Ohio natives/former OSU coaches still active

mboden

Kern Country
I read recently where head coaches of the last 5 ncaa football champs were all former OSU asst's. Does anyone know of a link, or can they list in this thread, the names of former OSU asst coaches and/or Ohio natives that are still active in football today? I think the last 5 nat'l champ coaches are Tressel (duh), Urban Meyer (native, possible osu asst coach), Pete Carroll (asst?), Nick Saban (native and asst?), and Larry Coker (formerly of Miami, not sure if he's still active). There's a ton of people that should make this list, it seems every team in Div. 1 has a former OSU asst. coach on staff....and thanks for any help.

Pete Carroll was an assistant in 79, he came over with Earle from Iowa State.

Meyer was a graduate assistant in 86-87 after playing for UC.

Saban was an assistant in 80 & 81.

Coker was at Ohio State from 93-95 first as a DB coach and then handling the QBs his last year.

Stoops is also an Ohio native, although he didn't coach here, so that would take it back another year but..

You're forgetting Mack Brown though, so it it doesn't run consecutively.

Still 6 out of 7 isn't bad

I did some research on this yesterday while planning to start a similar thread. Here's what I found:

For the second year in a row both head coaches in the NCG have been born in Ohio.
Since the 2000 season 7 out of the 10 head coaches in the NCG have either been born in Ohio (Tressel, Miles, Meyer, Stoops) or were OSU assistants (Carroll, Saban, Coker).
If you want to stretch this a little Frank Solich was born in PA but moved to and played HS ball in Ohio.
Only Mack Brown and Bobby Bowden have no ties to Ohio that I could find.

CBS Story

No matter where trophy resides, this decade belongs to Ohio

NEW ORLEANS -- This has been the Ohio decade.

It started with Youngstown native Bob Stoops running the table with Oklahoma in 2000. The pride of Mentor, Jim Tressel, got his ring in 2002. Ashtabula's Urban Meyer won it all with Florida in 2006.

Each small-town Ohio boy won a national championship in his second season with his school. In the process, these three redefined expectations for coaches everywhere. If they could do it in two years, surmised the average AD, why can't my guy?

Maybe it's an Ohio thing. This is their time. This is their state's time. No matter what happens in Monday's BCS National Championship Game, four of this decade's eight BCS titles will have been won by Ohio natives.

That's not a coincidence for Ohio. That's a dynasty, and not a new one.

That's the first time I have seen "The Ohio Connection" mentioned outside of this board. If anyone can find an earlier reference in the national media, post it.

Rivals ran a story a year and a half ago about head coaches with Ohio ties...

Need a coach? Look to Ohio

It's not uncommon for boys to grow up dreaming of being astronauts or firemen.

In Ohio you can add football coach. And while parents may pay lip service to the aeronautical hopes of their boys, when a kid in the Buckeye State says he's going to be a football coach, you buy him a whistle and chalkboard and get out of the way.

Sixteen current Division I-A head football coaches are from Ohio. That's four more than second-place California. No other state has produced more than six current head coaches.

How do you explain such a phenomenon?
