Ohio State 65, Northwestern 47 (final)

DDN

Buckeyes can't afford to stumble at Northwestern

Lacking a signature victory, Ohio State is on the NCAA tournament bubble.

COLUMBUS ? It is a must-win situation for the Ohio State men's basketball team when it plays at Northwestern tonight. The thing is, OSU coach Thad Matta doesn't want to call it that.
"No. Just play well," Matta said quickly when asked if his team had to win at Northwestern. "We must play well, no ifs, ands or buts. We haven't talked about winning or losing with this team ? just playing our best every day."

Inconsistency has been an ongoing problem for a team that starts two freshmen, two second-year players and senior Jamar Butler. It cannot be a problem much longer or else Ohio State will find itself locked out of an NCAA trip ? something that has never happened in Matta's six previous years at three locales as a college head coach.

Stats below are through 2/12:

RPI (From Pomeroy)
Ohio State: 36 (down from 34 vs. Indiana)
Northwestern: 211

Pomeroy (Strength/Power Rankings)
Ohio State: 27 (down from 26 vs. Indiana)
Northwestern: 169

Pomeroy projects an Ohio State 68-56 victory and gives Ohio State a 90% chance of winning.

Ohio State RPI Strength of Schedule: 22

This is a MUST win as far as RPI is concerned (not to mention an outside shot at the B10 championship and NCAA Tournament draws).

Even tho we have 8 losses our RPI continues to stay high...

If we could only beat a couple of teams like MSU, IU, Wisky, Purdue our RPI would go even farther up...that is of course as long as we don't lose the games against NW, Michigan, and Minny...

I wonder how many times Pomeroy has been right this season regarding Ohio State. Don't expect you to research it but it would be interesting.
