Baseball: Sophomore centerfielder Matt Angle has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. Angle went 11-for-17 from the plate during last weekend's trip to Clearwater, Florida. On Sunday, he went 5-for-6, with hits on his first five trips to the plate. Amazingly, this was the second Sunday in a row that Angle accomplished this same feat.
He also went 3-4 on stolen bases and had 15 put-outs for the four-game weekend. Angle is hitting .452 for the season.
The Buckeyes head to Bradenton, Florida next week for six games in six days. Opening day at Bill Davis Stadium is March 29 versus Toledo.

He's angling for a shot in the majors
By Steve Melewski, January 7, 2011

Since he was drafted by the Orioles in round seven out of Ohio State in 2007, outfielder Matt Angle has made steady progress through the minor leagues and, in November, he joined Joe Mahoney and Zach Britton in being added to the 40-man roster for the first time.

"It was a great day," the 25-year-old Angle said. "It's an honor and for them to think enough of me to be a part of that it's just an honor and was a great day overall.

"It's just another step in the ultimate goal of winning a World Series in the big leagues. You hope to get a shot at some point."

The left-handed batting leadoff hitter and center fielder has a career average of .288 and on-base percentage of .379 and has played for all the O's affiliates from Aberdeen on up.

His 2010 season began on a down note when he got hurt late in spring training and underwent surgery for a broken hamate bone in his right hand.

"It was a whirlwind of a year, starting with the injury on the last day of spring. We stuck with a pretty aggressive rehab. They took the bone out.

"Overall, I was pleased with the year. I would like to be a little more consistent, I felt like I was a little up and down. I wasn't very pleased with the way I finished. I take pride in finishing strong and I didn't do that, so that was a little disappointing."

After the surgery, Angle played his first game for Double-A Bowie on May 13 and, after hitting .383 in 14 games, he quickly moved to Triple-A Norfolk on May 29 where he hit .260-1-24 with 24 steals and 55 runs in 87 games.

A very good defender, Angle is also known as a player that can do the little things well, like advancing runners and he plays a fundamentally sound game.

"I try to take pride in that," he said. "In college, at Ohio State, they made sure we took pride in the small things. Make sure you take care of the fundamentals.

Angle to hit leadoff in Major League debut
By Brittany Ghiroli and Avi Zaleon / MLB.com | 07/17/11

BALTIMORE -- It didn't take long for outfielder Matt Angle -- officially recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday morning in place of the injured Vladimir Guerrero -- to make his Major League debut, as Angle found himself batting leadoff and playing left field in Sunday afternoon's series finale against Cleveland.

"I didn't want Matt's first game to be off a knuckleballer," said manager Buck Showalter, referring to Monday's Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield. " don't want him to sit two days. Kind of looking in the future a little bit."

Angle, who got the news Saturday night from Triple-A manager Gary Allenson, is typically a center fielder, but he has gotten recent action in left field and said he tried not to put too much stock into the rumblings the last few days that he could get promoted.

"You try not to get too high or too low either way," said the 25-year-old Angle, who anticipated having his wife, mother, cousin and uncle in attendance at Camden Yards Sunday afternoon.

"I'm definitely excited, I think it will [all hit me] come first pitch, once you are on the field and doing things like that."

A seventh-round pick in 2007's First-Year Player Draft, Angle started the season slow but has come on as of late, hitting .380 in his last 16 games with Norfolk. He was joined Sunday by Tides' teammate Troy Patton, a left-handed reliever who will add length to an Orioles bullpen in a state of flux. Patton has been up several times this season as insurance, but has made just one appearance in May, allowing two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Luke Scott (right labrum tear) is back from the disabled list after hitting two homers and having 6 RBI for Double-A Bowie on Thursday. He said he will test the shoulder for the next 3 to 5 days and if he feels he can be productive, he will play through the injury. If he can?t, he will be shut down for the season and rest and rehab the shoulder or have surgery. Showalter said he is on board with that plan.

To make room for Scott, the Orioles demoted outfielder Matt Angle to Triple-A Norfolk. Angle was hitless in seven at-bats, but Showalter liked what he saw defensively from the speedy Angle. The manager said he expects Angle will be back in the big again.

