J.B. Shuck hit his first career home run on Monday.

J.B. Shuck hit his first career home run tonight for the Los Angeles Angels against the Texas Rangers. But that's not the only reason why Shuck?s homer was unique.

Earlier this season, on June 5 against the Chicago Cubs, Shuck thought he had hit his first career home run in the second inning off then-Cubs pitcher Matt Garza. He crushed a ball down the right-field line into the stands. He circled the bases and celebrated with teammates in the dugout for what would have been his first career homer.

However, the Cubs complained to the umpires that the ball was foul. The umpires subsequently reviewed the play and ultimately overturned the call, correctly discovering it was indeed a foul ball.

Shuck still hadn?t hit a home run in his career ?- until Monday, 54 days later. He hit his first career homer in the fifth inning off none other than -- Matt Garza.

CLEVELAND J.B. Shucks basketball prowess is no longer a secret inside the Los Angeles Angels clubhouse.

A reporter, trying to instigate a game of one-on-one between the 2005 Galion High School grad and God?s gift to sabermetricians, Mike Trout, got the dialogue moving in that direction before Friday night?s game with the Indians at Progressive Field.

As Shuck was reminded of his MVP exploits in the ?05 News Journal All-Star Basketball Classic, Trout, one locker over, was drawn into the conversation.

So what did he think of Jack Burdett Shuck III making a then-record seven three-pointers in the game?

?What was he ... 7 of 30?? Trout cracked.

Actually, 7 of 13 ? 6 of 8 in the second half when Shuck scored 24 of his 31 points to lead the South from 19 down to a 118-106 victory.

?Everyone gets lucky once in awhile,? said Trout, not impressed.

Sounds like game on.

?He wouldn?t beat me,? said Trout, who?s built like someone who could take a charge from LeBron ? and then help LeBron to his feet, grinning.

?Oh, man,? Shuck said, ?I?d just shoot ?threes? in your face.?

The back-and-forth pretty much died there and, unfortunately, will probably never reach the gym.

?Everybody in here is pretty competitive, so it would get pretty rowdy on the basketball court,? said Shuck, who had kept that part of his background quiet. ?It?s probably better we stay away from it.?

    General Manager Jerry Dipoto has been heavily criticized for his winter pitching moves that didn't pan out, Ryan Madson, Joe Blanton, Tommy Hanson and Sean Burnett providing little or no contributions to the Angels this season.

    But at least one under-the-radar acquisition, the signing of J.B. Shuck to a minor league deal last November, has paid huge dividends, the outfielder emerging as a legitimate American League rookie-of-the-year candidate with a solid all-around season that few saw coming in April.

    "At the beginning of the season, he would have been an unlikely pick for rookie of the year," Manager Mike Scioscia said before Tuesday night's 7-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Angel Stadium. "But seeing him every day, he just does so many things to help us."

J.B. Shuck finishes 5th in Rookie of the Year race

J.B. Shuck finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year race, appearing on just two of the 30 ballots submitted by two writers from each city in the league.

Shuck got a second-place vote from Joe Haakenson, a former Angels beat writer who is now an honorary member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, and a third-place vote from Register columnist Jeff Miller. Full voting details are on the BBWAA web site.

JB Shuck aims to build on record-tying Marlins debut

As a virtuoso debut that nobody expected, the gala that JB Shuck staged Friday at Marlins Park was a smash hit — four to be exact.

With a triple and three singles, the veteran outfielder not only provided the impetus for a 7-2 Miami win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he joined elite company with three others who had four hits in their first game as Marlins.

Jeff Conine did so in the franchise’s inaugural game in 1993. Carlos Delgado (2005) and Emilio Bonifacio (2009) matched the feat.

“That’s awesome,” Shuck said. “Actually got to play with [Bonifacio]. If you can get your name in that group I’ll take it. That’s a great group of guys.”


The 30-year-old Shuck offers the experience of 364 games in the major leagues to a club relying heavily on youth. He finished fifth in the voting for American League Rookie of the Year in 2013 when he batted .293 in 129 games with the Angels.

"JB is a guy who has been around more, and he's not as wide-eyed as a young player who is still trying to find his way," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.

The experience was evident when Shuck scored from second on Chad Wallach’s sacrifice bunt when the catcher and pitcher both pursued the ball along the first-base line and left the plate unguarded. Shuck read the situation as he rounded third and scored easily.

The four hits Friday raised his career average three points to .254 in 999 at-bats.

This is Shuck’s fifth big-league team since 2011, but Friday was his first game in the majors since 2016 with the Chicago White Sox.

“Keep grinding,” Shuck said of how he approached getting back onto a big-league roster. “The last couple years I tried to do too much. So this offseason I really worked on getting back to my game, just not doing too much, trying to put together good at-bats.

“When I got here, the hitting group is great for me. They really helped me out getting back to doing what I do. And I was ready for the season.”
Mattingly said Shuck received serious consideration to start the season with the Marlins after he batted .364 in spring training as a non-roster invitee.

But decisions are often dictated by openings on the 40-man roster. So Shuck found himself starting out wth New Orleans until the call came Thursday while the Baby Cakes were playing at Colorado Springs.

"I just came into camp trying to prove I could play up here," Shuck said. "In the beginning of the year, they wanted to go in a different direction. I didn't let it bother me. It's part of the game. I just went down and got my work in and just hoped I'd be ready if I got a chance.

The smile he flashed after the fourth hit and the celebratory shaving cream in his hair late Friday attested to a memorable beginning in Miami to build on.

Signed with Pirates

The Pirates announced Thursday evening that they’ve signed outfielder J.B. Shuck to a minor league contract with an invite to Major League Spring Training. Pittsburgh also announced its previously reported minor league deal with righty Brandon Maurer.

Shuck, 31, has bounced all over the league since being a sixth-round pick of the Astros back in 2008, spending time at the MLB level with the ’Stros, Angels, White Sox, Indians and, most recently, the Marlins. The journeyman is a lifetime .244/.294/.316 hitter with eight homers, 39 doubles, nine triples and 24 steals in 1232 Major League plate appearances. He spent the 2018 campaign in the Marlins organization and tallied 142 plate appearances at the big league level, hitting .192/.255/.231.

While he’s never found much in the way of big league success, Shuck has a solid track record in Triple-A and figures to head there if he doesn’t break camp with the Bucs. He’s a .294/.367/.388 hitter in parts of eight Triple-A campaigns (2244 PAs) and has ample experience at all three outfield positions, though he’s spent much more time in center (3097 innings) and in left (4083 innings) than in right (1580 innings).

Shuck went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Thursday's game against the Yankees.

Shuck belted his first homer of the spring, a two-run shot that went sailing over the right-field fence in the second inning. He's 2-for-9 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI so far as a non-roster invitee.
