Observations from C Deck (OSU-Texas)

1. Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Pain. Lots of pain.

2. Wow!

What a wonderful football game.

I believe I am fortunate to be a college football fan first and an OSU fan second. I know when I have seen a great football game, and I saw one tonight. For those who feel they went away from this game with nothing I feel sorry for you. Hopefully tomorrow will bring some perspective. It was what college football is all about.

3. The First – very brief - game

First, let me qualify my observations for a game like this. I tend to get so focused on outcomes of plays that I don’t always see what player did what, and tonight you certainly couldn’t hear much from the PA.

That said, the first two series by each side were an OSU nightmare – reminiscent of the Fiesta Bowl. The Texas lines – particularly their O-Line - dominated. Thought for sure it was going to be a very long night. But I should have known better.

There were also a lot of OSU fans hollering for a spy on Young during those drives. Maybe someone who understands this game better than I can help me out, but what is the point of a spy when you the other team is dominating the blocks and you can’t make the tackle?

4. The Second – much longer - Game

Classic Tressel Ball. Made adjustments and slowed, then stopped, the Texas O. Moved the ball much better than I thought we would. Got conservative in the red zone, then got so conservative we didn’t get to the red zone. But with the lead that was OK. Just keep them bottled up and keep swapping punts. But we underestimated Young, and we made too many mistakes – which have no place in Tressel Ball.

5. Red Zone

After two punts we scored on 6 consecutive possessions. You can net 42 points from a performance like that. We got 22. 26 would have won the game. Makes me insane.

6. What if?

There are so many single plays where we can argue ‘what if?’

There are no “what if’s”. You make mistakes – under pressure or not - it is your team that makes the mistakes and that is part of who you are.

7. Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes
The classic adage is that a team makes its greatest improvement between game one and game two.

So much for that adage.

Three unforced errors on our first four offensive plays. Holds, personal fouls, delay of game – what mistake DIDN’T we make? Texas made them too. But wasn’t this our house? Weren’t they supposed to be rattled? Isn’t two defensive penalties on the final Texas scoring drive a bit too much of a test for Tressel ball?

8. Officiating

From what I saw the officiating was solid (maybe a holding call here and there, but you will always have missed holding calls) and the replay made sure there were no big mistakes. I REALLY like the approach of one conference providing the officials and the other conference running the replay. Classic auditing.

9. Heisman winner.

I am a Vince Young believer. He made some mistakes and you can question his judgment, but he is a specimen. The first sack was a remarkable play. We have a man hanging on him and he is pumping his arm trying to get a throw off and won’t go down. Similar play later cost him a pick, but QBs aren’t supposed to have THAT kind of strength. His passing was also impressive, but I will argue that much of his running can be attributed to great blocking as well as his own ability.

I don’t think anyone felt Texas could beat us without establishing some sort of running game independent of Young. Seventeen carries for 50 yards is not much of a running game. Young beat us – no getting around it.

10. Heisman loser.

I love Teddy, but… is he really a coaches son?

11. AJ

Trappaso and Hawk. Both game ball candidates IMO.

Four punts, all inside the 20. Hell of an outing for a first timer in a big game.

And Hawk? 12 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.
OK, give Trappaso a pat on the back and a game ball to Hawk. Oh, wait, no game ball tonight.

12. Nuuuuge?

What can I say. That was the biggest FG attempt I can recall in some time. Go up two scores – or give them the ball in good field position with plenty of time. Tough kick, and Houuuu was solid tonight - but damn.

13. QB Controversey.

I don’t even want to open the threads. The only player who made any sort of positive statement about being the starting QB for this team was Boeckman.

Before Zwick came back in the first time I had just finished asking my son how many mistakes Smith would be allowed to make. That the Texas D was dropping passes in their chests or that Smith was recovering his own fumbles was not the point. Ultimately Zwick was no better.

I posted earlier this week that my key to the game was how well the OSU QBs performed under pressure and whether they could keep from making big mistakes. I don’t think I was that far off the mark.

14. Texas Fans

From what I saw they were pretty classy. More than I hoped to see, but nothing in your face. Don’t know if they were quiet from confidence or from following Mack Brown around. Looked for them after the game, but they were staying in the stadium. Saw very few – a mistake for some I fear (see below).

15. Whores and Horns

Too much burn orange in that stadium tonight. I had expected to see plenty in the student section, but to my surprise it was almost pure scarlet. These kids who could probably use the money had hung on to their stub and their spirit. Where most of the OSU fans had prostituted themselves were between the 20 in B and C on the East side. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t that faculty and alumni?

