Official 2009 "Media Darling" thread

Figured we might want a thread devoted specifically to the potential rise and probable fall of the teams that media has decided to fawn all over this year. My guess is at least one team will have a really good season, and several will fall way, way short. Here are some uber-hyped teams (at least relative to what they maybe ought to be) going into the season:

Ole Miss
Oklahoma State
Cal
North Carolina
Boise State
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Iowa
Oregon State
Notre Dame

Feel free to add and argue away.

My personal feelings:

Most likely to rise to the occasion: Boise State and Michigan State
Most likely to fall: Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Iowa

Iowa's Big Ten road schedule will make it tough for them to make any run for the conference crown. At PSU, at Wiscy, at MSU, and at tOSU. I'll be surprised if they win more than 1 of those 4 games. But that could get them to 9-3 and a top-15 ranking.

You've got Ntre Ame listed twice - but I'm assuming that was intentional. :wink2:

North Carolina could be legit.

#1 - Being the best team in the ACC essentially means you have to choke less frequently than Virginia Tech on any given afternoon. Boston College is out of QBs and neither FSU or Miami are going anywhere with their current coaching.

#2 - UNC went 8-5 last year, including a 3-point loss to VT, a 3-point loss to Virginia, a 2-point loss to Maryland, and a 1-point loss to West Virginia. Other than the 6 turnover debacle vs NC State, UNC was in every game they played.

I'm not about to write off Butch Davis. He's got 6 returning starters on offense, 9 on defense, with 5 upper classmen on the O-Line (returning LT, LG, and C). 11 of those 15 returning starters were Sophs or younger last year.

Ole Miss is going to fall on their face this year...just a hunch. Don't trust Huston Nutt, and don't trust any player outside of Jevean Snead. Just seems like a very trendy pick based upon last years amazing performance. I just don't see it happening....prob an 8 win regular season, IMO.

I don't expect MSU to have a good season. There is no indicator they will. They lose their Qb and their all everything RB.

Notre Dame will have a good season due to their schedule, but will it be a successful season... no. Weiss isn't a good coach and ND will remain mediocre until Urban Meyer comes to town(mark my words).

Ole Miss can't compete with the entire top tier of the SEC, combine that with most likely losing a game or two to a mid tier team in the SEC and they won't be anywhere near in contention for an SEC title. I don't know their OOCS, nor do I even care to waste the time to look. Much over-hyped.

How did Oklahoma State get all this hype? Dez Bryant is good, yes. Zach Robinson is over-rated IMO. What about the rest of the team???? I can't name a defensive player, lol. I don't seem them competing with Texas or Oklahoma(although they usually give Oklahoma a run for their money). Just remember the big 12 doesn't know how to play defense.

As for UNC I think they will go 9-3, 8-4 before their bowl game. They will be a consistent team for years to come, just not a great team. They won't be able to get over that hump, ala South Carolina.

I will say it seems like everyone on the list (besides MSU) was overhyped on NCAA football 10.

I am glad someone made a thread about this topic, because I feel the media always does this and it feels like others don't notice it.

Billmac- I happen to agree. It's a different ballgame when you're playing with a target on your back and everyone is out to get you.

I'm glad more people are starting to speak up about this. For most of the off season all I saw was people talking about how good they're going to be this year. If you're Ole Miss and you just lost 2 first rounders, you're going to fall. That's not true at all schools....but you're Ole Miss.

Well Cal looked good in week 1, and Oklahoma State got a big win. Notre Dame looked impressive for what it was, and Ole Miss pulled away at the end, though nothing today screamed SEC champion.

Big embarassments were Iowa, who should have lost, and Boise State, who won but looked rather unimpressive in doing so.

At least BYU played someone with a pulse, as opposed to ESPN blatantly campaigning for Boise to be the BCS buster after beating a clearly inept Oregon squad at home.
