Brian Hartline catches a pass for the Miami Dolphins. The former GlenOak and Ohio State wide receiver has started to jell as a professional this season.

Dan Dierdorf, who played at Glenwood High School before it merged with Oakwood and became GlenOak, will analyze the Browns-Dolphins game for the CBS telecast from Miami. Brian Hartline, who played at GlenOak four decades later, is the Dolphins? hottest receiver.

Who saw the Hartline part coming?

What was in Hartline?s head last year? Why would any wide receiver declare early for the draft coming off a skimpy 21 catches for the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes?

Here?s why:

He can think. He thinks he can play. And he?s right.

?That Hartline kid is a hell of a player,? Browns Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan said Friday. ?He?s quick. He beat Nnamdi (Asomugha) three times last week.

?I guess he?s drawn so many penalties because (defenders) look out there and maybe don?t think he?s all that ... but this kid is a player.?

Asomugha became a state-of-the-art cornerback under Ryan in Oakland. Facing the Dolphins last Sunday, Asomugha grabbed Hartline for a holding penalty that helped Miami keep moving ? as did Hartline?s four catches for 75 yards ? toward a 33-17 win.

?The kid is relentless,? Ryan said. ?All he does is compete.

?He fights for the football. He goes deep and is up there fighting the guy to get it. I admire the way the guy plays.?

Miami Dolphins v Oakland Raiders

If the Miami Dolphins are going to to beat the Browns, they?ll have to do it without two of their top receivers.

Brandon Marshall was inactive with a hamstring injury and the team has now lost Brian Hartline as well. Hartline hurt his finger during Sunday?s game and will not return to action in Miami. That leaves the team with Davone Bess, Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore at wide receiver for the rest of a game that they tied at 10 with just over 10 min

Miami Dolphins' Brian Hartline undergoes procedure on hand; not ruled out for year yet

Even if the Dolphins get wide receiver Brandon Marshall back into the mix this week, it is very possible they will be without another top producer in the passing game against the Jets.

Wide receiver Brian Hartline underwent a procedure Tuesday to repair a hand injury suffered during Sunday's loss, a source said. The team is not yet ruling him out for the rest of the season, another source added.

Miami will instead wait until the performing doctor evaluates how Hartline responds to the procedure before making a decision about whether to shelf him for the rest of the season.

Hartline's departure would be another blow to a team that has faced plenty of them. His recent production makes the potential of this one particularly harsh. In the four games before Sunday, he caught 18 passes for 328 yards.

He has also been Miami's big-play threat. Aside from the game against the Browns, when he was wide open on an underthrown pass, he has caught at least one pass for 24 yards or more in every game since Oct. 24.

Hartline's absence, specifically in the short term, would put even more pressure to get wide receiver Brandon Marshall back into the mix against the Jets. Marshall, who has missed each of the last two games, was expected to play against the Browns before coach Tony Sparano decided he wasn't yet ready for action.

It's hard to imagine Miami sidelining him for another week, especially given the struggles of the wide receiving corps once Hartline and Marshall were both out of Sunday's loss to the Browns.

Without Hartline, wide receivers Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore would each get continued chances to shine during their rookie seasons.

Dolphins WR Hartline, T Carey to miss Jets game

NEW YORK ? Miami Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline and tackle Vernon Carey have been ruled out of Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

Hartline hurt a finger on his left hand during last week's loss to Cleveland, and Carey has been nursing a knee injury. Neither practiced this week. Carey had started 87 consecutive games.

Dolphins WR Brian Hartline goes on Injured Reserve with finger injury

Brian Hartline developed into the Dolphins? best deep-play threat in 2010, but his promising season is now over thanks to a finger injury.

Hartline, who leads the Dolphins with a 14.3 yards-per-catch average and is third with 615 receiving yards, was placed on season-ending Injured Reserve on Saturday after hurting his finger six days ago against the Browns.

Hartline injured a finger on his left hand in the second quarter while blocking linebacker Matt Roth. Hartline immediately squeezed his hand and jogged off the field, but he returned for two full series in the third quarter before ending his day. Hartline reportedly had surgery on Tuesday and was not immediately ruled out for the season. He finishes the year with 43 catches for 615 yards and one touchdown in 12 games.
