The Buckeyes are hoping it can overtake the top spot in the race for safety Chris Thompson Jr.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have already compiled an impressive five commitments already in the 2020 recruiting class. The haul has the Buckeyes placed at No. 2 nationally in the 247Sports Class Rankings and in the lead in the Big Ten.

Among the short list of commits in the class is four-star safety commit Lejond Cavazos (Bradenton, FL / IMG Acadamy) and the Buckeyes appear to be keen on adding another safety to go along with Cavazos.

The addition may not become official for some time, as there is still a lot of time before high school seniors in the 2020 class have to sign on the dotted line, however, it looks like the Buckeyes have targeted four-star safety Chris Thompson Jr. (Duncanville, TX / Duncanville)

Ohio State offered Thompson a scholarship to play for the University on May 1, right around the time Thompson’s recruitment started to gain steam. The Buckeyes were one of many schools to offer him in the spring, but they haven’t got lost in the shuffle either.

Thompson spoke with Nick Krueger of Rivals.com regarding his recruitment and where teams were sitting. Ohio State was one of those teams he spoke about and it appears that they could one day lead in his recruitment.

“[Ohio State] also told me they’re looking me as a leader in the 2020 class and they like my physical play,” Thompson said to Krueger in regards of Ohio State. “I have a feeling when we get to September they’ll be one of the teams really trying to take the lead in my recruitment.”

Thompson is a four-star prospect and is ranked No. 131 nationally and is the No. 5 S in his class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Currently, it is believed that Texas is the favorite to land him, but he said himself that it is too early in his recruitment to list a leader. However, Texas A&M has also been gaining momentum as of late.

We will learn more when he starts taking visits to schools outside of his home state, which has become a must for Ohio State if they want to remain in the running. Thompson’s recruitment will only get more crowded from here so the Buckeyes will need to get him to Columbus if they are serious about getting a commitment from him.

Quick Hit:

  • Ohio State’s top recruiter could in fact be someone not yet officially apart of the organization. Five-star commit in 2020 Paris Johnson Jr. has quickly been recruiting other members in his class to join him in Columbus, most recently with five-star CB Elias Ricks.

then you know you gotta be apart of DBU.. #GoBucks https://t.co/kJQ17oEcE5
