OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (National Champion, HC at USF, Buckeye OC for this postseason)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

following fellow Ohio boy Alex Golesh at USF. Trying to be OSU south apparently...
USF perfect place for a young HC to grow. Pool of FL talent to grab, and attractive to transfers. Decent money connections. No pressure to win a championship, but have the ability to beat a bigger program.

If Day bolts to the NFL, USF is good training ground.

There is nothing wrong for a person wanting to move up the ladder in his chosen career field. He definitely deserves a chance to be a head coach. You hate to see him go; but you know it was inevitable to happen sometime.

Honestly, having been stationed in Tampa, I think if he’s going to take the step it should be somewhere in Florida. He would really do well at a place like USF, FAU, or UCF. The vibe fits him and he has very strong South Florida and Midwest recruiting connections. There are little expectations and ability to make a huge splash.

That said - Bjork needs to give the man a blank check.

Something in me saw this coming. Tampa is a perfect fit.

I hate to see him go, he will be missed. As a now 40-year-old with 2 young kids, I get it. A 20-year-old me would have been upset but you gotta let the kid go and learn. You gotta let him use his wings, cut his teeth, and whatever other colloquialism you can insert. He’ll be back in a few years when Day is ready to retire. Ohio State has done an incredible job in solidifying replacements with the correct man for the job.

We’re ironically moving back to the Tampa (Sarasota) area next summer and I definitely plan on getting USF season tickets for me and my 7 year old son. He’s fallen in love with the Buckeyes despite living in Maine most his life. Now I get to take him to games led by an Ohio State legend in the city he was born. Selfishly I’m happy on his landing spot.

Should've been more clear. When I asked about a backup plan, I meant as THE position coach. How do we replace that?
Just sayin: It doesn't necessarily address the position coach vacancy; however, when I read this (article below), the first thing I thought of was...sounds like an offensive version of Matt Patricia...if Penn State doesn't hire him as head coach... maybe Day should consider talking to him about the Ohio State OC position.

Nick Saban urges Penn St. to hire Brian Daboll

Daboll is a long-time NFL mind. He's coached the Giants for the better part of the 2020s and before that was the offensive coordinator at Buffalo who first struck gold with a Josh Allen offense. He also worked under Bill Belichick in New England way back when and, just before joining Buffalo, spent a stint with Alabama and Nick Saban.

It's no wonder the Hall of Fame coach endorsed Daboll as a Nittany Lion when he first caught wind of the mutual interest. Here he was on the Pat McAfee Show discussing Daboll:

"He's a very good coach, he's a bright guy, he's a good recruiter, he relates well to the players, he's a good teacher, he's got a good offensive mind, he'll be able to put a good staff together," Saban listed off. "I think that would be an outstanding hire," the legendary coach added of a theoretical Brian Daboll fit at Penn State.