Orioles rookie Angle still looking for 1st hit
By David Ginsburg, AP Sports Writer

BALTIMORE ? There's only one thing missing from Matt Angle's unforgettable first week in the major leagues: a base hit.

Angle made his debut Sunday with the Baltimore Orioles, batting leadoff and playing left field against Cleveland only hours after being summoned from Triple-A Norfolk. His wife, mom, uncle and cousin drove from Ohio to cheer him on at Camden Yards.

Angle grounded out three straight times before drawing a four-pitch walk.

His next opportunity came Tuesday, when he went 0 for 4 against Boston. He sat out Wednesday's game, and the Orioles were off Thursday.

So, although his batting average will remain at .000 at least until Friday, Angle isn't panicking. He waited years for a chance to play in the majors, and if it takes a while before he gets his first hit, so be it.

"Hopefully, it will come soon," the 25-year-old said. "But at the same time, you're still trying to have good at-bats and try not to get caught up in just getting the first hit. The longer it takes, I'm sure the more pressure it will be."

Only his wife, Jaclyn, remains in Baltimore. The rest of his caravan had to return to Columbus.

None of them is getting impatient. Yet.

"We're just trying to stay positive and take it day by day," Jaclyn said. "It's been exciting to be here, watching him do something he's worked forever for. I'm proud of him."

After a successful career at Ohio State, Angle was selected by Baltimore in the seventh round of the 2007 amateur draft. As he worked his way through Baltimore's minor league system, the fleet-footed contact hitter longed for the day when he could slip on a uniform in a big league clubhouse, patrol the outfield and take part in a victory.

Determining roles for Angle and Hunter
September 17, 2011
by Roch Kubatko

Matt Angle didn't have a hit last night in the Orioles' 8-3 victory over the Angels, but he laid down a nice sacrifice bunt in the third inning and reached on an error and scored in the fifth. He also made a nice leaping catch near the fence to rob Howie Kendrick in the top of the first.

Angle is part of the new go-go Orioles, who have been successful on 19 of their last 21 stolen base attempts since Aug. 26. Eight difference players have recorded steals during that stretch, including Angle, Robert Andino, Chris Davis, Kyle Hudson, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Nolan Reimold and Mark Reynolds.

"I actually think Matt is a better baserunner than he is a speed guy," manager Buck Showalter said. "He has above-average speed, but he's not just a burner. He runs the bases real well. The speed he has really plays well because he knows how to run the bases. And he also gives us an above-average defender in left field and probably as accurate an arm as you'll see - a top of the hop one-hop guy who will throw out people he's supposed to throw out."

Angle is making a push to serve as a backup outfielder in 2012. I don't think he hits for enough power to be considered for the left field job, and his true value lies in his ability to move around the outfield - he went from left to center after Jones was scratched - serve as a late-inning defensive replacement and steal a base.

"The things he brings, as long as he stays true to who he is and doesn't try to get big at the plate and he makes them defend him around the diamond... He's had some good swings and he also keeps us from having to use J.J. (Hardy) in the leadoff spot. So we'll see where it takes us and see if he takes advantage of the opportunity," Showalter said.

Taking the right Angle
September 24, 2011
by Roch Kubatko

I haven't changed my opinion that Matt Angle doesn't hit for enough power to be the regular left fielder next season, but I'll tip my cap to him after his leadoff home run tonight.

I don't wear caps, but I'll purchase one for the sole purpose of tipping it.

Angle had four homers in 424 at-bats at Triple-A Norfolk this summer. He hadn't hit one in the majors in his first 69 at-bats. And he chose 24-game winner Justin Verlander to be his first victim.

Don't try to make sense of it.

The Orioles want Matt Angle to spend about a week working out at second base in their instructional league in Sarasota.

He'll do whatever they tell him.

"I played it when I was younger and I've taken ground balls there a few times during the season. I'll just go down there and see what happens," Angle said.

"The plan is to go to Florida for a week and work with Bobby Dickerson and (Mike) Bordick and get a lot of work in and see where I go from there. If that's what needs to be done to stay in the big leagues and help the team win, that's what I need to do. We'll see after next week and get a feel for it from there.

"I've been told my whole life, the more positions you play and the more things you can do, the better opportunities you'll have."

Angle stopped by the equipment room to get a protective cup.

"I thought that was a real intelligent move," manager Buck Showalter said.