16. Fan Noise

How loud the stadium sounds has a lot to do with where you sit. I was in C near the South stands and the noise rarely rose to levels I have heard at Michigan games. But it did get loud.

17. Block O

Only twice do I recall a decent O-H-I-O chant and each time it was started in a different section. No waves, very little organized cheering at all. Which left me listening to the Texas band and fans during far too many time outs. And half the time when I was looking for the band to strike up a tune and drown them out they were throwing bananas in the air – very disappointing.

If OSU is going to schedule these big games before school starts I would like to see some sort of ‘alumni Block O’ of something along those lines to help address that problem. If we are going to have a real game let’s have a real game atmosphere.

18. Big Ten meltdown.

Our chances of getting back in the hunt may have been hurt as much by Michigan and Iowa as Texas. We were close enough to winning to make a run at #2 if enough others fall. But we no longer have the #3 and #8 teams in the country on our schedule.

For those keeping track, every team in the Big Ten is undefeated right now except Ohio State, Michigan, and Iowa.

19. Team Character.

They say you learn more about yourself when you win than when you lose. This was a great performance tonight. The bookies had it right – it was pretty much a ‘pick em’. I feel very good about our chances of winning the Big Ten, running off 10 straight, and having a hell of a season and a BCS bowl.

20. Fan Character

After the game I only saw one or two Texas fans and I told them nice game – and meant it. On the way out I can’t count the number of drunk students who were screaming ‘F___ Texas’. Can one of the young pups on this board explain that to me? Is your identify so tied to the performance of this team that you can’t accept a loss without denigrating the folks who earned the win?

Earlier this week I also warned Texas fans about parking East of High St – where I always park and did again tonight. Most of these kids were in that area. On the way into the game there were several Texas fans heading from that direction. On the way out they were still in the stadium celebrating while these kids were getting drunker and angrier. I hope it wasn’t as bad as I fear it might have become. (There was zero police presence in these areas.)

To be clear, we are talking about your typical ‘vocal’ minority. But I just don’t get it.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda....

Well, first off, congrats to the 'Horns - they out-played and out-coached the Buckeyes, and desrved to win.

Second, the weaknesses of the Buckeyes going into the season were at DL, RB, K/P, and leadership and consistency from the quarterback position. All of the weaknesses except K/P were exposed tonight (I can't really blame Huston for missing a 50 yarder), especially at QB. I think that we can finally un-anoint Troy Smith as the savior of this team, and we must realize once again JZ proved that he isn't a team leader and that he is prone to making critical mistakes. Suffice it to say that neither QB was impressive, and that neither QB showed that he deserves to be the starter from here on out. It looks like we'll see a platoon for a while.

The running game was sporadic, and Pittman again played a workmanlike game. However, Antonio is simply not a feature back, and he lacks the speed, vision, and elusivity to be a game-breaking threat. If the passing game cannot open up the field, the running game will suffer like it did tonight.

Outside of the long pass to Holmes, the offense looked anemic; the dropped passes were a major contributing factor to the loss (beginning with Gonzalez's on the third play of the game, a failed third-down conversion near mid-field, and ending with Hamby's once, twice, three times and you're out drop in the endzone that might have iced a victory). The play calling put no pressure on the UT defense, especially as the Bucks neared the goal line. Gotta give some blame (or maybe a lot of blame) to the staff for that. Pittman had a few good runs, then looked like Lydell Ross at times, burrowing into the pile for no gain when a running lane was open off tackle. The offensive line did a comendable job against a very good Texas DL, but the skilled guys couldn't take advantage of it.

Again, the defensive line got no pressure on the opposing QB, and when that opposing QB is Vince Young, you're going to lose. If the Buckeye LB's weren't so damned good, then the game would not have been close - Hawk played a Hell of a game, and Carp is one of the hardest hitters I've seen in a while, and Schlegel just makes plays; also congrats to Nate Salley on his third career interception. The DB's had a tough job, keeping one eye in the backfield all night to make sure VY didn't take off running, all while chasing the UT receivers all over the field as the Buckeye DL bounced off the Texas line. Just look at how many long outs VY completed (especially on the game-winning TD drive - 3rd and 12 for a first down, then the TD, plus at least one other in between) - that's a sure sign that he wasn't getting sufficient pressure from the DL.

For those of you who earlier stated that this defense is as good as the 2002 defense, I've got one thing to say - it ain't, and it ain't even close. The 2002 DL of Smith, Scott, Peterson, and Anderson, with Fraser and Thompson in the rotatation, was far superior to the present squad. The current DL doesn't have a single impact player, and if no one emerges soon, then we should expect more of the same (that is, 400 yards of total offense from the opposition).

