Michigan's Novak might face punishment for elbowing OSU's Hill

by Jeff Arnold | The Ann Arbor News Thursday January 29, 2009, 7:03 AM

COLUMBUS, OHIO - What started as Zack Novak's attempt to make "an aggressive box out" resulted in the University of Michigan freshman being ejected and facing possible further punishment.
Novak was kicked out of Michigan's 72-54 loss to Ohio State with 1:26 remaining after he elbowed Buckeyes' reserve guard P.J. Hill in the face during an Evan Turner free throw.

Words were exchanged between the two teams, and both coaches came on to the floor before the situation could escalate.
Novak said Hill said something to him before the free throw, but would not disclose what was said.

"I was just trying to get the rebound," Novak said. "I'm sure (the elbow) looks pretty bad. It wasn't my intention to hurt anybody. We'll just have to see."

Wolverines coach John Beilein said he will have to see the tape of the incident before he can comment further.

Beilein said he asked game officials to review the replay on monitors so that if action is taken later, it will be based on a decision made at the time of the incident.

"If it was overly aggressive, then we learn a valuable lesson," said Beilein, who said he doesn't know the rule regarding flagrant fouls and the penalties they can carry.

"My guess is if (the officials) threw him out, he made a mistake that he'll learn from."

Oh, brother
When two rivals play twice in a span of two weeks, Michigan forward DeShawn Sims said there is bound to be some carried over bad blood.
But when asked if Wednesday night's heated exchange had more to do with a long-standing rivalry, Sims replied, "Playing Ohio State is like playing your bigger brother - you have to win to gain their respect. You have to come out and play hard otherwise, they won't respect you."

Bullshit.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Michael Arace commentary: Hill takes one on the chin, helps OSU get key win
Hill, too, knew something else was going to happen. But he was not expecting an elbow to the jaw.

"I told the coach and the ref to watch," Hill said. "I saw it coming. He tried to bump me the first time. (Then) he elbowed me right in the jaw. He got me good, too. I'm a little sore.

"It was a box-out with elbows high," Beilein said. "If it was overly aggressive, then we learned a valuable lesson."

Beilein is an even bigger moron than i thought. Novak was looking to his right watching evan turner shoot so he knew when to box out. He new exactly where PJ Hills face was. There is "defending your player" and then there is "being a douche".

Beilein is in the "being a douche" category.

evan turner-i questioned the play of the team using the hitchionary. the ultimate word in the hitchionary is weighty. the gold standard of weighty is the gordie how hatrick (goal, ast and fght-thats won). near the end of the game turner had 25 pts, 5 rbs, 4 ast and the hill/novak incident pops up, turner gets involved then he starts to cirle a la jon "nasty" mirasty. im thinking oh man here we go.... (ps if you dont know who nasty mirasty is youtube it-you wont be disappointed). his teammates and officials kept the incident in hand and let evan keep his gloves on. but who says these guys dont listen to me?

Disagree. A coach should never rip his own player publicly. I would expect JT and Thad to handle it the same way. I'd bet the analysis behind closed doors was much more harsh and the lesson learned at practice will include a few thousand stairs.

I agree that a coach should not rip his player publicly. But in this case, a concise "no comment" woud have been the proper response. Instead, Beilein chose to minimize the incident, showing his true Wolverine nature.

Pfooey on Beilein, and fuck Michigan.

I agree that you can't rip your players in public. But there's a line between saying something calculated and diplomatic about the situation dropping this

...and I'll agree to disagree. IMO, the comment was sufficient for the situation...handle it after further review once you get home.

Credit goes out to P.J. Hill for handling the situation maturely both for himself and his team. A lot of kids would have reacted/overreacted rather than just letting the situation play out with the officials, but P.J. kept his head on straight. Same goes for Evan Turner, who stepped up on behalf of his teammate, again without letting things get out of hand.

Here's a more complete version of what Beilein said after the game. It doesn't seem out of line to me.

And ironically his suggestion of using the monitor is what clinched Novak being ejected.

"I'd have to watch the film to see what exactly happened," the UM coach said. "He was boxing out and his elbows were high. If he was overly aggressive, then he learned a valuable lesson."

Beilein said he asked the officials to watch the video replay.

"I'm the stupid idiot who wanted them to look at the monitor," he said.

I think a 1-game suspension would be the proper thing to do. Missing the final 1:27 of a game that's already over isn't much of a deterrent.