Bordick talks about Angle and Machado
October 10, 2011
by Roch Kubatko

The fall instructional league ended Saturday, along with Matt Angle's crash course on playing second base.

Angle is a plus defender in the outfield, so the Orioles aren't looking to change his position. They just want to expand the ones he can handle.

You know how it goes. Angle isn't projected as a regular in left field. His value increases if he can play multiple positions. And second base isn't exactly secured, considering that Brian Roberts still comes down with occasional headaches and there's no way to be sure whether he'll be healthy enough to reclaim the starting job next season.

Former shortstop Mike Bordick and minor league infield coordinator Bobby Dickerson worked with Angle in Sarasota. Bordick referred to it as a "look-and-see thing."

"Obviously, he hasn't played second base and we're just trying to teach him that position and see how he can apply the stuff we're teaching him," Bordick said. "He's doing a really good job. He's working really hard, and I don't think that was ever a question. With his work ethic, you know he'd put everything he's got into it. We just wanted to see what he can do and if it's a possibility."

So he's not totally lost out there?

"He's not totally lost at all," Bordick said. "There's just a lot going on in the infield, as far as footwork and everything else. It's not just catching ground balls. It's getting his legs in shape to catch ground balls. If he takes 50 ground balls, he'll definitely be sore and feel it the next day. You have to kind of get in shape for that.

"We'll see what we've got, if he's able to do that. It could help his career if he's able to play other positions."

Matt Angle designated for assignment
February 10, 2012
by Roch Kubatko

Outfielder Matt Angle was designated for assignment today to make room for reliever Luis Ayala on the 40-man roster.

Angle, 26, batted .271/.347/.344 in 108 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2011 before joining the Orioles for 31 games and hitting .193/.293/.266 with four doubles, one homer - off Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - seven RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Angle and Kyle Hudson were similar-type outfielders. Now there's a chance that neither player will be in the organization this year.

Matt Angle is headed to the Dodgers
February 23, 2012
by Steve Melewski

Outfielder Matt Angle, who was drafted by the Orioles in round seven out of Ohio State in 2007 and made his major league debut last year, is now headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers, an Orioles official confirmed this afternoon.

Angle was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Feb. 10 when the club signed Luis Ayala and today he has been claimed by Los Angeles on waivers.

In 31 games last year, Angle hit .177 with one homer, seven RBIs, 12 runs and 11 stolen bases in 12 chances. He hit his first major league homer off Detroit's Justin Verlander on September 24.

Angle played at every stop in the O's farm system between Aberdeen and Norfolk before making his big league debut last July 17 against Cleveland. He had a career minor league on-base percentage of .372 as a leadoff hitter in the minors.

At Triple-A last season, the 26-year-old Angle hit .271 with four homers, 33 RBIs, a .347 on-base percentage and stole 27-of-30 bases for the Tides. He hit .340 during June and July.

He figured to have a chance to make this year's Orioles' opening day roster but the club signed outfielders Jai Miller and Endy Chavez over the winter and then he was designated for assignment leading to today's news that he is headed to the Dodgers.

Angle says thanks on his way out of town
February 24, 2012
Steve Melewski

Matt Angle is not the kind of guy that would likely ever publicly say anything negative about his organization or teammates, but when he had praise for the Orioles on his way out of the organization Thursday afternoon, it sure sounded heartfelt and sincere.

"I felt like I had great coaches and great people that actually cared about (me) all along the way," Angle said by phone from Ohio yesterday. "That is from the training staff to the on-field coaches to your strength and conditioning. I felt that everyone treated me fairly within the organization and I didn't have a bad experience with any coach or anyone in development."

Until he was claimed via waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, the Orioles were the only major league organization Angle had ever known. They drafted him in round seven out of Ohio State in 2007. After playing in 532 minor league games, at every stop between short-season Single-A Aberdeen and Triple-A Norfolk, Angle made his big league debut last July.

The news that he was leaving one team for another was still very fresh when we spoke yesterday.

"First it was an exciting thing, knowing you will have a new opportunity from a team that wanted you and that claimed you," he said. "But this will be a completely different environment. I will be leaving a lot of people I have known, but I'm excited to be a Dodger."

Angle had five seasons with the Orioles and took time to thank the organization for bringing him to the majors and those in the minors that helped him along the way.
