Ohio Stadium aka THE Horseshoe (Official Thread)

Horseshoe could get permanent lighting

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State is looking into the possibility of adding permanent lights to Ohio Stadium, athletic director Gene Smith said yesterday.

The university has initiated a study, being conducted by a Cleveland engineering firm, but has no timetable for a decision.

The impetus for the study was Michigan's decision this year to add permanent lights at Michigan Stadium, which were completed in November at a cost of $1.8million.

"We have never really looked into it since about the mid-1990s, so we thought, 'Let's look and see what it would cost and see if there's any value to it,'" Smith said.

Currently, portable lights are brought in for every night game and for 3:30 p.m. games later in the year. This season, lights were brought in for two games.

Ohio State does not directly pay for the portable lights - approximately $80,000 per game, Smith said. Television networks pay the tab, but the expense is then deducted from the pool of money that is annually distributed to each Big Ten school.

"It's not a significant amount" in OSU's athletic budget, Smith said.

That may seem expensive, but . . .

Do you know how many Big Ten Network employees it takes to change a light bulb?

0. None of them have any lights on.

$80k a game for those lights? Jesus, is that from the same place the gov't gets the $10k hammers?
It's probably more in the realm of $5K to rent the lights and $75K for the insurance in case the lights tip over or a drunk fan decides to scale the tower or tamper with the electric out in the parking lot.

Maybe now OSU will stop using rented wimpy lights, or you know, use the money from the baseball, softball & track lights which are run during late games.

They spend money on so many facility upgrades, why is their main event darker than the majority of high school games?
