In his first year at Ohio State, Igbinosun was on the field more than any other Buckeye defensive player.
Every day from now until the start of the season, Land-Grant Holy Land is highlighting Ohio State football players that you should be watching this season. Check out all of our ”Player to Watch” articles to get ready for the season opener against Akron.
Confidence has never been an issue for cornerback Davison Igbinosun. In high school, Igbinosun was a four-star recruit in New Jersey, excelling on both sides of the football. Not only did Igbinosun intercept seven passes and record over 200 tackles on defense, he also rushed for nearly 900 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 75 carries on offense. Despite his offensive prowess, it was obvious that defense was going to be where Igbinosun was going to make the biggest impact on the field. Igbinosun committed to Ole Miss over Notre Dame, Tennessee, and a number of other Power 5 conference schools.
It didn’t take long for Igbinosun to get on the field in Oxford, playing in 13 games and starting 10 contests as a freshman. In 2022, Igbinosun was credited with 37 tackles and five pass breakups, earning him Freshman All-American honors from College Football News. Despite his impressive freshman season, Igbinosun decided to enter the transfer portal. With Ohio State looking for depth at defensive back, Igbinosun announced he would be a Buckeye in late January 2023.
Igbinosun made an immediate impact on defense for Ohio State, playing in all 13 games for the Buckeyes in 2023, finishing the season with 59 tackles, five passes defensed, and two fumble recoveries. Not only was Igbinosun a playmaker in his first season in Columbus, he also was reliable, with his 781 snaps played being a team-high on defense. The pairing of Igbinosun and Denzel Burke was one of the best cornerback combos in the country.

With how he has played in his first two seasons of college football, it is understandable why Igbinosun talks a lot on the field. According to some of his teammates, Igbinosun is the biggest trash-talker on the team. While for some the title might be a negative, Igbinosun has proved he can back up his talk with some big plays. Quarterbacks might want to think twice about throwing at Igbinosun because they might give him even more to talk about.
What opponents should be scared about is that Igbinosun is only going to get better. The junior battles talented receivers like Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, and Jeremiah Smith in practice. Iron sharpens iron and we are going to see an even better version of Igbinosun in 2024 than we saw in 2023. This feels like the year where we see Igbinosun get his first college football interception, which is about the only thing that has eluded him over the last two seasons. By the time his Ohio State career wraps up, expect Igbinosun to be picked in the first two days of the NFL Draft since he has shown he has the tools to be a factor at the next level.
