BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― Officials say an off-duty Baltimore officer shot by uniformed police during an altercation has died in a Baltimore hospital.

Police spokesman Sterling Clifford says the officer was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday at Shock Trauma Medical Center. His name hasn't been released, but Eyewitness News has confirmed he is at least a 40-year veteran of the force.

Clifford says police were called to an altercation shortly after midnight at Haven Street and Pulaski Highway.

Clifford says the man later identified as an off-duty officer drew a weapon, and police drew their guns and fired. He says further details are not immediately available.

Clifford says Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefield has scheduled a news briefing for 9:30 a.m. at police headquarters.

Apparently this guy was out celebrating his 45th anniversary of being an officer in Baltimore City. If that's the case, I'm sure alcohol was involved.
