Game Thread Ohio State 34, Minnesota 21 (Sep. 27)

On the rise, or out of their league?

Saturday's Big Ten opener at Ohio State will test how much the Gophers, who went 0-8 in the conference last year, have improved.
Last update: September 22, 2008 - 12:52 AM

We're one month in and what do we know?
We know the Gophers football team has improved, especially on defense. We know the team is more confident, more aggressive, more successful.
But how much more?
The Big Ten has taken a few lumps the past month. Michigan is struggling to go from its traditional power game to Rich Rodriguez's spread offense. Ohio State struggled with two mid-major teams and got squished by Southern California.

At least we get to go up/tested against another mobile QB. half the teams were playing this year or more are mobile QBs.
Weber is definitely shifty but I wouldnt call him a mobile QB in the same style as Juice or Kellen Lewis.

We wont be running Weber very much I imagine (he ran a lot in the game between us lat year). But he can make guys miss in the open field, and as someone else posted, is a load to bring down.

That seems to be the trend in football today, for more teams to go with more athletic QBs that go on the run with speed and still have a strong arm down field. Such as the case with the Illinois quarterback and the spread offense.

The game this saturday will be a good measuring stick for Ohio State. There is so much still left on the table to choose from. No Beanie - TP's real test -
the missed tackles that seem to haunt the defense. Are we playing too tight or are we still resting on our laurels. It all has to come together real quick saturday. None of us want to have another season like 2004. We can only hope for the best.

I am not going to predict an upset, but do know that Minney is playing very well right now. +11 TO margin and over 95% red zone efficiency. They arent making mistakes, and have cut down on big plays on defense.

This is the fastest Minney team every--esp on defense. Expect Simoni Lawrence (#21) to be the designated SPY on Pryor.

Most importantly the team has a little swagger and confidence which should go a long ways. Kids are really buying into Brewster's scheme.

Light years from USC, but I think Minney will be the second best team you have played this year. If we come out and play our game it shoudl be a good preview of teams like Illinois, NW, and Purdue.

stpaul, you will have to check out the BP preview of the game, which usually posts here on Wednesday or Thursday. It's always good reading. Except the Lighter Side, which is always long-winded blowhard garbage.

Will do--I saw the preview for Troy and it looked good.

I am just hoping for an injury free game, and that Brewster's Minney team comes out, plays hard and with passion, and shows the upper tier that we are coming back and earns respect.

Also everyone need to check out TCF Bank Stadium site. It opens up next fall, and I am looking forward to hosting you folks at Oct 30, 2010. Check out the virtual tours...our fans are just going nuts over this new facility.

thanks for the post stpaulgoph. i am excited to see the new stadium and i think its awesome that all 11 schools in the conference now have on campus stadiums. i hate dome football and to have minn return to an open air stadium is great news all around. good luck this year (except this sat of course) and stick around the planet.

Isnt that the scenario as always. New Stadium sites always seems to bring out the best in the fans and thier football teams. I have seen your new Stadium and it will be exciting times for the Gopher fans. I have always liked Glen Mason and it was too bad to see what happened to his tenure there at Minney.

Looks like Mason will be an analyst for this game on the Big Ten Network. It'll be interesting to hear his comments on his old team.

Can you care to expan on that? I know Mason was an OSU grad and there might be a lot of fondness on the board. Curious as to your thoughts.

which one? hes a former coach at both... fired from both...
I assume he meant Minnesota. His fondness/allegiance to OSU is clear. He thought he was gonna get the job (good choice in taking the Vest) and he will be honorary captain.

I have no hard feelings with Mason, but some things make me cringe, like when I saw him on the Big Ten Network laughing at the Minney schedule...

A schedule he set up like 5 years ago

He was thought to be the next head coach at Ohio State after Cooper was let go. He was very dissapointed when Tressel was chosen. Yes he was pretty well thought of in Columbus at the time. Even alot of OSU fans were stunned when Tressel was picked. And Mason was quoated as saying after that - he would never seek another position in coaching again if Minney ever let him go. He recruited alot of good Ohio football players and that was to be his strongpoint. I though he did a great job at Minnesota. Hopes this makes it a better picture for you. You probably know more than i on why he was let go.
