OC Arthur Smith (Official Thread)

I think promoting Hartline was a mistake - he wasn’t a very good OC, the duel responsibilities made him a worse WR coach, and the entire point was to keep him around longer and he left after one year anyway.
I agree. Part of me wonders about his exit to South Florida.

I always thought he’d land at a school like Minnesota, South Carolina, Stanford, or TCU kind of level.

Going to South Florida seems like if he had the option to he should’ve stayed until he got a mid level power four job.

I’m guessing here but wouldn’t be surprised if everyone knew it wasn’t working.

Anyway, I think this hire will work out but I have no expectations. Certainly nothing where I think he’s terrible.

On top of everything else, Hartline’s recruiting dominance was basically over because of NIL, he can’t stack 3-4 #1 WRs anymore because you can’t pay them all #1 money no matter how good you are at recruiting.

South Florida was actually a really likely Job for him. They invest funds he knows the area from his time in the league at Miami. He knows how to recruit the area

I wonder if he could find a way to get FedEx to donate NIL funds for those efforts
They are already giving NIL money to Memphis.

FedEx pledges $25M over 5 years to NIL program at Memphis

FedEx on Friday pledged $25 million over the next five years to be used in sponsorship deals with University of Memphis athletes, a huge boost for the school's name, image and likeness compensation efforts.

The Memphis-based shipping giant said the program will initially focus on football, men's and women's basketball and other women's sports. The deal was facilitated by Altius Sports Partners, a company that works with dozens of schools on NIL activities.

The deal is for $5 million per year, a significant sum for a school that does not play in a wealthy power conference. The Tigers compete in the American Athletic Conference.

FedEx headquarters. They own the city.

Not exactly a sparkling jewel in the crown of shit to own. Beale St used to be a lot of fun.

As far as our new OC goes, let's just wait and see. I feel like coordinators (and all coaches really) get too much credit when it's good and too much blame when it's bad. The talent level you have to work with has a lot to do with how "good" of a coach you are.

He has elite talent at his disposal and doesn't have to recruit, just draw plays and "coach ball".

We shall see.

It's hard to believe a National Championship-winning Head Coach of a college football team that wants to attract players who dream of playing in the NFL would dare to higher former successful coordinators at the NFL level and now make them the Head Coaches of their respective sides of the ball at the collegiate level.

Sarcasm font.
Successful coordinators, or Arthur Smith?

Re: His father is FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith.

Just sayin': I'll go out on a limb here and say he didn't accept the Ohio State job because of the money and/or it wasn't because he couldn't get a job somewhere in the NFL. He legitimately wanted to be here and that is definitely a positive.
SIAP, just catching up after a couple of days dooms-day prepping here in NC.

I think I saw that he has a young family (similar to Matt P). If this works out, this could be long term. I know nothing really about this guy. Ultimately, I see him as being brought in to run Ryan Day’s offense and add a strong(er) run game back ground à la Chip. Not to say they are / are not on the same level… we’ll see… but the last time Ryan brought in an OC who is mature and known for a solid run game it worked out, right until he took an NFL gig.

Holding judgment for now, but I can see how the pieces fit together.
