Ohio State men’s volleyball wins 2nd straight national title

The Buckeyes are champions once more.
Ohio State added to its trophy case on Saturday night as the men’s volleyball team defeated BYU in straight sets to take home a second straight national title. The Buckeyes, who were 31-2 heading into the matchup, dispatched the Cougars with relative ease, finishing 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22 in the three sets played.
In front of a home crowd of 8,205 at St. John Arena in Columbus, the Buckeyes survived a ferocious third set onslaught from BYU to lock up the title. The Cougars hung tough for the entirety of the third, at one point closing the gap to 23-21 and forcing a late timeout from coach Pete Hanson.
BYU was on the receiving end of the Buckeyes’ championship win each of the last two years.
Ohio State was led by setter Christie Blough, who previously recorded 31 assists in the semifinal victory over Hawaii. Huge tournament performances from hitters Nicholas Szersen and Maxime Hervoir were also instrumental in the team’s run to the championship.
It’s been an embarrassment of riches in Columbus these last few years, with dominating title performances in everything from football to women’s rowing to men’s volleyball. (Wash the bad taste of the Clemson game out of your mouth; Ohio State is a volleyball school and everyone knows it.) Congrats to the most recent champs to come out of the best damn school in the land.
