(Official) Mike Davis to Leave Indiana at the End of the Season

Don't be surprised if Indiana men's basketball coach Mike Davis resigns within 48 hours. Former Timberwolves assistant Randy Wittman, an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic, will be a finalist for the Hoosiers job. But the latest is that another Indiana grad, Steve Alford at Iowa, already has the backing of influential alumni.

Hoosiers coach Mike Davis is sick -- and growing a bit tired of basketball fans at Indiana. On Monday morning he was nominating Steve Alford -- a former Indiana All-American -- as his successor; and believes he won't return as the Hoosiers' coach next season.

At the end of Saturday's postgame news conference following Iowa's 70-67 victory over Indiana, former IU All-American and current Iowa coach Steve Alford was asked if he would be a candidate for the IU coaching job, should it open. "I don't answer hypothetical questions,'' Alford said.

In response, Floyd Keith, executive director of the Black Coaches Association, contacted Indiana athletics director Rick Greenspan to say he was troubled by the racial implications of the protest, The Star reported.

Davis is black.

"You could look at it in different ways, but it can also be perceived that this ‘blackout’ meant they wanted to get the black guy out," Keith told the newspaper.

Why must everything involving a black person in the public eye be made into a race issue?:roll1:

See - that's Steve talking just like you would expect a Knight coached player to talk.

I can't see how Davis stays. The fans don't want him, he isn't even getting the obligatory "he's our man" vote of support from an AD or team member. Teh recruits / prospects story is very well documented - and you have an heir apparent waiting in the wings in the form of Alford.

Make no mistake, though if it is wonder-boy who returns to IU then recruiting Indiana becomes a much tougher task, for Ohio State, for ND and for Purdue.

Has anything ever NOT been Mike Davis' fault? He sure likes to blame fans, students, Knight....

Absolutely agreed. In my opinion, Mike Davis always is trying to pass the buck. In addition, I don't think he's that great of an overall coach (a HUGE aspect of which is ability to recruit). Sure, he went to the NC game with Knight's talent, but look at what he's done since then--a game over .500 two years ago and a game under last year. And a good point was made that he'd really be in poor shape if it weren't for Killingsworth this year. In my opinion, Mike Davis hasn't shown that he deserves to coach at IU, one of the more prestigious programs in the nation.

The Alford to Indiana thing is interesting to me. Will they pay more,? Is he interested in trying to replace Knight? He's been successful at Iowa, is Indiana his career job.? Lots of interesting questions there. ?

I don't know that Alford is good enough to stick at Indiana as a career job either. Then again, many legends are impossible to replace, and it takes decades before anyone can have a long tenure like that again, if ever (Bear Bryant, Bobby Knight, Dean Smith, John Wooden...) Our coach Tressel might be that guy here, but it's taken almost 30 years to get him in that position. I don't know that anyone can be a career guy at Indiana at this point...guess we'll see.

Davis expected to join Hoosiers at Penn StateFebruary 14, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana coach Mike Davis was expected to return to the sidelines Wednesday night at Penn State after missing one game because of illness.
The school said Davis attended practice Tuesday and appeared much healthier after flulike symptoms the past several days. He missed Saturday's home game against Iowa and did not do his weekly radio show Monday night.

Davis has come under scrutiny recently, with Hoosiers having lost five of six games and falling 2 1/2 games behind Iowa in the Big Ten title race. Indiana slipped out of the Top 25 for the first time this season.

The Hoosiers (13-8 5-5 Big Ten) will try to end a three-game losing streak by winning their first conference road game of the season against Penn State. The Nittany Lions (11-11 3-8) are tied for last place in the league. Davis closed practices this week, a rarity during his six years as coach, and was unavailable for comment.

His record the last three years has been below standard for Indiana and he has not been able to keep the talent in Indiana. When you can't recruit your own state, your in trouble. He is following a legend and he understood what he was getting into, so I give him some respect for that but he has now backed himself into a corner with his comments to the media and its very obvious the Indiana boosters have had enough.

