Official BCS-CG Bulletin Board Thread

One thing on these shock jock types for sports.

-Its gotten a lot worse in a short amount of time, it really never used to be like this.

-The very people who are their target market(less intelligent, highly emotional sports nuts) are a dangerous element to constatntly be fucking with imo.

-Look at what those crazy ass Europeans do over soccer. They actually have real riots and kill people. Disagreements over sports with them is no doubt about it physical violence, the only question is that of degree.

-Extrapolate out the increase in agitation and how quickly the shock factor must keep going up to be the number 1 shock jock, add that to the inherent instability of the audience they intentionally target and remember the passion people feel over CFB(its not just a sport to us, its a referendum on who you are and where you are from) and I could honestly see some nut job in the very near future making a Jim Rome wish for the days of Chrissy Everret.

Fortunately for us, the shock jocks won't heed the advice of the sober minds of the world like Jax. They will continue to provide us (and the Buckeyes) with plenty of Bulletin Board material. I intend to enjoy every moment of it, and to read through this thread some time in January and have a good cry (because I'll be laughing so hard).

One small tidbit about Strength of Schedule that Cow-herd kept bringing up...

Saragin
Ohio State - 56
Hawaii - 143
Youngstown State - 131

Yes, the I-AA team Ohio State played has a stronger schedule than Hawaii.

His show gets no air time for me (because he's an idiot in general, not just his anti-OSU/Big10 rants) so I could not care less what he says. If Ohio State takes care of business against WV/USC then he among others will have to eat their words.

He was right when he said it wasn't 30 to 119, though .

somebody please explain to me how west virginia deserves to be in it. they lost to usf who we now see is not very good. they almost lost to louiseville, theyve had many close calls. and as we always do lets pay homage to the great coaches throughout college football from ohio. Gary Pinkell, former Toledo coach, takes a falling program in mizzou and builds them back up, ohio style.

But OSU dialed up Youngstown State, Akron and Kent State....

You're talking about the 1460 thing with Spiels? I heard most of that, and like you're saying, found it desperately transparent. Give SC a pass on Idaho, but not OSU on YSU.... Miss. St. is a solid win for WVU, but Michigan was down... bla bla bla.....

Herbie handed Colin his ass earlier... forget the whole of it but it went something like this...

After stroking SC's schlong...
Colin: Look, the last 4 teams the Buckeyes have lost to have had athletic QBs, they can't match up.
Herbie: Well, you ask Vince Young who was the toughest team he faced in 2005. Seriously. And he will tell you it was Ohio State, and not the SC double corner blitz that he treated like school kids..

On those four losses, I'd add....
1 - 2005 Ohio State lost to Texas - QB Vince Young. Yes, VY was mobile. He popped off a hell of a run in the 1st Q. Then, was shut down the rest of the evening, more or less. OSU held Texas to lowest total of the year, by no stretch was this game a blow out.
2 - 2005 Penn State. QB Michael Robinson. Mobile, I guess. I mean, Colin seems to like to rip on PSU as a has been program with a senile coach... but.. whatever, we'll forgive the double standard. 17 - 10. Mobile fast QB managed a 5 yard scoring drive too! Quite the blow out.
3 - Florida 2007 Fiesta. QB Chris Leak. Somehow Leak is now a mobile QB? True this was the biggest blow out of the bunch, it's ironic that it came with a drop back QB... true Tebow was taking snaps... But, it was no secret what he was doing with the snap. To their credit, they spanked Ohio State..
4- Illinois 2007. QB Juice. Here again, we find Ohio State losing by 7 or less, and revisionist history seems to find this some sort of blow out... and fuck.. this game was not even a month ago... Ohio State played poorly, Illinois made no mistakes.. they won. The refs aside, Illinois wanted it more that day. OK. Sure... but 28-21 isn't exactly giving up 50 to Kentucky and Arkansas, losing, and still considered the "real" best team....

Evan just posted a cute bit from Stewie Mandel's MailBag Here.

