MEANINGFUL DISTINCTIONS
There is a difference between a team that is not playing well and a team that is not winning. IMO OSU has lost two games in which they played well. They have also won two games in which they played poorly. (The other was SDSU.)
B-FREAKIN-ZAR
Mark this date down. You will never again see a game where the Home team runs 41 offensive plays to the visitors 87, fumbles 6 times and loses 4, gives up 456 yards Total Offense - and wins.
A game where you have less TOP than your opponent in every quarter and in each of the first three quarters hold the ball for less than 5 minutes.
A game where your opponent has 456 total yards and gets sacked 12 times (add those yards back into the total and MSU has 514 total yards).
You may never see a game where you have 386 yards without a single sustained drive. A game where your longest drive was six plays and your only visit to the red zone was when you started the drive in the red zone.
You may never see a game were the home team has 386 yards and precisely HALF came on only four plays.
Clearly we figured out how to exploit a weakness in our opponent. We did not make the case that we have solved our offensive woes.
OFFENSIVE EXECUTION
I don’t know who they shot at the half, but it did seem to help a little.
TRIVIA QUESTIONS
How many players touched the ball offensively for OSU today?
Answer. Four.
How many players lost fumbles for OSU today?
Answer: The same four.
What was the difference in distance between Trapasso’s first two punts?
Answer: 50 yards.
DEFENDING THE D
Despite all the yardage and points allowed you have to admit our D was on the field a long time and it was not all their doing. MSU had stretches where they ran 13, 12, 21, and 11 straight plays. (I am cheating a bit here, because two of those stretches were extended by OSU fumbles on returns and one of those even longer by halftime. But 21 plays without taking a snap is a long time no matter how you slice it.)
On the other hand - MSU had precisely one three-and-out today and that was on the next to last drive of the game. MSU ran 87 plays and threw the ball all over the field – but we could not get a turnover. Our woeful turnover margin took a very serious hit today.
LB TACKLES
19 for Hawk. 40 total among Hawk, Carpenter, and Schlegel – with Carp getting 4 sacks.
Only one way your LBs get that many tackles – the other team has to be moving the chains.
But good lord, there are some MSU players who are still sitting in the whirlpool. AJ was laying them out all day long.
MISCELLANEOUS YARDS
According to the official stats OSU had 83 miscellaneous yards today. Neither OSU nor any of its opponent has had a single miscellaneous yard in any previous game this season.
I have no idea what a miscellaneous yard is.
NEW WRINKLES
Second possession of the game. Pittman lines up behind Johnson in the I. Obvious running play. They throw deep to Holmes and he is wide open – 39 yard gain. Did you see that? Wasn’t that cool? Want to see it again?
Me too.
How about the screen to Pittman that went for 21 yards? Wasn’t that cool? Want to see it again?
We’ll see.
KUDOS TO STANTON
He played a hell of a game, although he may be the most immobile quarterback I have seen in some time. Just how does a QB get back up after his twelfth sack?
NACHOS
They were particularly tasty today. I like mine with lots of hot peppers.
D’ANDREA AND FROST
Good to see D’Animal back even if only on special teams.
Lots of speculation about Frost of late. He was out there a lot today.
BLOCK O
They suck. The only O-H-I-O cheer of the game didn’t come till the second half. Then they start a tidal wave when we were behind. I hate that nonsense when we are behind.
JAVON RINGER
I really liked the way he looked today. But let’s be honest. If he was a Buckeye we would have no basis to say whether we liked him or not.
