Ohio St. players let their hair down

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Several of Ohio State's best players are doing their best to avoid clipping.

Senior linebackers A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter are sporting ultralong hair as they go through preseason workouts with the Buckeyes. Offensive lineman Nick Mangold has let his blond locks grow even longer than usual.

This would seem to put the players on a collision course with coach Jim Tressel, who appears to be to long hair what Buckeyes are to Wolverines. Then again, what seems to be the case might not be accurate.

"You know, I grew up in the early '70s in college and I had plenty of teammates who had a little hair," said coach Jim Tressel, who looks about as clean-cut as a 1950s paperboy. "I don't have a problem with that, as long as they look -- I don't know what the right word is -- as long as they look sharp."

There are pictures circulating of Tressel during his days at Baldwin-Wallace College that show him with long sideburns inching down his jaw and hair curling over his ears -- a look that's hard to mesh with his current close-cropped, button-down, senatorial style.

The three linebackers decided to avoid haircuts this summer, not to make a political statement but as a sign of unity.

"We've done it for a while," Schlegel said. "We're just going to keep it rolling. There's nothing wrong with that -- just have a little fun."

Schlegel said he didn't think Tressel and his fellow coaches minded the new look.

"They just want you to be lined up and look presentable," he said. "I'm shaving and my hair's trimmed and doesn't look like it's all over the place. He [Tressel] just wants you to be nice and clean."

Schlegel said the three players hope to avoid getting a haircut until they reach the national championship game.

Mangold has kept his hair long throughout his four years on campus.

It's not just the seniors, either. Freshman tailback Maurice Wells sports lengthy cornrows that stick out the back of his helmet.

"I had cornrows," Tressel cracked. "Mine were that long -- with the extenders.

I bet the cornrows comment was from his promise to do that a few years ago. Did real pictures ever surface of that?

I read somewhere that the players were going to cut their hair after an undefeated season.

vCash for whoever posts up the pic of Tressel with long hair!

In an unrelated note, my dad totally dresses exactly like Tressel (polo shirt, dark slacks and tennis shoes) so I got him THE sweater vest for his birthday. He wore it today and I could not stop laughing - in a good way though, he's a big fan of it!

Prior to the 2002 season, Tressel promised the team that if they won the national title, Tressel would let the team give him cornrows -- at least that was the legend. If that ever came to fruition, I imagine Tressel kept the cornrows in his hair all of five minutes. I've never seen any pictures or heard from former team members that that actually happened though. Tressel's comment in this article is the first I've ever heard of this story being true.

Apparently Mo Wells is making a statement in camp.

No, tressel did get cornrows. I can't remember what I was listening to, but either on 1460 the fan or on the bucknuts radio hour, a current player said he definitely showed up in cornrows.

it's true... i remember reading an article at the start of winter conditioning in '03... Tressel wasn't there, and all the kids were wondering what was going on... then he showed up wearing a do-rag... they were like 'WTF?' that's when he took off the rag, and they saw him with the cornrows... the kids just died...

that's why Tressel was cracking about his hair being that long with the extensions... because he had to get them put in in order to braid his 'do up...

Tressel is WAY more cool than people give him credit for...