The thing I found amusing about Stewie's Mailbag today was his comparison of OSU's OOC schedule to West Virginia's:

Stewie Mandel said:
While the Buckeyes were beating up on I-AA Youngstown State (38-6), 3-9 Kent State (48-3), 4-8 Akron (20-2) and 4-8 Washington (33-14), West Virginia had similar ease with three impending bowl teams: 7-5 Mississippi State (38-13), 7-5 East Carolina (48-7) and 6-6 Maryland (31-14).

It is FASCINATING to me that Stewie extracted 3 teams from WVU's OOC schedule and compared them to Ohio State's entire OOC schedule. I have to wonder how many of his readers were under the false impression that what Stewie showed was the Mountaineer's entire OOC slate. Stewie certainly did nothing to disabuse them of that notion.

The problem for Stewie's point there is that WVU plays in the 8-team Big East Conference. In order to play a 12-game-schedule, they need FIVE OOC games, not three. So who, you might ask, were the two opponents that Stewie conveniently omitted from his comparison? Western Michigan and Marshall.

According to Sagarin:

  • YSU: #94 (I-AA OSU opponent)
  • WMU: #106 (WVU opponent)
  • Marshall: #128 (WVU opponent)
So while OSU was playing an extra conference game, WVU was playing teams worse than the I-AA team that OSU faced.

And someone might want to explain to Stewie that the worst offense in the Big 10 had its best showing all year against a Big East team. Iowa played neither Ohio State nor Michigan, the two best defenses in the Big Ten, and yet was still the worst offense in the conference statistically. And against the worst defenses of our conference, not once did they breech the 30-point barrier in regulation. They scored 35 against Syracuse (and shut the Orangemen out while they were at it). One Big East team matched Iowa's output vs. the Orange, and two Big East teams failed to score 35 points on Syracuse, so the Big Ten's worst offense seems to have been equal to or better than at least 3 (including Syracuse) Big East offenses. And NO Big East Team's managed to shut Syracuse out.

It is arguable that Akron is the only offense that OSU played that was as bad as Iowa. 3 out of the 7 Big East teams that WVU played were that bad or worse. Several of their OOC foes were at least that bad.

Nice analysis, Stewie.

Yeah, that seemed to be his whole argument, not the body of work, not the team but the schedule. And that's been his whole tirade for three days, this morning he had Pete Carroll on and asked him and Pete didn't really bite "Schools do what they want with their schedule" was about his only response.

Cowherd is just trying to get peoples attention, Buckeye Nation is pretty huge, so he knows he's going to get a response:

"WVU Will blow Ohio State off the field"
"Who would want to live in Columbus Ohio?"
"I was attacked on 1460 The Fan earlier, I was logical, they were not"

So basically he's coming at us from every angle to try and boost his ratings. The guy has always been a USC Cock-gobbler, so that's no real surprise. It's not like you have to know what you're talking about to be on talk radio, just how to get a reaction from people and make people listen.

I don't really get bothered by him as much as he makes me laugh, someone trying that hard to be an attention whore is always amusing.

That's funny. On his show this morning (that I had the unfortunate luck to hear) he did the attacking. He portrayed Chris Spielman as some sort of ignorant monkey and his open-and-shut case of YSU, Kent and Akron was not believed!

what an ass.

Nice catch! Count me in as one of those who just assumed. I made sure to drop him a line calling him out on that.

It's guys like you that keep me coming back here instead of the other boards out there.

Here's a bit different slant on Cow-Terd's rant... Colin is employed by ESPN. We all know that ESPN tells some of it's on-camera personalities what to say/what kind of argument to make, why would Colin be any different, especially when he is a shock-jock personality? It is in the best interest of ESPN's parent company (ABC) to see an Ohio State-USC matchup in the Rose Bowl.

[/conspiracy theory]

I still believe this is a real possibility. USC - Ohio State would get better ratings than Missouri - West Virginia.
