OBSERVATIONS FROM THE BARCALOUNGER - MSU

I was at the game as well, and sometimes, once in a while, there was a "swirl", but basically the wind was coming out of the southeast, and so we did in fact kick off with the wind several times and did not get it in the end zone.
It was not uncommon to see the flags on either end of the field flapping towards each other. The wind was quite hard to predict...

Oh8ch,

I have to disagree with you about the kickoffs being weak.

I was at the game and would venture to say that the wind was blowing 15-20 mph and it swirled and changed directions often.

I think he was referring to the coverage more than anything.

Maybe this is a task for DBB or someone who has access to all these crazy numbers, but this year, compared to last year, how often have we passed on 3rd and short?

In compiling the numbers for Troy's passing-by-down, I have not noticed an instance of a pass on 3rd and short. That is precisely the kind of tendency that JT likes to establish so that he can break it when he needs to.

I guess I have to defend myself because of my predictability line.

Running two ends around make them unpredictable?
When Beanie is in on third and short, who is getting the ball?
Those plays that Pittman has been bouncing outside are they by design or is it because the original hole was not there?
Throwing one or two deep balls a game to Ginn does that make the offense unpredictable?
I said predictable at times. I didn't say this was 2004. JT gets a lead and goes conservative and predictable (at times).

I am just as big a fan of JT as the next guy. It doesn't mean I have to drink the entire gallon of Kool Aid.

I took it as a criticism of the kickers.

Both, really. I was disapointed we only made the end zone on one of seven kickoffs, but more disapointed that MSU averaged 22 yards on each of 6 returns In thinking it over I guess 22 yards isn't so much, I am just spoiled by all the touch backs.

I agree with you there. The wind was knocking the ball down pretty quick though.

Also, doesn't Pettrey normally kick off and I believe Pretorius was kicking off Saturday.

I could be wrong though.

Great read, Oh8ch.

I agree completely about savoring every moment of this season. It has a different feel to than 2002. In '02, though we were winning every game, it wasn't until the other undefeateds started losing that I realized we had a serious opportunity at the Fiesta Bowl. This year, I'm enjoying the ride. These games are a thing of beauty.

Nothing against Boeckamn, Schoenhoft, or Henton, but they won't have the presense in the pocket that Smith has next year. They may near the end, but they'll need experience. I know as I watch Troy Smith play that I'm watching Ohio State football history unfold before my eyes. While I don't want this season to end, I'm still looking forward to seeing, "10 Smith" next to the other Heisman winnners in the Shoe.

Predictable? 5 different players scored TD's...

I have bad feelings about this game. But don't let that throw anyone off their feed. I had very bad feelings about our visit to Austin and I almost didn't go to Tempe for the NC game in 2002 because I didn't believe we had a serious chance to win. So despite what my wife and my psychiatrist keep telling me I do not trust my feelings.
Three reasons why this won't be anything like 1969:
1. Jim Tressel
2. The Shoe
3. Troy Smith

14. NEGATIVE STAT OF THE WEEK

Seven kick offs with an average net yards of 37.1. Weak. Wind or not.
I was mad that Tressel kept letting Pretorious kick off, because he wasn't getting distance in either direction. But, I now think he let Pretorious kickoff to get him some PT seeing as Pettrey is now solidly our place kicker, and that he knew that MSU had no chance of winning even with some big returns.
