The young Bucks on the hardwood have experienced quite a bit already during the early part of schedule.

To this point, the year had been defined by turnovers that made losses to UT-Arlington and Louisiana State ugly.

On Friday night, despite the turnover struggles, Ohio State battled to overtime with another young team — the Memphis Tigers.

At times, they controlled the game. In other moments, the flashed brilliance in the transition game.

For a good amount of the game, they also flashed just how young and inexperienced they are.

Especially in the extra frame, where Thad Matta’s squad went 0-6 from the floor– en route to a 81-76 loss.

Things looked bright for the Buckeyes midway through the second half when they took over with their transition offense and jumped out to an 8-0 to create some separation.

The Tigers followed with an 11-2 run of their own in a spurt where Ohio State turned the ball over five times in six possessions.

Overall, they turned the ball over 19 times on the night.

JaQuan Lyle, Keita Bates-Diop, and Marc Loving were the only Buckeyes in double figures.

Lyle had a career day, scoring 18 points on 8/14 shooting. Matta used him as his primary point guard for most of the night and the freshman showed improvements in running the offense. He had 4 turnovers compared to 8 assists.

Loving saw a lot of time inside the post, and really turned the page since struggling to show consistency a year ago.

He scored 17 on 5/11 shooting and added 7 rebounds in the interior.

In their small ball lineup, Keita Bates-Diop played center for Matta on Friday. He didn’t have the greatest day from the floor but did add three blocks and two steals. He added 10 points on 3/11 shooting.

Austin Grandstaff saw a lot of minutes in the first half and was Ohio State’s top player off the bench. He went 1/5 from beyond the mark but made his first two point attempts of his career.

Memphis freshman Dedric Lawson really impressed as a forward and ball handler for coach Josh Pastner. Lawson had 16 points and 10 rebounds with a great interior presence.

Not greater than fellow forward Shaq Goodwin, who exposed Ohio State’s post up defense nearly every time he touched the ball.

Goodwin went 9-9 from the stripe and 7/10 from the floor. His 23 points were a game-high.

Overall, the Buckeyes shot 46% from the floor and 36% from three.

They’ll take on 12th ranked Virginia at Value City Arena on Tuesday. The Cavaliers are coming off a 80-54 win over Lehigh.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM ET.
