Ohio State AD's $38M Deficit

ORD_Buckeye

Wrong glass, Sir.
Spending ballooned to $300M despite knowing well in advance that there would only be 6 home games. Completely inept management. Hire an aggy and a cornhusker and get aggy/cornhusker competence, I guess.

Probably no different than any company, which, anticipating a decline in revenues, makes a conscious decision to 'overspend' revenue, utilizing reserves put away for just such an occasion. Lack of home games is easy to project, but lack of sales of 'stuff' could be a head-scratcher. Didn't realize that home games (other than seats, popcorn and beer sales) had such a high ceiling for jerseys, pennants, hats, etc. Well, winning the Nati should increase sales of 'stuff' now, what with the last statue ten years old. And yes, I'm going to get my mug, and refresh my tire valve stem covers. Don't know how many years of negative numbs the AD can handle, so expect the donation phone calls to increase.

I disagree to an extent.....it's better to operate at a deficit in this scenario.......if there's a surplus, it's often expected, and therefore there can be a reduction in spend.

Not much different than our federal gov't....

And exactly how they operated at Texas A&M while fundraising for stadium renovations.....I don't think this was a "miss" at all.....I 100% believe they knew they'd operate into a deficit this year.

I don't believe that happened on the aggy's watch. Revenues for the 2024 fiscal year reflect the 2023 season. Not here to praise the aggy, just can't pin this on him.

Bjork has only been the AD since late spring/summer. I have a hard time believing he is responsible for the deficit.

The budget has probably always been a mess.
But as things get progressively more expensive in the football department, tough choices need to be made.

I have a feeling Bjork puts these things out for a reason, and this is most likely prepping people for either cutting sports, or asking for donations, or both.

From what it seems, both Bjork and Ted Carter place a large value on the football team. The football team is numero uno.

Most SEC schools have a fraction of the sports teams that OSU has, because they are football centric. Gene Smith created a sports juggernaut, that ate the budget. That will probably change.

Nothing to get worked up about from what I read at first glance.

38MM is not a lot of money vs a budget of 300 and it’s a known, one off thing (6 home games) year.

What are you going to do, cut spending on the cash cow when you know another positive revenue fiscal year is under way?

This is a timing issue. Nothing more.

Not worried about it either. Plus aside from only 6 home games, most games at home aside from The Game were not exactly banner matchups that drive in revenue.

Regardless, we got a Natty and Bjork is off to a good start there. I also think he is doing a good job with other programs so far, or at least the ones I follow. If there is an actual issue with the budget, it is Ohio State and you can be damn sure it will be corrected.
