The Buckeyes men’s hockey team closes out their regular season schedule against Michigan, while the women’s team hosts St. Thomas in the WCHA first round.

A massive hockey weekend is on tap in Columbus. While most of the attention is on Ohio Stadium and the Stadium Series game on Saturday between the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets, both the Ohio State men’s and women’s hockey teams will be in action ahead of the outdoor game.

The Buckeye men’s team will close out their regular season schedule with home games on Thursday and Friday against rival Michigan. The women’s team will host St. Thomas for at least two games in the first round of the WCHA Tournament, and if each team has a win after Saturday’s game they’ll play on Sunday to break the tie.

Men’s hockey

Since the Ohio State men’s hockey team is hosting their rival, we’ll start with a look at where the Buckeyes stand heading into Thursday and Friday’s games with the Wolverines.

Ohio State is coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of Minnesota, dropping the Buckeyes to 20-10-2 on the season. Even with the two losses to the Golden Gophers, Ohio State has already secured a first round series at home in next week’s Big Ten Tournament since they will finish in the top-three in the conference.

Friday night’s 4-1 loss to Minnesota snapped Ohio State’s four-game winning streak. The Buckeyes actually tied the game late in the first period when Davis Burnside scored, but that would be the only tally they would put on the scoreboard. Minnesota’s Brody Lamb scored two goals in the game, propelling the home team to victory.

Saturday would see the Golden Gophers score the first three goals of the game before Ohio State would respond with goals from Aiden Hansen-Bukata and Max Montes to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Buckeyes wouldn’t be able to tie the game up, as Minnesota secured the 6-3 victory with two empty net goals late in the third period.

Now Ohio State will turn their attention to the Michigan Wolverines, who they split two games earlier in the season with. The first of those games was an outdoor contest at Wrigley Field in early January that saw the Buckeyes stage a memorable comeback in the third period in the 4-3 victory.

After Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Ohio State was able to tie the score up late in the second period after goals from Sam Deckhut and Noah Powell. The Wolverines took the lead back midway through the third period on a power play goal. Riley Thompson responded with a power play goal of his own three minutes later to tie the score, followed by the game-winner with 39 seconds remaining in the game to notch his fourth career two-goal game, and his second in the scarlet and gray.

Two days later the teams met again in Ann Arbor. This time the Buckeyes would open up the scoring, as Gunnerwolfe Fontaine scored a power play goal 7:29 into the game. Hansen-Bukata would extend Ohio State’s lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later. Michigan would cut into the lead when Evan Werner netted a power play goal at the 8:46 mark of the second period, followed by William Whitelaw tying the score 3:15 into the third period.

The Wolverines would earn the victory just 20 seconds into overtime when Jackson Hallum scored the game-winner. T.J. Hughes assisted on all three goals in the Michigan victory, and is the team’s leading scorer entering this weekend’s games, recording 14 goals and 21 assists this season for a total of 35 points.

Michigan enters this weekend coming off a bye weekend following a sweep of Minnesota. The Wolverines won the first game 3-2 in overtime, followed by a shootout win the next night in Ann Arbor. The victories pushed Michigan’s record to 17-12-3 on the season.

While Ohio State won’t be in danger of losing their home-ice advantage for the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, they could possibly move up to second in the standings if they win two games against Michigan and Michigan State drops both their games this weekend against Notre Dame.

In the end, the best way to kick off a huge hockey weekend in Columbus is to grab two wins over Michigan to set the table for the Blue Jackets to do the same to the Red Wings on Saturday night.

Women’s hockey

Last weekend the Ohio State women’s hockey team closed out their regular season schedule with two wins over St. Cloud State in Columbus. The Buckeyes won Friday night’s game 5-3, followed by a 3-2 victory on Saturday, pushing their winning streak to five games.

Ohio State scored the first three goals of Friday’s game when Makenna Webster, Joy Dunne, and Jocelyn Amos all found the back of the net. Then St. Cloud State came storming back, netting the next three goals to tie the game at three. Amos would secure the victory with two goals in the third period, recording her second hat trick of the season.

Saturday’s game played out in a similar way to the previous night’s game, with Dunne and Riley Brengman scoring the first two goals of the game before St. Cloud State would tie the game up with just under five minutes left in the third period. The tie wouldn’t last too long, as Makenna Webster would score the game-winner at the 17:38 mark of the final period, giving the Buckeyes the win on a day when they honored their senior class.

Goaltender Amanda Thiele would stop 14 shots to earn her second victory of the weekend, pushing her record on the season to 16-5-2.

The Buckeyes will enter the first round of the WCHA Tournament as the number two seed, which will see them host St. Thomas. Ohio State swept all four games against the Tommies this season.

Back in early November, the Buckeyes beat St. Thomas 5-1 and 1-0 in overtime in Minnesota. In the first game, Joy Dunne recorded two goals and two assists to pace the Ohio State offense. The following day Emma Peschel’s goal 21 seconds into overtime would be the only score in the game, as Riley MacLeod earned the shutout by not allowing any of the eight shots by the Tommies to find the back of the net.

The Buckeyes would also sweep the return games in Columbus earlier this month, 5-4 on Feb. 7, followed by a 5-1 win the next day.

Ohio State and St. Thomas will square off at 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday at OSU Ice Rink, followed by a 3:00 p.m. ET faceoff on Saturday, just a few hours before the puck is dropped for the game between the Red Wings and Blue Jackets at Ohio Stadium. If the series is tied after Saturday’s game, the Buckeyes and Tommies will play on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET.

The winner of the series will go on to next week’s WCHA Final Faceoff in Duluth, Minnesota.
