With the Big 10 Championship looming and league play in full swing — our Buckeye team is far from mediocrity and is proving to have shining stars.

The stars that I specifically care to mention are: Jo Jo Eramo and Taylor Hurff.

The reason that I am focusing on these two young men is because of their rise on the Big 10 statistic boards.

The Big 10 is a good Rugby League – a powerhouse nationally. Nationally ranked are Indiana, Wisconsin, The Ohio State University and TTUN. No Conference is better. California has 4 ranked teams as well, as does the East and the West.

So with that point made – I can now pursue my point of the progressing Buckeyes and the emerging dominance of two of their players within one of the premier conferences of D1A Rugby.

Jo Jo Eramo is a wing that currently leads the league in tries with 11. In Big 10 play his breakdown pans out as such: in the opener vs. Illinois the win was 52-10 – Jo Jo having 3 tries. The 2nd week of league play vs. Purdue the win was an impressive 78-7 – Jo Jo hammering in 5 tries. And last weekend in the win vs. *ichigan State – a lopsided 77-15 – Jo Jo brought 3 tries past the goal line. He is followed by IU’s Hidalgo who stands at 9.

Jo Jo is second in points with 55. That breakdown is: The opener against Illinois he was good for 15. The following week against Purdue he skyrocketed to 25. And last weekend against the Spartans he put 15 on the board.

Jo Jo is a legitimate star and should be recognized.

Now to our 2nd player:

Taylor Hurff is a Flyhalf/Scrumhalf that is 2nd in the league in conversions with 22. In Big 10 play his breakdown looks like this: In the opening victory against Illinois 52-10 Taylor was good for 6 conversions. The next weekend in the pounding delivered to Purdue – 78-7 Taylor impressively delivered 9. And this past weekend against *ichigan State in the 77-15 victory he gave the Buckeyes 7.

Taylor is third in points with 47. That breakdown reads: In the opening of Big 10 play against Illinois Taylor put 12 on the board. In the following weekend’s thrashing of the Boilermakers Taylor shot that number up to 18. And last weekend against the Spartans he put 17 up.

Taylor too is a legitimate star and should also be given due credit.

So, often as fans we are swapped in the statistic game. How many touchdowns? How many baskets? Homeruns? But as a School that has an escalating team in a sport that is generally new in America, an International sport enjoyed immensely by “the rest of the world”, we should take note and give the support this team deserves. For they are pushing forward that wondrous Scarlet & Gray tradition we are accustomed to – and that is winning – and doing so in honor and with a sportsmanship most Schools are – bluntly put – envious of.

This team consists of a group of players that is stepping up and winning – and doing so with an impressive notice. Jo Jo & Taylor are leaders in league play with numbers that stand out – deserving stars. But just as Ezekiel and Mike Thomas deliver in the media’s darling game up the road a bit we know they cannot do so without the rest of the team. It’s the same here. Jo Jo and Taylor certainly are grateful to: Scott Freitag, Ronan Forrestal, Jack Walsh, Mike Matthews, Matt Mahoney, Ryan Skelly, Jack Bengel, Luke Fay, Ian Hildebrandt, Santino Cua, Kevin Fessenmeyer, Brandon Heidinger, Matthew White, Cody Sheets, Nathan Grose, Nick Mihalitsas, Cory Harmon, & Chris Foster. All the others whom I may have missed please forgive me.

This team is good and is getting better. They are BUCKEYE GOOD. Time to take notice Buckeye Nation. Time to witness a Big 10 Title in the making. Don’t be shy – stop by and witness Rugby the Buckeye way – a showing hunger that delivers.
