APCurtis Painter
Before Ohio State fans worry at all about Purdue senior quarterback Curtis Painter, be aware that Painter is two players.
There is Painter the MAC-killer and Painter the Big Game No-Show.
I have nothing against Painter, but these are the kinds of things that maybe should be pondered before schools launch preseason Heisman campaigns.
For the sake of argument, I have chosen to designate some Purdue games during Painter's tenure as "Big Games." These include all games against Big Ten traditional and recent powers Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State, regular in-state rival Notre Dame, and all games against ranked teams.
Games that don't fit any of those categories are classified as "other."
In Big Games with Painter as the starting quarterback, Purdue is 1-12, the win coming last year against Notre Dame when the Irish went 3-9.
In other games, Painter is 20-4.
In Big Games, Painter's average game is to complete 22 of 41 passes (54 percent) for 234 yards. Also, in these 13 Big Games, he has a total of 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
In other games, Painter's average game is to complete 24 of 39 passes (63 percent) for 290 yards. Also, is these 24 other games, he has a total of 45 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
