Game Thread Ohio State 56, Miami of Ohio 10 (Sept 01, 2012)

Game Thoughts...

  • Potential is there for sure. The flashes were awesome...the mistakes were cringe-worthy.
  • Braxton is caught between playing in the system and being 'Braxton' Once he gets more comfortable, he will realize the scheme will make him even more lethal.
  • Defensively...strange game to use as a compass. Empty sets limit personnel and scheme. The second half saw more pressure, more turnovers forced and another secondary breakdown. Due to big plays, average game at best overall.
  • Offensively, today was laboratory scene. Look for a more fine-tuned approach next week as the O staff ran numerous trials this afternoon.
  • Finally, we saw a culture change today...the 4th and goal attempt, the curbstomp TDs, and the continued fast-pace work under 2 minutes.
  • Its a new brand of football right now...no more naps during offense and no more trophies for participating. Hopefully the success will mirror and even surpass the old staff.

Where do you guys feel Dysert ranks as far as QB's we'l face this year?

One thing I noticed was the pressure was there but their QB did a very good job of just getting rid of the ball just as he was going down. Very frustrating and I'm not too sure we'll face a better PURE passer the rest of the year.

braxton...long runs..1 on 1 open field...as musberger would say "forget about it" - right handed mike vick....better passer...
travis howard...been the talk of the camp..he caught the ball every time
shazier picked up where he left of..actually he got better...double digit tackles?
shutt washington marcus spence dunn reeves ...its all about hard work!

The feeling one gets when you see your favorite college football program drop 56...LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO...on an inferior opponent...I haven't felt it in a long time. I think I'm going to go beat the crap out of the midget across the street to keep the feeling flowing.

as a passer and game-manager? i don't see anyone on our schedule who appears to be as good or better. denard is scarier, but dysert with a good receiving corps on a team with decent bcs talent would be no fun to face.

I saw him rated 7th among Qbs for next years draft.

Some thoughts
  • Braxton's throwing motion. Saw a couple ducks.
  • Dline pressure was inconsistent all game, like said above - empty sets negate that.
  • John Simon is John Simon. Playing with Senior Intensity.
  • You'd think our CB's would squat on the hitch routes when they see the QB on a roll out.
  • Shazier is the most athletic LB I've seen in the S&G. Not quite as long as some of you old timers, but he just fly's.
  • Safety play is still slightly suspect.
  • Braxton needs to settle down, again like said above. Play within the offense and yourself. The rest will come.
  • Hyde proves a big back can work in Meyer's system.
  • Philly Brown & Devin Smith are an awesome duo.
  • Tons of room for improvement. Mistakes here or there, but a very talented team. Sky is the limit.
  • It's football season, its a W. I'll take it. :oh:

Agreed. Dysert may surpass Roethlisberger's records at Miami.. Should tell you where he's at on the list.

Easily the best pocket passer we'll face all year. Everyone else in the Big 10, sans Denard aren't going to be that good. Receivers had tons of drops. It would of been ugly if they weren't MAC-caliber talent. They said (during the game) that well over 20 NFL teams are watching Dysert... With good reason.

Thoughts:

- This freshman class is going to be very good. Thought we saw some better pressure in second half when Spence and Washington saw increased reps. Schutt also had his name called 2-3 times late in the game. Marcus had a nice tackle on special teams, Reeves looked like he could be an explosive returner, and Dunn is very good.

- This team must lets it's RBs (mainly Hyde) get touches. First quarter Braxton kept the ball too many times and was clearly antsy. As soon as Carlos got some touches, everything started to work in the passing game.

- Love the commitment to power football by Meyer. Best runs of the day came on power plays where Boren buried his man and Braxton burst through the line. Opposing fans don't consider this power football because the QB is running, but the blocking clearly shows these are power run plays.

- RB is strongest offensive position on team. All three guys are good in my opinion, and as I said, Carlos needs his touches.

- WR are the fastest growing unit. They all displayed excellent hands and the catches by Devin and Evan were tremendous. Philly looks set to catch 70+ balls this year.

- Oline. Thought they were solid in pass pro and solid in run game. Thought I'd see us get more push in the run block game, but overall this unit was solid.

- Braxton. Had a B or B- game in my opinion. The fact he put up almost 400 yards of offense yet had a B game shows u the potential. However, some of his throws were ill advised and he put the ball on the ground twice (once recovered his own fumble and other time luckily got an intentional grounding instead of fumble). Also thought he hurried himself too often.. He had a pocket most of the day, would like to see him move around the pocket with more confidence.

Defensive:

- Do not like what I've seen last year in regards to the way we attack a spread. Very passive. Three man rush. Not sure I get the JT Moore experiment. Did not like seeing Hankins at DE in a 3 man front. Thought we were done with that.

- Just my opinion, but can we put pass rushers on the field and let them go? Too much dropping of Simon, Williams, Spence into the pass routes as opposed to letting them get upfield and hit the QB.

- DBs must improve tackling and communication. They are the weak link on this team despite having experience and talent. Is it the personnel or the scheme here? No reason why talents like Roby-Howard-Bryant-Barnett should be blowing so many assignments.

- Would not be surprising if Spence and Washington are getting starter type snaps by mid season.

Overall:
Excited to see where this offense can go. Concerned about defense, looked way too much like last season's unit (lack of pass rush, blown DB assignments)

Looking at the score it would seem like OSU dominated this one, but watching it seemed differently.

I felt like OSU just made plays when needed to, but most certainly didnt stronghold the game tempo. If Miami had receivers that could catch the ball better it would have certainly been closer.