The special teams were fine - no complaints there. Would the game have been different if Huston had made that 50 yard FG? Yes, of course, but I personally don't think that it is good policy to rely on 50 yard FG's to win games. A little more D and a lot more O, and Huston's miss is a moot point.

I have to think that OSU had every opportunity to win that game, but all the credit goes to Texas. Woulda, coulda, shoulda - excuses don't count.

Great post as always LJB.

My original post was therapy in hopes I could get to sleep after getting some thoughts out. I did - a little after 3:00. A couple of addendums if I may.

1. Our game plan was to make Young beat us with his arm. We did. He did.

2. Home field counts for 7. In the Shoe maybe 10 or more. Gotta factor that into any 'what if' scenarios.

3. It all starts in the trenches. I was concerned because on paper Texas had the better line on both sides of the ball. To win we had to prove the paper was wrong. We did not.

I actually thought our OL did a credible job in slowing their DL. They wreaked havoc, but not what I anticipated. The Texas OL was as good as I have seen - especially in picking up blitzes. They were the difference in that game.

4. If my son can call half our plays as we walk to the LOS we can't be making it that hard on the D. We got that rap from some of our opponents a few years ago - not being hard to figure out. Not sure the problem is solved.

5. I can't talk. Barely a whisper. Nobody - NOBODY - around me was sitting on their hands. I was proud of that.

6. I am curious to see what was going on with our secondary all night. Even if the OL is protecting I have never seen so many long plays against an OSU D. Heacock owns that. LJB is correct. We have some great LBs, not a great D.

7. I still say we run the table. If you have the character to move on from here you are prepared for anybody you face. If you want a film of your deepest, darkest secrets - you now have it. But if we are going to be our best we need to pick a QB and ride him. And he needs to step up and make that happen.

Yeah, me too - and up at 7:00. It's hard to unwind after a game like that.

The "What time did you go to bed and get up?" should be a thread. I watched the game from my house and still could not settle down enough to sleep until about 2:30 this morning. My younger son decided 6:15 was a good time to crawl into bed, but fortunately he let me sleep until 8:15.

Great posts, guys and hitting every nail on the head.

I knew we had lost the game when...... Hamby drops the TD pass. I told Nightmare that that is exactly the kind of play that comes back to haunt you. (same with the Hoobler late hit at the end of the 1st half that cost us 3 points)

It also seemed to me that we could run on this team if we had really wanted to, but way too many QB runs and not enough TB runs (NO big TB - Schnittker - runs)

And besides Whitner making a couple of plays, where were the DBs all night? There were guys wide-open all night. VY didn't have to make many tough or extra-accurate throws at all - just lob it out there because your guy has 5 yards of room. Sure, Salley made an INT, on a ball deflected by Carp, but he was invisible all night.

In the end, I was very proud of how hard our guys played. we just made too many mistakes and the offensive coaches did not go for the kill in the 2nd half when we had the momentum. (Note to JT: 3+3 < 7)

The frustrating thing is not the loss to a VERY good Texas team, but that I think we beat ourselves in a game that our defense so thoroughly dominated in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters, that the outcome should not have been in doubt by then.

Just got in an argument with my buddy about kick off returns and need some help.

When Texas had their big kick off return we had a great shot to nail him in the end zone. Another one of those potential game changing plays.

I was on that end of the field almost looking down the goal line. When he caught the ball his foot appeared to be across the goal line, but I don't believe the ball was. If we had subsequently tackled him in the end zone, after he had tried to advance the ball but assuming the ball had never left the end zone, is that a safety or a touch back? I believe it is a touch back.

(In either case why couldn't we have made the damn tackle!!!!????!!!!)

On TV his toe clearly appeared to be about 2 inches over the line. So, if he then ran back into endzone and was tackled, it would have to be a safety, would it not? But, not sure about where the ball is.
Go Bucks!

I am very disappointed in a lot of the fans that sat in or around 11C. A lot of us cheered hard, and gave this game everything we had, but when the chips were down all you could do was curse Tressel's name and yell like you had all the answers. On top of that, when three middle-aged Texas fans came up specifically to start trouble, you started throwing bottles at them. When we yelled at you to stop throwing things, you literally stood up and smashed it against their heads from two feet away.

What are we, Wisconsin? Grow up, student fans.

Ok where to start.

1. First lets give credit where credit is due. Texas has one helluva team. They made mistakes, but were able to overcome them. I think if Texas can get by OU this year, they are in pasedena.

