Could Ohio State need to replace another talented coach soon?
When you hire great assistant coaches and enjoy success as a team, others are going to want to hire your assistant coaches. That's part of the game, and Ohio State knows it well, as we've seen with Tom Herman, Everett Withers and others.
With over a dozen open FBS positions now, and others likely to open this week, it seemed likely that at least one Ohio State assistant could be tied to an open position. According to one report, a Buckeye coach is a strong candidate, but maybe not for the job you might think.
Per Football Scoop, Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is a "strong candidate" for the vacant Syracuse head coaching position:
Sources tell FootballScoop that Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is a strong candidate for the head coaching position at Syracuse. Ash has served as co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State the past two seasons, as DC at Arkansas in 2013 and at Wisconsin in 2011 & 2012. We have not heard a timetable for a decision and were told earlier today that other candidates were still in the process.
Ohio State's defense has been nothing short of dominant this season, finishing second in the nation in scoring defense, giving up only 14 points a game, while also being near the top of the charts in many advanced statistical categories. The Buckeyes are also slated to send multiple defensive starters to the NFL Draft this season, in no small part due to their development and performance at Ohio State.
Given his previous experience at Iowa State, some thought Ash could have been a candidate there before the Cyclones quickly went with Toledo head coach Matt Campbell. Other MAC type positions could potentially look toward Ash if Syracuse doesn't work out.