I realize that the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan both moved their national headquarters out of Indianapolis only in the early 1980s, but if race was an issue, why would Indiana have appointed Davis anyway?

Indiana coach says he won’t resign

</IMG> DARRON CUMMINGS | ASSOCIATED PRESS Embattled coach Mike Davis isn’t a fan favorite at Indiana these days, especially with the Hoosiers on a skid that has seen them lose five of six.

INDIANAPOLIS — Mike Davis doesn’t plan to resign or otherwise leave Indiana anytime soon.
After fueling speculation Monday that his tenure with the Hoosiers might be short-lived, Davis said in interviews yesterday that he appreciated the opportunity to coach one of the nation’s top basketball programs.
"I’m not quitting. I’m going to coach the remainder of the season," he said during an interview with The Sporting News Radio. "We’re right there at making the tournament; we’re right there. Now someone has to lose for us to have a chance to win the conference championship, but everything is right there."
Questions about Davis’ future have increased with the Hoosiers (13-8, 5-5) losing five of their past six Big Ten games. As the team boarded a plane in Bloomington, Ind., to travel to Penn State for a game tonight, Davis told Indianapolis television station WTHR that he could not comment on whether he would return next season.
After a 10-2 start, this season has turned sour for Davis, who has gone 109-75 since he replaced the fired Bob Knight in September 2000. While he coached Indiana to the 2002 NCAA championship game, the Hoosiers went 29-29 the past two seasons, missing the NCAA Tournament both years.
"It’s just too much emphasis on Mike Davis. It’s just too much emphasis on every press conference. It’s just too much emphasis on where he’s going to be at next year," Davis said in the radio interview. "It’s been six years now. So it’s time for everybody to get on the same page and just pull for these young men."
Asked Monday to explain why Hoosiers fans have embraced him tepidly, Davis suggested it was because he wasn’t an Indiana alum.
On talk radio and on Internet sites, many fans speculated that meant Davis already had determined his future likely would be elsewhere. Not so, Davis said.
"I appreciate this opportunity; it’s a blessing for me," he said. "If I say some things out of line, if I say some things people don’t agree with, I’m not the first one to do that."
Davis missed a 70-67 loss to Iowa on Saturday, the Hoosiers’ first Big Ten home loss of the season, because of flu-like symptoms. He attended practice yesterday and is expected to coach tonight.
The question now is whether the Hoosiers can end their slump in time to save their coach’s job — something even Davis can’t answer yet. "Let’s just unite. Let’s unite the program. Let’s unite the former players. Let’s unite the fans. Let’s unite the alumni," he said. "Let’s all get on the same page, whether Mike Davis is here or not."
Questions about Davis irk Bobby Knight
Wednesday, February 15, 2006

CHICAGO — A few hours after abruptly ending an ESPN interview, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight participated in an ESPN conference call to promote his new reality show, Knight School.
But that call began with an ESPN spokesman asking the media to ‘‘please understand that we are here to talk exclusively about Knight School. I hope you’d all respect that."
Earlier on ESPN2’s Cold Pizza, host Dana Jacobson twice tried to ask Knight about coach Mike Davis’ future at Indiana. After declining to answer, Knight, appearing via satellite, removed his earpiece and walked off.
Knight School, a six-episode series that debuts at 10 p.m. Sunday on ESPN, chronicles 16 basketball players who vie to make Knight’s team as a walk-on.

Something irked Bobby Knight? I'm shocked! :)

I'll give you a good reason why they want Davis gone. Look at who he lost to Thad next year. That's right, Oden and Conley both play in Indiana. If Matta can continue to steal the best out of Indiana then Davis should be out of a job.

You forgot about players like Josh McRoberts and Sean May. Matta has always recruited Indiana well, but there are many other players Davis hasn't recruited from Indiana to play in Bloomington.

His record has been below the standards for Indiana, but what really has people worried around the program is his inability to recruit the best players in Indiana. Also, its been mentioned earlier that it seems he doesn't develop players that well. There is also the perception, either right or wrong that his early success at Indiana is because he had BK's recruits. Now he is working with his recruits.
