3, in the first and second rounds, respectively, in Norman, Okla.
Tulsa has played only one Big Ten opponent on the season, defeating Michigan, 4-3, March 11 in Ann Arbor. On neutral courts, the Hurricane are 2-1.
Buckeyes vs. Tulsa
Ohio State and Tulsa have met only once on the courts, with the Buckeyes coming away with the 7-0 victory during the 2009-10 National Team Indoors Qualifier in Columbus. . .

Combined, the four freshmen are 87-18 (.828) in singles competition. In doubles, the freshmen foursome's record is 65-17.

The Mason, Ohio, native is 19-0 at the No. 4 position and 7-1 vs. ranked competition. The senior co-captain's 35 singles wins overall are second on the team, only behind Blaz Rola's team-high 37 victories.
Chase Buchanan enters the NCAA Round of 16 boasting a 15-match win streak. The New Albany, Ohio, native is 27-2. The eight-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week is 16-1 at the No. 1 position and 11-1 when playing at the No. 2 spot. The junior is also 13-5 vs. ranked opponents on the 2010-11 campaign. . . .
