OF Nick Swisher (All Star, World Series Champion)

So the Indians just gave up a 1st rounder to the Skankees to add Swisher....

I like Swish, but I just don't get what the Indians are doing this off-season. Are they trying to break the team AL strikeout record?

No, they lose their 2nd rounder. Their 1st is protected since it is in the top 10. Given that there is a sandwich round between the 1st and 2nd, the pick lost might not even be a top 50 pick. Having the protected 1st was a big advantage for the Indians in this pursuit.

Doesn't matter, although I didn't think about the protected part of it. The Skankees get an extra selection at the end of the 1st round, but it doesn't come from the Indians.

The Indians probably shouldn't be giving up 2nd rounders to sign 30-something OFs for multi-millions a year. They aren't going to be in a position to win next year. The trade for Stubbs, signing of Reynolds and now the signing of Swisher make no sense when taken together.

1st of all it should be referred to as the trade for Bauer. Stubbs was just a useable piece that they got back in the deal. 2nd, I'm not sure what you think they should be doing. Reynolds was picked up in the bargain bin on a one year deal and is an offensive upgrade from Kotchman (plus he's right handed). Swisher's a suitable replacement for Choo and only cost a 2nd rounder (moneys not that big of a deal considering Hafner finally came off the books). They really have no corner infield, corner outfield or top of rotation prospects ready to come up so all of these guys fit in nicely. The A's showed last year that you can compete and rebuild at the same time and I think that's what they're trying to do.

They had to get somebody to put a few butts in the seats. This team right now has no marketable asset...in fact the last one we really had was Sizemore before his dick picture and repeated blown testicle injuries. Swisher is a name with local ties...they needed one. Think of him as the Dolans' Jimmy Dugan, if nothing else.

Couple things from Hoynes I saw and would make sense.

paul hoynes ‏@hoynsie
#Indians rate Nick Swisher as above average 1B, which could allow them to acquire another OF and move Reynolds to DH. #justthinking.

3h paul hoynes ‏@hoynsie
Terry Francona now has three switch-hitters for the middle of lineup: Nick Swisher, Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana. #indians.

they should move Reynolds to designated fielder. He's not a hitter but he was great at first base for the O's last summer.

I could totally see Swisher sprinting out to right field with an American Flag yelling HOOOOOOOOO at the top of his lungs.

let's just hope he doesn't acquire the coke habit Duggan had....

Ohio-born Nick Swisher excited to play for Tribe, Francona
Filed by Chris Assenheimer January 4th, 2013 in Tribe Notes.

CLEVELAND ? It?s official. Nick Swisher is coming to Cleveland. And ? get this ? he?s actually excited to be headed this way.

Beaming for nearly the entire news conference to announce his signing Thursday at Progressive Field, Swisher spoke of the many reasons he chose the Indians over others in the free-agent market ? and it wasn?t simply the $56 million he will be paid over the next four years.

According to Swisher, who spent the last four seasons under the bright lights of New York City with the Yankees, one of the biggest draws to small-market Cleveland was new manager Terry Francona. Francona sat beside Swisher, with Indians general manager Chris Antonetti on Thursday.

?You don?t bring a guy like this over here if you don?t plan on winning,? said Swisher, who was joined at the news conference by wife, actress JoAnna Garcia, and father, Steve, a former big league catcher and former minor league manager in Cleveland?s system.

?It was a very easy decision for me, especially on the manager side. I thought it was a big, big thing what Cleveland did by bringing him over here.?

Francona managed against Swisher in Boston, played for his father in Cleveland?s minor league system and has known his family since 1988.

?We needed to get better and bring the right people in,? Francona said, referring to Swisher, a career .256 hitter who has hit at least 20 home runs in each of his eight full seasons in the majors. ?When one of your best players is one of the guys that works the hardest and players look up to the most, you?re putting yourself in a good position. That?s why Swish is here. That?s why we wanted him so bad.?

?As we started our offseason, one of the things we sought to do was really fortify our lineup by bringing in an established run producer,? Antonetti said of Swisher, who batted .272 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs for the Yankees last year. ?I think in agreeing to terms with Nick, we?ve done exactly that. I?m not sure we could have found a more perfect complement to our team and to our organization.?

There were also Swisher?s ties to Ohio.

He was born in Columbus and spent some of his childhood there before returning to star at The Ohio State University.

For Swisher and the Indians, a Match Made in Ohio
By HILLEL KUTTLER
Published: January 3, 2013

CLEVELAND — Whenever Nick Swisher was stationed in right field as a visiting player, he would revel in the song played in the bottom of the eighth inning. “Hang On Sloopy” has official song status in the state of Ohio, and when it blared from the Progressive Field loudspeakers, Swisher, who has roots here, would spell O-H-I-O with his body, Yankee uniform be damned.

Little could Swisher have known that the music was only the opening bars to an eventual wedding waltz.

The Indians’ successful pursuit of Swisher was officially completed Thursday afternoon with a welcoming news conference that had everyone connected with the team grinning from start to finish. Putting on an Indians cap and a No. 33 jersey, Swisher could not contain a giddiness that he said sprang from joining a club he insisted was ready to do great things — and one located not that far from his native Columbus.

The four-year, $56 million contract he signed might have played a role in his happiness, too, Swisher conceded.

“To be able to get that was great,” he said of the deal.

Swisher leaves to attend mother's funeral
By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | 02/15/2013

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Indians held their first full-squad workout of the spring on Friday with their biggest offseason addition absent.

Nick Swisher left the team on Thursday night to attend the funeral services for his mother, Lillian Marie Malizia, who passed away after a battle with leukemia. Swisher flew back to Columbus, Ohio, and will be away from the Indians for a couple of days.

"I told him it's up to him," sid Indians manager Terry Francona, referring to when Swisher will rejoin the ballclub. "Whatever he wants to do, just let me know."

Swisher will likely reunite with the Indians on Sunday or Monday.

Cleveland signed the 32-year-old Swisher over the winter to a four-year contract worth $56 million. The deal includes a vesting option worth $14 million for the 2017 season. Last season, the first baseman hit .272 with 24 home runs, 36 doubles and 93 RBIs in 148 games for the Yankees.
