The Buckeyes Men’s Rugby Team remains undefeated in Big 10 play with an impressive victory against MSU.

This past Saturday, Oct. 10th, @ Fred Beekman Park – 6 p.m. was a witnessing to a “really” good team improving to a “phenomenal” one. And what is meant in that declaration is the simplicity that sometimes surfaces when the temptation of yielding in a commanding victory creeps up – NOT the case here. This team understood an opportunity was at hand for chasing the perfect game. In such a rare moment – openings are conceived that whisper of the gift to prosper and improve.

And our Buckeye’s took full advantage.

“The goal is not to be better than the other man, but to be better than your previous self.”

This nice motivational quote (an old Hindu proverb) was implemented in the pregame pep talk by one of the Team’s Coaches – Wes Campbell.

In that spirit the Buckeyes played perhaps their most complete game from start to finish so far this season.

The greatest news from the start was the return of Captain Santino Cua back at 8-man. He was a great lift for the team. To see him healthy too was a great motivational tool.

First Half

5 minutes in – Inside Center Ryan Skelly had a huge hit in the midfield which leads to a turnover. Flyhalf Ian Hildebrandt spins it wide to Wing Jo Jo Eramo who marches it down to the goal line. Hooker Luke Fay brings it in for the try. Kick by Scrum half Taylor Hurff is no good. The Buckeyes lead 5-0.

11 minutes – MSU is penalized for playing the ball on the ground. Taylor Hurff’s kick for points is good. The Buckeyes are now leading 8-0.
Flanker Cory Harmon would walk in for a try after crashing tight off a ruck on a scissors with Taylor Hurff. The kick is good. And the Buckeyes lead begins its journey to total control of the game: 15-0.

The First Half would end with MSU’s 2nd try off a Buckeyes mistake: Buckeyes lead is 32-10.

Second Half

Wing Jack Walsh steals the opening kick from MSU. The Buckeyes run several phrases down to the goal. Prop Kyle O’Donnell dives over for the try. The kick is good and the Buckeyes increase their lead: 39-10.
One of the most impressive tries of the game comes from 31 minutes in. The Buckeyes scrum at their own 40. Ian Hildebrandt fakes a couple of crashes and plays it wide to Jo Jo Eramo. Jo Jo fakes a scissors before stepping inside and drags three defenders the last 10 meters. The kick is good. The Buckeyes are leading at this point 72-10.

The final try of the game is made by Outside Center Mike Matthews which makes it 77-10 as the kick is conceded.

The Buckeyes win impressively.

The 17th The Buckeyes travel to Iowa City to meet up with the Iowa Hawkeyes. All games in Big 10 play are essential. No team is to be taken lightly. The Iowa game though should pan out equally to this one versus MSU. The opportunity for improvement is never to be avoided. Look for the Buckeyes to capitalize early and often as they unquestionably are the better of the two.

The season will come down to the last two games of the regular season: Wisconsin @ home before a bye and then heading up North versus TTUN. These two teams will be different stories completely. But never underestimate brewing greatness.

Our Buckeyes are proving to be the “other” Scarlet & Gray team that is marching to a Big 10 Title. Keep an eye out & lodge in the back of your mind what I’ve said.