2. Might as well look at the qbs. Neither played very well, both made stupid decisions, and both made some nice plays. But I hate the gosh darn 2 qb system. It DOES NOT WORK!!! There is one reason and one reason only I would like to see Smith start the rest of the games. For some reason the team plays with a different kind of emotion when he is in there. Offensively and defensively. Smith came in we were down 10-0 and then we scored 19 straight points with him in there. Why take him out. Also his deep ball is 20x's better.

3. Ginn - where were ya. Tress has to get him more touches and he has to catch the ball when he has the chance. I would like to see him on some fly patterns where he can just out run the defender. That one kickoff return I thought he should of went all the way.

4. Gameballs - Hawk, Carp, Holmes, Trappasso. They all showed up and had outstanding games.

5. I would like to see them pound Pitt a little more, but Not always the same play. Run that option with him and smith a little more and run a frickin' screen play for cryin' out loud.

6. Refs - They were overall pretty good with the replay system and the whole bit. I just didnt like the holding call on the return, He barely had a hold of his jersey. You could call that on every play. Also the late hit b4 half was some bull b/c the Texas guy came across and pushed Hoobler in the back and then he pushed back. Then later in the game they called a penalty like that on both sides. Weak call right b4 the half. Also why was there no punt interference on the punt that ginn got ran into. I know his own guys hit him but the Texas guy forced him into him and there was another guy within a yard of him on the other side.

7. Loved the defensive adjustment. They stopped Vince from running after the first 2 series.

8. Tressel did not manage the game very well. I wont get into the qb's no more. There was the drive right b4 the half when we had the ball inside the five.

-first play - everyone in the stadium knew the draw was coming when they spread out five wides.
-second play - I believe it was an incomplete pass, why not run something that will run the clock, then throw on third.
-third play - bad read by Smith and left 35 sec. on the clock. Too much time.

Then after Texas scored they kicked off and there was offsides, why not make them rekick. Give the speedster a chance to take one to the house.

Then the end of the game. When they were in fg range. Why not run the ball and center it to go ahead by 2 scores. Instead the pass that was tipped and Pitt caught for a five yard lose. Those yards would of made a much easier fg.

9. Way too many tipped balls by their d-line. On a short route o-line needs to attack and get their hands down.

10. Dropped balls. I don't know if it was jitters or what, but man we have to catch the ball.

11. D-line - I know you guys are being very critical of the d-line, but we can't expect them to get pressure on every play against the best o-line in the country. I thought they played fairly well and the pressure overall on the qb was pretty good. I seen a couple times when it looked like Kudla was being held but no calls. They did do a hell of a job of stopping the run tho. There was nothing to be had up the middle.

12. lbs - duh we knew they would sho up and they showed up in a big way.

13. secondary - a decent game. I didnt like all the man coverage tho, b/c with a scrambling qb it gives them a chance to get open easier causing big plays. Salley needs to wrap. I also thought Jenkins played a nice game. Even tho he did get wasted on the one kickoff. The one right b4 half.

14. I found the end of the game after Texas scored to be very weird. It seemed like the bucks had no composure. First Holmes almost fumbled. We sit and wait and Then Zwick fumbles. What the hell hold on to the ball. Then Texas gets the ball and just runs right up the middle for 11 yds. There is still a chance don't give up. That was probably the longest run by a rb all nite.

Then the really weird part. They run a play and the play was over at 1:42 and the timeout isnt called till 1:36. That is 6 sec. Why is Tress not telling these guys call a to. Next play play over at 1:32 and to not called till 1:23. 9 sec. Then the last play really pissed me off when the play was over at 1:12 and it took the officials 18 seconds to spot the ball. Then the d made a great play on The goal line. That is about 25 sec. that were wasted. I know it is a moot point b/c Smith was then tackled in the end zone, but the play calling migh of been different with an extra 25 sec. Where is your head Tress.

I know I shouldnt second guess but why not let Texas score after the got the first down and have a minute and half with two to's to go down and score and go for two and go to ot. I know I had that happend to our team in a high school game when we were trying to run out the clock.

From what I saw they were pretty classy. More than I hoped to see, but nothing in your face. Don’t know if they were quiet from confidence or from following Mack Brown around. Looked for them after the game, but they were staying in the stadium. Saw very few – a mistake for some I fear (see below).

We had a great time with some Texas fans. Two carloads parked behind my son's house. We lathered them up and fed them before the game, and we lathered them up big time after the game. Great group of people. Thank God I don't have to deal with an alcohol bill like that every week.
