Ohio State building all-time wide receiver room with Brian Hartline's recruiting

Ohio State continues to build on what someday might be considered the greatest wide receiver room of all time.

It's more than hype or even hyperbole. It's a numbers game at this point.

The Buckeyes secured commitments from two of the top three receivers in 247Sports.com's recruiting rankings for the 2023 class. Five-star receiver Carnell Tate (IMG Academy, Bradenton, Fla.) committed on Monday. Fellow five-star receiver Brandon Innis (American Heritage, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) followed with a commitment on Tuesday.

Wide receivers coach Brian Hartline continues to build on a reputation as one of college football's best recruiters under coach Ryan Day; a perception that is going to swell with each cycle. The Buckeyes are challenging – and perhaps surpassing – Alabama for the title of “WRU” in the College Football Playoff era.

But seriously, can we talk about the greatest wide receiver room of all time? What about Miami with Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss? What about Alabama – which has produced six first-round receivers since 2018?

Ohio State is in position to match – or perhaps surpass that now. Hartline's recruiting track record is off the charts since he took the receiver coach job in 2018. Look at the recruits at the position with four-star ratings or better since:

Ohio State WR recruits since 2019
PLAYER YEAR STARS
Garrett Wilson* 2019 5
Jameson Williams* (transferred to Alabama) 2019 4
Julian Fleming 2020 5
Jaxon Smith-Njigba 2020 5
Gee Scott Jr. 2020 4
Emeka Egbuka 2021 5
Marvin Harrison Jr. 2021 4
Jayden Ballard 2021 4
Kyion Graves 2022 4
Caleb Burton 2022 4
Carnell Tate 2023 5
Brandon Innis 2023 5
*Denotes first-round NFL Pick

That doesn't count Chris Olave, a three-star recruit from the class of 2018. The absurdity of the talent is going to show out over the next few NFL Drafts. Wilson and Olave were first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Smith-Njigba is projected to be a first-round pick in 2023 according to Sporting News' initial mock draft, and Harrison Jr. and Egbuka could be tandem first-round picks in 2024 if they continue to develop.

That's not even counting the development of Fleming, Ballard, Grayes and Burton before Tate and Innis arrive. Even with attrition and transfers, you can count on at least one or two of those receivers to develop into a first-round pick, too.

That picture just needs a frame and signed for the wall. Few pictures at the time just say "stud" like this picture. A Katzenmoyer pic comes to mind and i'm sure there are others but he just seems so relaxed like he's the shit and nobody's gonna change that.

It is a groundbreaking change from the way that the team functioned just over a decade ago. In 2008, Ohio State quarterbacks threw for 17 touchdowns. In 2021, C.J. Stroud had that many by the second week of October, and he'd finish with 44 of Ohio State's 46 touchdown passes.

At last, after a collegiate career that ended in a disappointing fashion while playing in a nonsensical offensive system, Brian Hartline has his revenge. His head coach is an offensive mastermind that loves airing it out, he has an astronomically talented wide receiver room (which includes possibly the best receiver in the country), and he keeps pulling in the best high school receiver talent in the country.

But you won’t find Hartline beating his chest about his recruiting prowess or accolades. Hartline believes the best approach to landing top-tier recruits is by being genuine and letting the prospects see what he and the school have to offer.

“I think it probably always starts with being yourself,” Hartline said of his recruiting approach. “I think at the end of the day, you know, I don't want to trick anybody into doing anything … I don't want them to think I'm somebody I'm not. And those that appreciate that will pick Ohio State, the Buckeyes, our quarterbacks, our offense and our receiver room and we'll go down that road.

“So being true to yourself, I think is really, really important. It's really easy to gear yourself to others because you have a job you want to get done. And you just got to make sure you're just being true to yourself.”

How Hartline secures top talent in his wide receiver room year in and year out isn’t an exact science. But Hartline said Ohio State has a system for getting recruits to initially visit Columbus and what topics the coaching staff needs to cover on a prospect’s first, second and third visits to campus.

The first time a prospect and their family visit OSU, Hartline said he goes out of his way to ensure both parties understand what Ohio State is about and what he himself is about, which he hopes will give them a feeling of how he and OSU’s wide receiver room operate. Beyond that, the conversation Hartline has with each individual prospect varies, so there’s no specific blueprint Hartline follows in recruiting.

“There's no narrative being spun here,” Hartline said. “It's like trying to coach every kid the same way. You shouldn't do that. You can be fair, but it's not going to be the same. Everyone's different. Everyone has different needs. Everyone has different focuses. So your ability to connect with those and identify those, I think kind of puts you on your right path.”
